Boccherini was born in Lucca Italy , in a musical family. At a young age his father, a cellist and double bass player, sent Luigi to study in Rome . In he went to Vienna with his son where the two of them were employed by the court as musicians in the Burgtheater . In Boccherini went to Madrid , where he was employed by Don Luis, the younger brother of King Charles III . There he flourished under royal patronage, until one day when the King expressed his disapproval at a passage in a new trio, and ordered Boccherini to change it. The composer, no doubt irritated with this intrusion into his art, doubled the passage instead, leading to his immediate dismissal. Then he accompanied Don Luis to Arenas de San Pedro a little town at the Gredos mountains, there and in the closest town of Candeleda Boccherini wrote many of his most brilliant works.

Luigi Boccherini was born on February 19, 1743. The son of a professional musician and double bassist, Luigi began his musical studies with his father at the tender age of five. Cello was his chosen instrument and this instrument would feature prominently in his future compositions. When he was nine, Luigi studied with Abbé Vanucci, music director of the cathedral at San Martino. After his first solo appearance, it was determined that such a talent needed more than his hometown could give. He was sent to Rome to study with G. B. Costanzi, music director of St. Peter's Basilica. One year later, both father and son were hired by the Imperial Theater Orchestra in Vienna. Boccherini began composing early and his first compositions were published when he was just 17 years old. In 1765, Boccherini wrote his first string quartet, a genre for which he would become famous. It was about this time that Boccherini began to suffer from ill health, which would plague him the rest of his life. His father died in 1767 and Boccherini then formed a partnership with the famous violinist Filippo Manfredi. The duo went on tour through Italy and France, finally ending up in Paris where Boccherini wrote and published a number of works including a set of six string quartets.

Brief biography of Classical period composer and cellist Luigi Boccherini, his life and works that influenced later prominent composers like Gluck, Haydn and Mozart.
In spite dominance of Mozart, Haydn, and others in Vienna, Italy also produced its own talented composers. Classical composer Boccherini (1743-1805) was one of them, his musical style and methods likened to Franz Joseph Haydn . Boccherini was one of the most important Italian representatives of the Viennese Classical style. Luigi Boccherini, Italian composer and cellist, came from a family of talented musicians and artists. He was born in Lucca on February 19, 1743, son of a cellist and bass-player. In his teens he was famous as a virtuoso cellist, having debuted at age 13. His father sent him to study in Rome with Maestro di Cappella, who later accompanied him to the Royal court in Vienna where he worked for a while. The 18th Century Classical period was an era of technical virtuosity. What Baroque composer Corelli and other advocates have done for the violin, Boccherini did for the cello, with series of cello concerti.

Executive summary: Cello Concerto in B-flat Italian composer, son of an Italian bass-player, was born at Lucca, and studied at Rome, where he became a fine cellist, and soon began to compose. He returned to Lucca, where for some years he was prominent as a player, and there he produced two oratorios and an opera. He toured in Europe, and in 1768 was received in Paris by Gossec and his circle with great enthusiasm, his instrumental pieces being highly applauded; and from 1769 to 1785 he held the post of "composer and virtuoso" to the King of Spain's brother, the infante Luis, at Madrid. He afterwards became "chamber-composer" to King Frederick William II. of Prussia, until 1797, when he returned to Spain. He died at Madrid on the 28th of May 1805. As an admirer of Joseph Haydn Giuseppe Tartini , perhaps the greatest writer of music for stringed instruments in the late Italian amplifications of the older quasi-polyphonic sonata or suite-form that survived into the beginning of the 19th century in the works of Nardini. Boccherini may safely be regarded as its last real master. He was wittily characterized by the contemporary violinist Puppo as "the wife of Haydn"; which is very true, if man and woman are two different species; but not as true as e.g. the equally common saying that "

BOCCHERINI, LUIGI BIOGRAPHY
The reputation of Boccherini rivalled that of Haydn, if the nick- name "the wife of Haydn" may be accepted as evidence of contemporary fame. He was a virtuoso cellist and worked first in his native Lucca and then in Vienna, before moving to Paris and thence to Spain, where he seems to have remained from 1768 until his death. There he was in the service of the Infante Don Luis and various other patrons, and was appointed court composer to King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, himself a cellist, although there is no evidence of his actual presence at Potsdam. He died in apparent poverty in 1805. Chamber Music Boccherini is popularly known as the composer of the famous Minuet, taken from one of his quintets, written for a string quartet with an additional cello. The set of Quintets for string quartet and guitar includes a thoroughly Spanish Fandango. Cello Concertos

He returned to Lucca as a professional musician of the highest order, and he joined the town theatre orchestra as violoncellist. At the same time, he introduced himself to his fellow citizens as a composer by giving a special concert - with the cooperation of Filippo Manfredi, the violinist - devoted entirely to his own sonatas. The success of this concert was so great that the two decided to tour the principle cities of France. Their reception at all their destinations surpassed their wildest expectations, including Paris, which they reached in 1768. The fame of the two had become so large that the Ambassador of España in Paris invited them to come to Madrid.

Introduction
Luigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, Italy, on February 19th, 1743 . He was taught music at a young age by his father, who was a professional bass player. Boccherini proved to be an extremely skilled pupil, and in 1757 he was sent to Rome to perfect his technique under expert instruction. In Rome he studied under Maestro di Cappella at St. Peters. He later visited Vienna with this man three times before he had turned twenty-one. He returned to Lucca at that age and formed a string quartet with his friend Filippo Manfredi. He composed several sonatas for the two to play, and they were called all over France to tour.
Historical Context
They arrived in Paris in 1767, here he was allowed to publicize his trios quartets and other pieces to a sizable audience. He then proceeded to compose ten cello concertos to recreate the instrument in the new age of music. He stretched what was previously thought as the limitations of playing the cello, but upon settling in Madrid from an invitation of the ambassador, he began to concentrate of composing pieces for the string quartet and quintet He then went to write for Prince Wilhelm of Prussia for a short time. Upon his return to Spain in 1800, he began to compose several commissioned pieces for Lucien Buonparte, Napoleon's brother. His fame was cemented through Europe, and even his publisher back in Paris released music of other's under his name. Nonetheless, Boccherini died a poor man in Madrid in 1805.

LUIGI BOCCHERINI Dr David C F Wright Boccherini is probably only known for that famous minuet from a String Quintet in E. But it is not an outstanding piece. There are minuets just as good as this one! But he was a prolific and very gifted composer. In my view he was the first composer to inject a grace into music and write polished music and move away from virtuosity and showmanship in favour of music as music having its own intrinsic value. Boccherini's music suffered at the hands of unscrupulous publishers during his lifetime and even more so after he died. Luigi Boccherini was born on 19th February 1743 in Lucca which was then the centre of a tiny independent Italian republic. He was the third of five children fathered by Leopoldo Boccherini a very good double-bass player. Luigi's musical ability was clear from an early age. He took lessons from his father and the Abbate Vannucci, choirmaster to the Archbishop. Luigi's sister, Maria Ester, became an accomplished dancer and his elder brother Giovanni Gastone was to become a poet and librettist. He was the author of the text for Haydn's Il Ritorno di Tobia.
