Hector Berlioz: The French storyteller 1803-1869
``Plots, true or false, are necessary things,'' wrote poet John Dryden around 1680. Dryden was discussing a different kind of plot, but this line could be taken out of context to be the credo of people who can't get anything out of classical music without attaching some story to it. Movies and novels have plots; why not music? Since long before Dryden's time, composers have occasionally given their music plots or programs. But the first composer to make a career of program music was Hector Berlioz. The most famous French composer of the first half of the 19th century, Berlioz wrote no solo piano music and no chamber music. These had traditionally been regarded as vehicles for ``pure'' musical expression. Instead, he produced a good deal of music for voice, including several operas, and many orchestral works often requiring extra (and sometimes exotic) wind and brass instruments. This is the sort of music that lends itself best to storytelling. Berlioz was strongly influenced by men of literature, especially Shakespeare and Goethe, followed by Byron, Scott and other figures in the Romantic movement. He allowed his literary preoccupations to influence his music's style, instrumentation and layout. Note the word ``influence.'' Berlioz did not design overtures and symphonies to mirror the action in Shakespeare's plays or Byron's poems; the music merely conveyed the main emotions found in those literary works.

Louis Hector Berlioz ( 1803 - 1869 )
French composer, conductor and music author. Born in La Cote-St. Andre, near Grenoble.
Hector received just basic music training as a child. He had no outstanding teachers or influences as other great music icons to direct and guide him.
It was his ambition to express himself through the music medium and eventually taught himself enough to compose songs by the age of twelve.
As his father was a Doctor and it being the custom to follow in his fathers footsteps he studied medicine in Paris.
But when he was nineteen he turned his back on his father and the practice of becoming a doctor, and pursued his first love, Music.
He was able to convince Jean-Francois Lesueur to accept him as a pupil and eventually gained entrance into the Paris Conservatory.
Hector struggled in his development as a composer during these years, it was only his intense determination and drive that carried him through the process of becoming good at his craft.
When he was 37 he finally received a post on the Journal des debats which helped improve his financial situation.

Richard Rodda's notes - CD inlay
Berlioz spent the last two weeks of July 1830 shut up in the Paris Conservatoire writing, under strict supervision, a cantata ( Sardanapale ) with which he hoped to snare the Prix de Rome . (It was his fifth and, he vowed, final attempt; he won.) "I was finishing my cantata when the Revolution broke out," he recorded in his Memoirs . "I dashed off the final pages of my orchestral score to the sound of stray bullets coming over the roofs and pattering on the wall outside my window. On the 29th I had finished, and was free to go out and roam about Paris till morning, pistol in hand. A day or two later I was crossing the courtyard of the

Hector Berlioz
French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz was an habitual opium user. He is most famous for his orchestral work Symphonie fantastique Symphonie fantastique is an "opera without words". It was first performed in 1830. Each movement is designed to evoke the different stages of the opium experience. A sublimation of his own unrequited love for actress Harriet Smithson, Berlioz's masterpiece is about a tormented lovesick artist who takes an overdose of opium. Instead of killing him, the opium induces astonishing dream imagery.

Fantastique Friday 2: Hector Berlioz
The greatest autobiography written by a musician has to be "The Memoirs of Hector Berlioz," which were first given a good English translation in 1969 by David Cairns, who went on to write a recently published, massive two-volume biography of the composer's life.
The autobiography's first paragraph is as follows:
"I was born on 11th December 1803 in La Cote Saint-Andre, a very small French town. During the months which preceded my birth my mother never dreamt, as Virgil's did, that she was about to bring forth a laurel branch, Nor, I must addhowever painful the admission to my vanitydid she imagine she bore within her a brand of fire, like Olympias the mother of Alexander. This is extraordinary, I agree, but it is true. I came into the world quite normally, unheralded by any of the portents in use in poetic times to announce the arrival of those destined for glory. Can it be that our age is lacking in poetry?"
The 600-page tome just gets better, and funnier, from there.

Berlioz was born in France at La Côte St. André , between Lyon and Grenoble . His father was a physician and young Hector was sent to Paris to study medicine as well. Berlioz was horrified by the process of dissection and, to the surprise of his parents, he abandoned his career path in medicine to study music. He then attended the Paris Conservatoire studying opera and composition. (Kamien 241)

http://www.classicalnotes.net/classics/berliozsym.html
It's tough to admit in these politically-correct times of ours, but one of the most influential, enduring and celebrated of all classical masterworks, the Symphonie Fantastique of Hector Berlioz, was meant to depict a drug trip. According to the composer's own detailed program, his symphony aimed to describe the tortured dreams of a sensitive artist in lovesick despair who takes an overdose of opium and becomes haunted by visions of an unattainable woman. In the course of five movements, he first tempers his depression, volcanic love and jealous rages through religious consolation; encounters her at a festive ball; seeks solace wandering in the countryside only to have her disrupt his idyll; is condemned and guillotined for murdering her; and finally sees his funeral plummet into a witches' desecration of the Sabbath which she leads to a climactic orgy. Did Berlioz actually compose his Fantastique Hamlet but by Harriet Smithson, the Irish actress who played Ophelia. Deeply smitten, he desperately tried to attract her attention, but the superstar spurned the unknown composer's attempts, even declining to attend two concerts he arranged for her. When she finally returned home without meeting him, Berlioz sublimated his frustration into the Symphonie Fantastique , his first major work. (The final movement was impelled by rumors that Smithson was having an affair with her manager; as revenge, Berlioz symbolically cast her into hell as a whore.)
