And Other Early American Composers William Billings (1746-1800), is considered by many to be the foremost representative of early American music. Billings was born in Boston on October 7, 1746. Largely self-trained in music, he was a tanner by trade and a friend of such figures of the American Revolution as Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Billings's New England Psalm-Singer (1770), engraved by Revere, was the first collection of music entirely by an American. ( The image above is the frontispiece engraving for New England Psalm-Singer by Paul Revere Especially known among his compositions are his canon (round) "When Jesus Wept," the anthem "David's Lamentation," and the hymn "Chester," written to his own patriotic text and unofficially the national hymn of the American Revolution. Billings died in Boston on September 26, 1800. (Excerpts from an article on William Billings by John H. Lienhard, University of Houston

William Billings American composer
Main
born Oct. 7, 1746, Boston, Mass., U.S. died Sept. 26, 1800, Boston foremost composer of the early American primitive style, whose works have become an integral part of the American folk tradition. A tanner by trade, he was self-taught in music. Among his friends were many prominent figures of the American Revolution, including Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Anthem for Easter were among the most popular of early American hymns. Although reportedly missing both an eye and a leg, Billings was active as an itinerant singing master and was influential in furthering the singing-school tradition of American folk culture. By the mid-1780s his fame was considerable, but his final decade was one of steep decline, leaving him poor and nearly forgotten by the time of his death. His six publications include The New-England Psalm-Singer (1770; the first collection entirely by an American composer)

WILLIAM BILLINGS
by John H. Lienhard
Click here for audio of Episode 1188. Today, we meet America's first significant composer. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. A nyone who's done much choral singing has sung William Billings's music. Ask what music came out of Colonial America: we get Billings and little more. Few sophisticated musicians think much of him I love his stuff. Historians have made little effort to know Billings. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians runs to almost 20,000 pages and it gives Billings only a page and a half. Billings was born in Boston in 1747. He was poor and uneducated he supported himself much of the time as a tanner. But he also took up music when he was young and was teaching choral singing by the age of 22. Biographers call him a gargoyle. He was blind in one eye with a short leg and a withered arm. But that's only the beginning. He practiced what a contemporary called "an uncommon negligence of person," and he was hopelessly addicted to tobacco constantly inhaling handfuls of snuff. That may explain why he only lived to the age of 54. He had a stentorian, tobacco-damaged bass voice and he seemed uninterested in any easy beauty of sound.

William Billings Born 7 October 1746, Boston.
Died 26 September 1800, Boston. Bizarre of appearance (one-eyed, one-legged, and unkempt) and colorful of career (by turns as tanner, teacher, and civil servant), Billings was America's first major composer. The New-England Psalm-Singer, a collection of 120 vocal works (with frontispiece engraved by Paul Revere), was the first published edition of American music; The Singing Master's Assistant enjoyed immense circulation, in part, owing to its politically inflammatory lyrics. "Chester," Billings's famous and stirring Revolutionary hymn, might well be compared in function and effect to Martin Luther's Ein' feste Burg. Works

Billings' scientific studies on desert, arctic and alpine environmentswhat he termed "severe surroundings"made him a pioneer and leader in the field of plant physiological ecology. Among the subjects he investigated were ecological phytogeography, the effect of substrate on plant growth and success, ecological races, plant metabolic rates, and the effects of temperature and moisture stress on plants. He was especially known for his work in the American West and in Alaska, but from time to time did research in other geographical locations as well. Billings was a highly popular and influential teacher; the fifty-two doctoral students he advised over his career have gone on to have a strong effect on the field of ecology. William Billings
The following essay was another part of my recent course on American Music. and was written in response to the following question:
Billings may be better known today than he was even just a few years ago, but he still needs advocating. His music is simply wonderful
The Boston composer William Billings (1756-1800) represented one pinnacle of the uniquely American musical flowering in the latter 18 th Billings published four volumes of psalm settings, fuging tunes and anthems during his life, beginning with The New England Psalm Singer , published in 1770. This was followed by , the Psalm Singers Amusement (1781) and the Suffolk Harmony (1786). The early volumes sold well, the latter less so. By the time The Continental Harmony was published in 1792, Billings was in financial difficulties and his last work failed to restore his fortunes. He may well have been aware that The Continental Harmony And alert I would have to be, for Billings packs a lot of information into his long sentences. Nonetheless, his approach is methodical and well ordered. He begins with
