Luciano Berio (1925-2003)
One of Italy's greatest avant-garde composers, Luciano Berio was born in 1925 to a musical family that eagerly guided him into the world of composition. He studied at Milan until 1951, and then set upon a long career of living alternately in Italy and the United States, studying under various modernist masters and forging his own unique style. In 1950 he married American singer Cathy Berberian, and many of his pieces are written for her voice. From 1955 to 1960, he directed the "Studio di Fonologia Musicale," a center for electronic music which he and Bruno Maderna had founded at RAI (Italian Radio). After another decade of living in America, he returned to Italy and founded "Centro Tempo Reale," an institute for music research which drew together musicians and computer science experts in order to advance and explore new forms of composition.
Of the same generation as Cage, Boulez and Stockhausen, Berio pioneered modernism in music and the use of electronics to explore new musical frontiers. He employed a myriad of idioms and techniques during his long and prolific career, specializing in works for the voice, "chance" music, serialism, electronic music, and most famously, a series of virtuoso solo pieces called "Sequenzia." Berio was also fascinated with literature, particularly twentieth century modernism and postmodernism. Italo Calvino wrote the text for two of Berio's stage works, and his work in Italian radio led him to a friendship with Umberto Eco. It was perhaps only natural that he should turn to Joyce and Beckett for musical inspiration.

Born into a musical family in 1925, Luciano Berio's first teacher was his father. At the Milan Conservatoire, he studied composition under Paribene and Ghedini, and orchestral conducting under Votto and Giulini. Dallapicolla was also to play an important part in his training.
In 1955 he founded, together with his friend Bruno Maderna, the studio of phonology of the RAI in Milan, where Luigi Nono soon joined them. This was the era of the first electro-acoustic discoveries (Thema / Omaggio a Joyce, 1958, and Allez-Hop, based on a text by Calvino, 1959). Berio confirmed his reputation as a pioneer, an explorer. Between 1960 and 1972, he gave many classes in Darmstadt, Darlington, at Mill's College, at Harvard, at The Juilliard School, and at Columbia University. At the same time, he was becoming interested in rock and folk music, devoting essays to these forms, and frequently mingling them with his own compositions. The decade produced such works as Visage (The Face), Passagio, Folk Songs (1964, first version), Laborintus II, the Sequenza series: works which seem impregnated with all living forms.

An ear for Berio. (Luciano Berio)
Economist (US), The March, 1989 Content provided
in partnership with An ear for Berio IN A famous outburst, Pierre Boulez once advocated blowing up the opera houses as the only solution to their stodgy, self-satisfied conservatism. His position is increasingly hard to sustain. Modernist operas are growing in number, and a spate of works by both old masters (Arnold Schoenberg, Olivier Messiaen) and new stars (Philip Glass and Aribert Reimann) has recently been seen in London. Last month saw an especially significant event, the British premiere of "Un Re in Ascolto" (A King Listens), a "musical action" by Luciano Berio.

It is the goal to have multiple editions of the same work sit next to each other on the shelf. This may occasionally call for using an incorrect, but already existing class number or cutter number. Luciano Berio (1925-2003) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , Luciano Berio is an Italian composer, pupil of Dallapiccola; has employed spatial effects, e.g. in "Circles" (text by E.E. Cummings) for voice, harp, and 2 percussion; has also written electronic music, and works allowing free choice by performers. A series of pieces each called "Sequence" ( sequenza ) is for different solo instruments - no. 5 for trombone, no. 6 for viola. His Sinfonia (orchestra, organ, piano, harpsichord, chorus, reciters) incorporates a section of Mahler's symphony no. 2.
in an article on Berio's Gesti in "The Recorder and Music Magazine" (November 1966) also says that "Gesti" can be thought of as a little sequenza
