Bloch, Ernest

Swiss-born US composer. His music is highly coloured in its orchestration and rhythms, often drawing on elements of Jewish folk music. Among his works are the lyrical drama Macbeth Schelomo for cello and orchestra (1916), five string quartets, and for viola and orchestra (1953). He often used themes based on Jewish liturgical music and folk song. Macbeth , begun there in 1918, was unfinished. From 1920 to 1925 Bloch was founder-director of the Cleveland Institute of Music, and in 1925 he was appointed head of the San Francisco Conservatory. In 1930 he retired to Switzerland to live quietly in remote places. Some interest was shown in his work in England and a good deal in Italy, where his Sacred Service was produced in Turin and Macbeth was revived in an Italian translation in Naples in 1938. But the anti-Semitic movement encouraged by the fascists put an end to this appreciation. As a US citizen he could no longer remain absent from the USA without losing his adopted nationality, and he returned there to live in retirement at the end of 1938.

MUSIC COMPOSERS THE ROBERT STRASSBURG COLLECTION OF ERNEST BLOCH Two great men of modern classical music are honored and commemorated by this important acquisition to the Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts. THE ROBERT STRASSBURG COLLECTION OF ERNEST BLOCH is a fascinating and fact-filled compilation of manuscript material gathered by the noted educator, composer, conductor and musicologist, Dr. Robert Strassburg (1915-2003), focusing on the career and life of one of the most renowned composers of the 20th Century, Ernest Bloch (1880-1959). We are grateful to Dr. Marc Strassburg for his generosity and we thank Professor Kushner for his tireless negotiations during this transaction with the Strassburg family. Their efforts on behalf of the University of Florida resulted in a treasure trove of material for the Belknap Collection and the Department of Special and Area Studies Collections. The preservation of the work of Dr. Robert Strassburg provides invaluable material for future scholars and researchers at the University of Florida and we are proud to add this resource to the collections. Dr. Robert Strassburg wrote: "The music of Ernest Bloch has an enduring quality about it. As it is rediscovered from year to year one discovers an increase in its power to stir the listener emotionally. It demands much of the listener, but is readily accessible..." The musical careers of Ernest Bloch and Robert Strassburg endure and are accessible for discovery in THE ROBERT STRASSBURG COLLECTION OF ERNEST BLOCH in the BELKNAP COLLECTION FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS.

Biographical Sketch
Provenance
Bloch bequeathed his papers to his daughter Suzanne Bloch upon his death in 1959. In the summer of 1982, thanks to the efforts of Alfred Mann and Robert Freeman, Ms. Bloch elected to deposit the pedagogical papers, which she selected and organized herself, at Sibley Music Library. Dr. Mann received the material from Ms. Bloch in New York City on May 7, 1983 and personally deposited it at Sibley Library ten days later. Ms. Bloch made a formal gift of the material to Sibley Library in the fall of 1985.
Scope and Content
The Bloch Collection contains pedagogical material gathered by Bloch in his career as a teacher, and papers pertaining to his own lifelong technical and analytic studies; he hand-copied many of the materials in the latter category for posterity and use. Among his studies are a series of notebooks containing a record of Bloch's extensive studies of counterpoint, harmony, fugue, form, and what he termed "configuration." He also made extensive and detailed analyses of pieces by Bach, Beethoven, and others. The series of Bloch's teaching materials include lecture notes, tests, and student papers from his work at the Cleveland Institute and the University of California at Berkely, including manuscripts of student's (Roger Sessions, Henry Elwell, and Randall Thompson among them) studies in fugue, in the students' own hands. Some of Bloch's correspondence with Elwell, and Elwell's memoirs of Bloch, may also be found in the collection.

The 1999 Ernest Bloch Lectures
Lecture 2. An Instinct for Music:
Is Music an Evolutionary Adaptation?
David Huron
Addressing the question of music's origins has a long though not particularly distinguished history. Many cultures have provided colorful stories describing how humans acquired the capacity for music. A few bold or wreckless scholars have ventured to offer biological, psychological, social, cultural or religious accounts of possible origins. Most scholars have wisely steered clear of the issue of music's origins, since clearly the enterprise is patently speculative. At its worst, proposals concerning musical origins are fiction masquerading as scholarship. However, I think there remains some merit in contemplating the question of how music-making got started. Reflecting on such questions can be a potentially informative and perhaps even illuminating exercise. In this lecture, I propose to offer a social account of music's origins that is explicitly linked to one of the most successful theories yet devised: the theory of evolution by natural selection. Richard Dawkins (1995) reminds us of the importance of natural selection in the following passage: "All organisms that have ever lived every animal and plant, all bacteria and all fungi, every creeping thing ... can look back at their ancestors and make the following proud claim: Not a single one of our ancestors died in infancy. They all reached adulthood, and every single one [successfully reproduced.] Not a single one of our ancestors was felled by an enemy, or by a virus, or by a misjudged footstep on a cliff edge, before bringing at least one child into the world. Thousands of our ancestors' contemporaries failed in all these respects, but not a single solitary one of our ancestors failed in any of them. These statements are blindingly obvious, yet from them much follows: much that is curious and unexpected, much that explains and much that astonishes." (1995; p.2)

I think my favorite Bloch works now are the Evocastions for orchestra and the late Sinfonia Breve. Formerly it is astonishin how long it took for Evocatrions to relatively be recorded and that there has only been one recording ever of the Sinfonia Breve. Moreover both are more interesting than Schelomo or Voice in the Wilderness or the Isreal Symphony. Any opinions on Bloch? Popular posts by TheGypzie Stravinsky`s Orpheus Gem of the Ocean?

Introduction
The Library of Congress began receiving Ernest Bloch materials in 1925 with his deposit of several music manuscripts (including his Three Jewish Poems and sketches and notes on the opera Macbeth), correspondence, and scrapbooks. In the more-than-seventy-year relationship between Bloch and this institution, there have been numerous additional deposits of his materials added to that original receipt. Although the association between the Library and Bloch was advanced by Bloch himself, the Bloch children (Suzanne Bloch Smith, Ivan Bloch, and Lucienne Bloch Dimitroff) have maintained that alliance since before his death. The donation of Bloch materials by Suzanne Bloch in 1989 established the Library as the largest repository of Ernest Bloch music manuscripts, manuscript lectures and lecture notes, correspondence, and personal effects in the United States. Portland, Oregon and Geneva, Switzerland also have collections of Bloch materials.

Lecture Series, The Castrato in Nature
Between ca. 1560 and at least 1913, Italian boys were castrated in considerable numbers and groomed as proficient high-voiced singers for chapels, salons, and theaters. The phenomenon of singing eunuchs is not unique to Europe, but the magnitude of the practice and their increasing status as independent professionals, detached from the court, is unparalleled. Proceeding from their paradoxical bonding and unbonding from the old regime, these lectures explore the castrato's various natures' (vocal and physiological, luxurious and abject, sacrificial and entrepreneurial) within a set of changing social and political economies that initially ensured the phenomenon an amazing longevity but eventually spelled its demise.

Ernest Bloch
The creator of music of great spiritual expression, Ernest Bloch was born on 24 July 1880 in Geneva, Switzerland. He was one of the most original composers of the 20th Century whose music, while intellectually challenging, was accessible to a wide audience. His works were regularly performed from the 1920s to the 1950s, particularly in the USA, UK and Italy. The following list will be added to from time to time and there is hope that this will form a complete catalogue of this composer’s works commonly available.
