Introduction
Along with Anton von Webern , Alban Berg ranks among the most highly regarded pupils of Arnold Schoenberg . Under his guidance, Berg began to compose under the systems that Schoenberg had created. These three composers formed what was known as the "Second Viennese School," and at this school, they would teach the theory of atonalism serialism and the twelve-tone technique . These three composers would go on to revolutionize the way the world heard music in the twentieth century.
Historical Context
Alban Berg was born on February 9th, 1885 in Vienna as son of a bookseller. Due the massive inheritance he received, he could focus his entire life on composing music. He lived his entire life in Vienna, and thus was heavily influenced by the composers and conductors in that musical capital of the world. Before his was taken in under Schoenberg's wing in 1904, he had no formal music training, as did many of other composers. In 1908 he wrote his first piece that was late-Romantic in style. In 1910, he publish his

And one musician who would have totally agreed with its implications was Anton Webern himself. An obsessively orderly and pietistic spirit, he not only held that "music is natural law as related to the sense of hearing", but that the severe serial configurations of his mature style represented the ultimate unification of the tonal and motivic techniques that had run through the Austro-German tradition since before Haydn. Rome's "Wozzeck" In Memory Of Rome's Victims Of The Shoah
On November 3, 1942, Alban Berg's Wozzeck , banned in Germany as degenerate art, had its Italian premiere at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma (then Teatro Reale) . Rome's opera house has gracefully chosen to dedicate their recent season premiere another Wozzeck , this time staged by Giancarlo Del Monaco and conducted by maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti to the memory of the 1,024 Roman Jewish citizen who in October 1943 were kidnapped by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz. Ticket prices for the performance had been heavily marked down to a very affordable 20-30 euros. Corriere della Sera hailed the production's minimalist staging as a "genius" premise, Jean-Philippe Lafont's "impressive" "voice" and "charisma", Gelmetti's "natural" talent for conducting music written by very different composers; big props to Janice Baird 's " musicalissima Marie", "most musical Marie". Alban Berg
Classical 20th/21st Century
Main Albums / Singles ... My Favourites
(b. Vienna, 9 Feb 1885; d. there, 24 Dec 1935)
Austrian composer. He wrote songs as a youth but had no serious musical education before his lessons with Schoenberg, which began in 1904. Webern was a pupil at the same time, a crucial period in Schoenberg's creative life, when he was moving rapidly towards and into atonality. Berg's Piano Sonata op.1 (1908) is still tonal, but the Four Songs op.2 (1910) move away from key and the op.3 String Quartet (1910) is wholly atonal. Berg dedicated it to his wife Helene, whom he married in 1911.
Then came the Five Songs for soprano op.4 (1912), miniatures setting poetic instants by Peter Altenberg. This was Berg's first orchestral score, and though it shows an awareness of Schoenberg, Mahler and Debussy, it is brilliantly conceived and points towards Wozzeck - and towards 12-note serialism, notably in its final passacaglia. More immediately Berg produced another set of compact statements, the Four Pieces for clarinet and piano op.5 (1913), then returned to large form with the Three Orchestral Pieces op.6 (1915), a thematically linked sequence of prelude, dance movement and funeral march. The prelude begins and ends in the quiet noise of percussion; the other two movements show Berg's discovery of how traditional forms and stylistic elements (including tonal harmony) might support big structures.
In May 1914 Berg saw the Vienna premiere of Buchner's Woyzeck and formed the plan of setting it. He started the opera in 1917, and finished it in 1922. He made his own selection from the play's fragmentary scenes to furnish a three-act libretto for formal musical setting: the first act is a suite of five character pieces, the second a five-movement symphony, the third a set of five inventions on different ostinato ideas. The close musical structuring, extending to small details of timing, may be seen as an analogue for the mechanical alienness of the universe around Buchner's central characters, though Berg's music crosses all boundaries, from atonal to tonal (there is a Mahlerian interlude in D minor), from speech to song, from cafe music to sophisticated textures of dissonant counterpoint. Wozzeck had its premiere in Berlin in 1925 and thereafter was widely produced, bringing Berg financial security.

Alban Berg: 12-tone's popular composer 1885-1935
A school with one headmaster, two students and no classroom normally wouldn't operate for long. But only three people were involved in the so-called New Viennese School during the first third of this century, and it would take the combined intellectual muscle of Harvard, Juilliard and every major European conservatory to equal the influence this informal gathering of composers has had on music in our time. The figurative headmaster was Amold Schoenberg, an important figure covered a couple of pages back. Schoenberg pioneered the 12-tone technique of composition, in which a piece of music was derived from 12 notes arranged in whatever manner the composer wished, but in which traditional harmony took no part. The star pupil and egghead who surpassed his master was Anton Webern, who was slavishly imitated by university-based and uptown New York composers in the 1950s and '60s. Alban Berg was the New Viennese School's homecoming king. He used the 12-tone technique like a good schoolboy, but developed a popular following unlike the intellectual klatch around Schoenberg and Webern. Under Schoenberg's guidance, the young Berg gave up traditional tonality, although he did not follow Schoenberg's example in writing music that sounded as spitefully atonal as possible. Berg's scores carry vestiges of tonality; that's what has made his works more acceptable to people who resist Schoenberg.

by Willem Pijper (translated by Herbert Antcliffe) W The Double Concerto, for example, shows such a degree of bewilderingly complicated form and harmonic mechanism, that one begins to doubt the autonomy expressionisme avant la lettre was, in itself, neither better nor worse than any arbitrarily chosen veriste This technique is entirely different from that of Debussy in co-operation with a Maeterlinck. With the French master it was a clarification, an efflorescence of an enormous number of psychological data already brought up for consideration in words and ideas. With Alban Berg, on the contrary, it is the bringing to the consciousness ( ) primarily through the music, of certain passions latent beneath the surface of the figures. Though this is at once evident why Berg, for the composition of such an elementary action, found so many more notes and formulae necessary than did Debussy for his relatively long-spun and utterly refined dramae lyrique in spite of the school.
