A leading figure of French Romanticism, Hector Berlioz was considered to be an outsider as far as the French musical establishment was concerned and not all his works were well received. While he was still a student at the Paris Conservatoire, he fell in love with the Irish actress, Harriet Smithson, who had come to Paris to perform in a season of Shakespeare and they were married a year later. Berlioz loved literature of great themes and passions and some of his greatest works were inspired by the writings of Byron, Shakespeare and Goethe. The years following his second marriage to the singer, Marie Recio, were the happiest and most productive of his life. He spent much of his time travelling in Europe, finding audiences outside Paris more receptive to his innovative ideas. He was admired as a conductor, critic and writer. He wrote two volumes of Memoirs which are a fascinating, if prejudiced, account of musical life in Paris in his time. Hector Berlioz Works
The meadow scene in the Symphonie fantastique of 1830, an orchestral work that contains autobiographical elements and suggests new paths in composition, expresses the great "yearning" underlying the romantic imagination.

Hector Berlioz
French Grenoble , 11 December, 1803; d. at Paris , 8 March, 1869. His father, a physician, wished Hector to follow his own profession, and for that purpose sent him to the Medical School in Paris . Young Berlioz soon changed the dissecting room for the library of the Conservatoire, where he sought to acquaint himself with the scores of the masters of music. Heretofore his musical studies had been confined to a rudimentary knowledge of the flute and of the guitar. After studying harmony with Lesveur for a few months, Berlioz composed a mass, which was performed in the church of St. Roch . Being admitted to the Conservatoire in 1823, he became noted not only for his great talent, but also for his rebellion against academic traditions. For the pure classicism of Cherubini , the head of the school , he had no respect, nor did he ever learn to understand and appreciate Palestrina ideas in his own fashion, Berlioz, like the romanticists in literature, proceeded by violating or ignoring every established rule. As a consequence he never fully mastered the various forms of composition. With his "Fantastic Symphony", a cantata called "La mort de Sardanapale" which won for him the

(more info) Orchestral Music The Symphonie fantastique of 1830, an orchestral work that contains autobiographical elements, suggested new paths in composition. This was followed four years later by Harold in Italy, for viola and orchestra, with a narrative programme of literary origin, written for but never performed by the great violinist Paganini. Concert overtures include a Shakespearean King Lear and two overtures based on the work of Sir Walter Scott, Waverley and Rob Roy. The overture Le carnaval romain (Roman Carnival) was derived from his opera Benvenuto Cellini, while Le corsaire has at least Byronic overtones. His interest in Shakespeare, increased by his love affair and later unsuccessful marriage with the Shakespearian actress Harriet Smithson, had a further result in the dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet.

Après deux siècles qui voient naître la symphonie, la cantate et le concerto, le XIXe siècle éclate comme un orage. Les nouveaux compositeurs expriment leurs passions à travers la musique. HECTOR BERLIOZ
Died: March 8, 1869. Paris, France
In his own words...

"To render my works properly requires a combination of extreme precision and irresistible verve, a regulated vehemence, a dreamy tenderness, and an almost morbid melancholy." French composer, conductor and writer on music. Berlioz played a decisive role in the development of program music and modern orchestration.
The overwhelming majority of Romantic composers were pianists. Many, such as Chopin and Liszt , were virtuoso performers as well as composers. Hector Berlioz was a notable exception to this rule. In fact, he never studied piano. Berlioz was born to a well-to-do family and as a child learned flute and guitar and managed to teach himself the rudiments of harmony from his reading of textbooks. His parents sent him to Paris in 1821 to study medicine (his father was a doctor), but after two years (miserable years by Berlioz's account) he left his studies behind to attend classes at the conservatory.
During his studies at the conservatory, Berlioz competed for the Prix de Rome four times, finally winning it in 1830. It was in this same year that he wrote his most famous piece, the

A similar work written by Berlioz in imitation of Haydn's masterpiece was favorably received by his friends. From Paris, where he had been sent to complete his medical studies, he at last made known to his father the unalterable decision of devoting himself entirely to art, the answer to which confession was the withdrawal of all further pecuniary assistance. In order to support life Berlioz had to accept the humble engagement of a singer in the chorus of the Gymnase theatre. Soon, however, he became reconciled to his father and entered the Conservatoire, where he studied composition under Reicha and Lesueur. His first important composition was an opera called Les Francs-Juges , of which, however, only the overture remains extant.
