He wrote more than 500 works, many of them string trios, quartets, and quintets. Boccherini's compositions won recognition during his lifetime but were largely ignored throughout the 1800's and early 1900's. In the mid-1900's, they began to attract increasing interest because of their graceful, expressive melodies. Boccherini's most frequently performed works are his Concerto in B flat for cello (about 1770) and the minuet from his String Quintet No. 5 (1771).

The reputation of Boccherini rivalled that of Haydn, if the nick-name "the wife of Haydn" may be accepted as evidence of contemporary fame. He was a virtuoso cellist and worked first in his native Lucca and then in Vienna, before moving to Paris and thence to Spain, where he seems to have remained from 1768 until his death. There he was in the service of the Infante Don Luis and various other patrons, and was appointed court composer to King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, himself a cellist, although there is no evidence of his actual presence at Potsdam. He died in apparent poverty in 1805. Chamber Music Boccherini is popularly known as the composer of the famous Minuet, taken from one of his quintets, written for a string quartet with an additional cello. The set of Quintets for string quartet and guitar includes a thoroughly Spanish Fandango. Cello Concertos

LUIGI BOCCHERINI (1743 - 1805)
L uigi was born on February 19th 1743 in the Italian town of Lucca. He was the third son of Leopoldo Boccherini, a skilled musicians with whom Luigi had his first lessons. He also had lessons with Lucca's 'maestro di capella', Francesco Vanucci, before he at the age of fourteen was sent to Rome to study with the 'maestro di capella' of St.Peters, Giovanni Battista Constanzi.
L ate 1757, the highly musical Boccherinifamily moved to Vienna, where Luigi and his father joined the orchestra of the Court Theatre.
I n 1764, Boccherini was appointed first cellist in Count Palatine's orchestra in Lucca. Here he teamed up with three other musicians and toured Northern Italy and France. In 1767 he ended up in Paris, where he spent a couple of years before moving to Madrid in 1769.
L ate 1770, Boccherini became 'virtuoso de camera e compositor de musica' to the Spanish Infante, Don Luis. A very attractive arrangement lasting until 1785. He married in 1771, and enjoyed a happy, secure and productive period. But in 1785 both Don Luis and his wife died.
I n 1786 he was appointed Chamber Composer to Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Preussia And in 1787 he married his second wife. He probably spent this last period of his life in Madrid, partly living on a generous pension from the royal family, or at least for a while. He was under patronage of the wealthy Madrid-family, Benavente-Osuna. When they left for Paris in 1799, the French Ambassador Lucien Bonaparte took over as Patron.

Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini (1743 – 1805) was a classical era composer and cellist from Italy, whose music retained a courtly and galante style while he matured somewhat apart from the major European musical centers. Boccherini is mostly known for one particular minuet from his String Quintet in E, Op. 11, No. 5, and the Cello Concerto in B flat major (G 482). This last work was long known in the heavily altered version by German cellist and prolific arranger Friedrich Gr¼tzmacher, but has recently been restored to its original version. Letter from Boccherini to Pleyel, 18th March 1799 There is nothing worse than wanting to tie the hands of an author, that is to say, set limits on his inspiration, his fantasy. When I was studying at the Schola Cantorum in Basel in the early 1980s, homesick and ill prepared for the cold Swiss winters, I used to feel a healthy envy of my fellow students of other nationalities who would quite naturally make the case for their respective musical origins in the auditions and periodic concerts in which we were required to demonstrate the progress we had made. Classical Music junkies know who he is but, to people who think that Back and Mozart are the first and last name of one guy, Luigi Boccherini is a name with no memory trigger. From Wiki Luigi Rodolfo Boccherini (February 19, 1743 – May 28, 1805) was a classical era composer and cellist from Italy, whose music retained a courtly and galante style while he matured somewhat apart from the major European musical centers. Boccherini is mostly known for one particular minuet from his String Quintet in E, Op. 13, No. 5, and the Cello Concerto in B flat major (G 482). I have three sets here for you. The first is a compilation that was partially used in Master and Commander (the middle bit) at the very end of the movie. I love every measure of this piece and I often set it on repeat on my MP3 player when I take the bus to work.
