SIR HENRY ROWLEY BISHOP (1786-1855), English musical composer, was born in London on the 18th of November 1786. He received his artistic training from Francisco Bianchi, and in 1804 wrote the music to a piece called Angelina, which was performed at Margate . His next composition was the music to the ballet of Tamerlan et Bajazet, produced in 1806 at the King's theatre . This proved successful, and was followed within two years by several others, of which Caractacus a pantomimic ballet, written for Drury Lane, may be named. In 1809 his first opera The Circassian's Bride was produced at Drury Lane; but unfortunately the theatre was burned down after one performance, and the score of the work perished in the flames. His next work of importance, the opera of The Maniac, written for the Lyceum in 1810, established his reputation, and probably secured for him an appointment for three years as composer for Covent Garden Virgin of the Sun The Miller and his Men Guy Mannering and The Slave Maid Marian and Clari

    Sir Henry Rowley Bishop
This English composer of noted fame during his life-time was thought to be an operatic composer. Given the stilted style of his writing, with few through-composed works, multiple songs and duets from the trivialized opera-like venues demanded by his theatre managers, Bishop cannot be considered an operatic composer. The songs attributed to him from his stage works are quite numerous and have indeed had their lasting effect. His most famous song "Home, Sweet Home" demonstrated his ability to capture an audience with good melodic lines. Bishop's most important operatic work was "Aladdin", and that was more likened to an operetta, while his best genre outside of the context of pure English ballads was in setting Shakespeare to music. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide Expand [+] dojo.byId('bio2').innerHTML = 'This English composer of noted fame during his life-time was thought to be an operatic composer. Expert: Frances Sampey Deak Date: Subject: Henry Rowley Bishop Question There is a story in my family that we are related to Sir Henry Rowley Bishop born 1786 in London. I looked him up and found that someone else had him on their family tree along with my great great grandmother Rose Ballard. According to the information that they had, Henry Bishop married Anna Riviere born Jan 1810 London and had three children named Augustus, Rose, and Johanna. Then Rose married a man named George Ballard and had my great great grandmother also named Rose Ballard. This information is not correct though. According to a US census that I found Rose senior was born around the time that Anna Riviere was almost 50 years old in 1857, and she had already left her husband by that time. So we are missing a generation.
