Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber Austrian composer and violinist. Little is known of his musical training. Around 1665 he began his career as a member of the Court of Prince-Bishop Karl of Olomouc (Count Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn), at his castle in Kromeriz. In 1670 Biber left the court without permission to join the chapel forces at the Salzburg court of the Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph. IHe was promoted to Vice-Kapellmeister (possibly from choirmaster) there in 1679, and live years later he was made court Kapellmeister. Emperor Leopold I, who through the years had grown to admire Biber's music and violin playing, bestowed the title of nobility on him in 1690. Biber apparently retired to the country and spent his last years composing sacred and dramatic music for Salzburg. Of his several operas and school dramas the music for only one is extant, Chi la dura la vince (1687); his sacred works include motets, vespers, Masses, and a Requiem for five. He has been suggested as the composer of the Missa salisburgensis

He received his first position in 1668 as musician in the court of Archbishop Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn at Olmutz. But Biber failed to return from a visit to Innsbruck without permission. On this visit he met the at the time famous violin maker Jakob Stainer , who mentioned him in a later document as "the outstanding virtuos Herr Biber". He was first a violinist at the castle of Kroměř­Å¾ and the Salzburg court. In he became Kapellmeister in Salzburg , where he died twenty years later. His prolific works show a predilection for canonic use and harmonic diapason that pre-date the later Baroque works of Johann Pachelbel and Johann Sebastian Bach . He was known as a violin virtuoso and is best known for his violin works, many of which employ scordatura (unconventional tunings of the open strings).

Z HEINRICH IGNAZ FRANZ VON BIBER (1644 - 1704) Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber was one of the first great instrumental composers, a thoroughly idiosyncratic musical thinker, and by many accounts the finest violinist of the seventeenth century. He was born on a large estate, where his father was the huntsman or forester. There is no record of his early development as a musician. What is known is that by the mid-1660s he was in the orchestra of Prince-Bishop Karl Lichtenstein-Kastelkorn of Olmütz, one of the leading music-lovers of the time and the owner of one of the great collections of early Baroque music manuscripts. Biber's fame was growing to the extent that he felt he could do better elsewhere, and left the Bishop's employment in 1670. However, he had not obtained permission to do so and, according to the rules of that time, the Prince-Bishop issued a warrant for his arrest. Biber hid out with an instrument maker in the South Tyrol, Jakob Stainer, who was spreading the word that Biber was a "formidable virtuoso." Biber obtained a job with the court of Maximilian Gandolf, Reichsgraf von Khünberg, Prince Bishop of Salzburg, in the winter of 1670. In May 1672 he married. In Salzburg he obtained a series of promotions: trainer of the cathedral choir boys (1677); vice-Kapellmeister (1679); dean of the choir boys' school and Court Kapellmeister (1684).
