Bizet was born in Paris at 28 Rue de la Tour d'Auvergne. He was registered with the legal name Alexandre-C©sar-L©opold Bizet , but was baptized Georges Bizet and was always known by the latter name. He entered the Paris Conservatory of Music in 1848, a fortnight before his tenth birthday. His first symphony, the Symphony in C Major , was written in 1855, when he was still only sixteen, evidently as a student assignment. It seems that Bizet completely forgot about it himself, and it was not discovered again until 1935, in the archives of the Conservatory library. Upon its first performance (26 February 1935), it was immediately hailed as a junior masterwork and a welcome addition to the early Romantic period repertoire. A delightful work (and a prodigious one, from a seventeen-year-old boy), the symphony is noteworthy for bearing an amazing stylistic resemblance to the music of Franz Schubert , whose work was virtually unknown in Paris at that time (with the possible exception of a few of his songs).

Georges Bizet G eorges Alexandre César Léopold Bizet was born on 25 October, 1838 in Paris. His mother was a pianist, and his father taught voice and composed. It seems likely that Bizet was probably as musically precocious as Felix Mendelssohn or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I t is said that he could read and write music by the age of four, and with a very encouraging family, his parents actually hid books from him to suppress his literary bent and encourage more diligent applications to music, Bizet's future in music was pre-ordained. B izet entered the Paris Conservatoire de Musique in 1848, at the age of nine, and studied:
  • piano under Marmontel, harmony under Zimmerman, organ with Benoist and composition with Halevy and composition with Charles Gounod until the age of twenty.
H is years there were punctuated by a series of prizes for theory, piano, organ and composition. In 1855, at the age of seventeen, he composed his lovely Symphony in C. This piece was not performed until 1935 because Bizet was afraid that he would be charged with imitation, it was that strongly influenced by his teacher Charles Gounod. In fact, on careful listening, this piece recalls:
  • Ludwig Van Beethoven

Georges Bizet Georges Bizet was described as an energetic man with a sense of humor who would not be considered a promising composer if it had not been for "Carmen", the most popular opera of our times.
Georges Bizet was born in Paris on October 25, 1838. He was born into a musical family. He displayed musical talent at an early age and entered the great Paris Conservatory of Music at the age of nine. He was an outstanding student, winning many prizes. At the age of 17 he composed "Symphony in C".
In 1869 Bizet married Genevieve Halevy, and had one son. During this time he was very poor. He made ends meet as a piano teacher and composer. He refused a teaching position because he wanted to devote his time to composing.
Bizet composed "Carmen" in 1875. This violent love story was severely criticized at first because of the murder scene. These negative crtitcisms are the reasons why it is a great opera. Three months after the opera's premeire, Bizet died.
The fame of this French composer rest primarily on his opera "Carmen". His death left numerous works unfinished and the question remains of what he might have acheived if he lived longer. Home Composer Info Games The Orchestra ... Major Compositions

A second symphony, "Roman" was not completed. At the Conservatoire Bizet studied under Fromental Hal©vy, whose daughter Gen©vi¨ve he later married. On Hal©vy's death in 1864 Bizet made a completion of his last, unfinished, opera No©, but in the event this was not performed until 1885, ten years after Bizet's own death. Bizet's son by Gen©vi¨ve, Jacques Bizet, became a school-friend of Marcel Proust, who used Gen©vi¨ve (who became a noted society hostess in her second marriage) as a model for the Duchesse de Guermantes in his roman fleuve A la recherche du temps perdu.

    About This Person
From All Movie Guide: Bizet 's music has appeared in 85 feature films between the years 1913 and 2000. As may be expected, the overwhelming majority employ excerpts from or are full productions of the composer's most successful opera, Carmen (1875). This innovative work offers many of Bizet 's most exquisite melodies with rich, atmospheric orchestrations highlighting a plot, based on Prosper M©rim©e's novel, filled with drama, conventional comedy, romance, and stark realisms that were shocking at the time: Carmen's blatant sexuality, her risqu© discarding of men like so many picked flowers, the cigar factory women who smoke and fight, and Carmen's being stabbed to death by Don Jos© in full view of the audience. Nevertheless, the opera became very popular and admired by other composers. Nietzsche declared that Carmen was "the perfect antidote to Wagnerian neurosis."

Introduction (born Paris, 25 October 1838; died Bougival, 3 June 1875). Le Docteur Miracle ; later that year he set out for Italy as holder of the coveted Prix de Rome. During his three years in Rome Bizet began or projected many compositions; only four survive, including the opera buffa Don Procopio (not performed until 1906). Shortly after his return to Paris, in September 1861, his mother died; the composer consoled himself with his parents' maid, by whom he had a son in June 1862. He rejected teaching at the Conservatoire and the temptation to become a concert pianist, and completed his obligations under the terms of the Prix de Rome. The last of these, a one-act La guzla de l'emir Bizet completed it in four months. It was produced in September 1863, but met with a generally cool reception: an uneven work, with stiff characterization, it is notable for the skilful scoring of its exotic numbers. In the ensuing years Bizet earned a living arranging other composers' music and giving piano lessons. Not until December 1867 was another opera staged - La jolie fille de Perth , which shows a surer dramatic mastery than despite an inept libretto. It received a good press but had only 18 performances.

    GEORGES BIZET
Born: October 25, 1838. Paris, France
Died: June 3, 1875. Bougival, France
French opera composer. Bizet is best known for his opera Carmen

Georges Bizet's life was short and full of difficulties, a fact that seems at odds with the enduring success of his final work, Carmen . Bizet was born into a musical family, where he received a good early training that led to his entrance into the Paris Conservatory at the age of nine. Bizet did well in his studies, developing his skills as a pianist (he impressed Franz Liszt with his playing) and as a composer. At the age of seventeen he composed his Symphony in C , a meticulous and effervescent work that was never heard until 1935. His studies at the conservatory were capped in 1858 with his receipt of the Prix de Rome, which allowed Bizet three years of financial support to concentrate on composition.
Bizet's years in Rome were not very productive, and resulted in few works only four of which survive. One, his opera Don Procopio , was not produced until 1906. Upon his return to Paris he turned down a teaching position at the conservatory, wishing instead to concentrate on his writing. He found moderate success in 1863 with his opera , but his next work, La jolie fille de Perth , saw only eighteen performances.
