Home, Sweet Home
1823 (this cover, 1866)
Music by: Sir Henry Rowley Bishop
Lyrics by: John Howard Payne
Cover artist: unknown
It may be that this song ranks among a handful of songs that changed the world of popular music. Recognized almost universally, it is amazing to realize that the song has been in constant play for almost 200 years! Written for an operetta, Clari; or, The Maid of Milan , which was first performed at the Covent Garden Theater in London in 1823 it has far surpassed the memory of the opera and the composer and lyricist. In fact, though both Bishop and Payne were both noted in their times, both are almost entirely remembered only for this song. The melody was "borrowed" by Bishop from a Sicilian melody he included as a 'Sicilian Air' in a volume of (presumably not very authentic) National Airs edited by him in 1821. As was (and still is) often the case, Bishop reused the tune when composing the music for the opera Clari.

    American Sheet Music: ca. 1820-1860
Please note: This list of music popular in America during the years 1820-1860 is from Julius Mattfeld's Variety Music Cavalcade, 1620-1969 , 3d ed. (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1971). Mattfeld drew partly on his experience as a librarian, citing songs that mid-twentieth-century readers had asked for; his lists become more accurate and inclusive as they approach the twentieth century. Useful as a record of songs long remembered for the period 1820-1860, the list below cannot be taken as an inclusive guide to the most-performed music of any year. One should look also at songs that appear in many editions, at songs used as the subject of "brilliant variations," and at songs to which "answer songs" were written. (Even for the years covered by the companion collection Music for the Nation, 1870-1885 , Mattfeld misses such major hits as "See that My Grave Is Kept Green" and "Moet and Chandon.") Paul Charosh's article "Studying American Popular Song" ( American Music 15:4 [Winter 1997]) also provides other useful criteria for judging the success of a song of the period.

      Abstract:
The figure of the siren serves as a metaphor for human singing and musical femininity in a number of texts ranging from the sixth to the fourteenth centuries. Bird comparisons in general allowed medieval writers to signal a mismatch between positive musical features (attractive song, singer, and sound) and negative ethical features (the sin of sweetness as a form of gluttony or lechery), a dichotomy that seems to have been felt acutely in the later Middle Ages. References in John of Salisbury's Policraticus , bestiaries, music theory, and lyrics are brought to bear on the overlap between the figures of the siren and the fowler, both of which lure aurally. Arnulf of St-Ghislain's striking use of a siren comparison can be informed by the range of meanings for the siren in the Middle Ages and his borrowing of bird and animal comparisons from Alan of Lille's De planctu Naturae . Bird-like features of both listener and singer in medieval accounts of musical hearing add to this picture of aural danger. Tunbridge, Laura, 1974-

Where did the English Bishop family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the Bishop family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?
One relatively recent invention that did much to standardize English spelling was the printing press. However, before its invention even the most literate people recorded their names according to sound rather than spelling. The spelling variations under which the name Bishop has appeared include Bishop, Bisshop, Bisshope, Bishope, Bishoppe and many more. First found in Worcestershire, where they held a family seat from ancient times, long before the Norman Conquest in 1066. At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Bishop arrived in North America very early: Daniel Bishop who settled in Virginia in 1663; Henry Bishop settled in Maryland in 1633; Joseph Bishop in Virginia in 1644; Thomas Bishop settled in the Barbados with his wife and servants in 1680.

A Christian religious service seems incomplete without a hymn, and weddings are no exception. This page is about one such hymn. Well actually, it's not really a hymn, it's a secular song. It's a song about the value of a good home. It's a story about somebody going away from home, roaming around, and then going back home to get a soothing caress from mum and a fond smile from dad. It could be about somebody leaving home to get married, the marriage not working, and the child running back home where they know they'll be OK. Not a suitable wedding song!
