NYT Guide to Essential Knowledge Berg, Alban Berg, Alban b. Vienna, 1885; d. 1935. Austrian composer. While embracing both atonality and the 12- tone method, Berg brought a welcome emotionality to what were often perceived as cold and calculating forms; he became one of the most influential composers of the early 20th century. His early studies with Schoenberg, along with a friendship with another composer, Webern, influenced Berg's entry into the avant-garde. Notable works include Altenberglieder (1912); Chamber Concerto for pianoforte, violin, and 14 wind instruments (1923-25); Lyric Suite for string quartet (1925-26); Der Wein (1929); Violin Concerto (1935); and the operas Wozzeck (1914-22) and Lulu (1929- 35)

      About
As a student of Schoenberg, Austrian composer Alban Berg was one of the most important atonal composers to emerge in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Vienna in February 1885, and began composition lessons with Schoenberg in 1904. His earliest work, 1908's Piano Sonata and 1910's Four Songs, still have a basis in tonality, but by the time he produced his Five Songs for soprano in 1912, the orchestral setting displayed great interest in 12-note serialism. In May, 1914, Berg saw the Vienna premiere of Buchner's Woyzeck and decided to compose his own setting of the opera, which was finished in1922. With its omnivorous patchwork of simple cafe music and elaborate counterpoint, tonality and atonality, it premiered in Berlin in 1925, establishing Berg as a leading composer. Other significant works include his 1926 Lyric Suite for string quartet (whose long-secret programme relates Berg's romantic desires for Hanna Fuchs-Robettin) and his final opera

      Berg, Alban
Berg, Alban key , Austrian composer. In his youth he taught himself music but in 1904 he became the pupil and close friend of Arnold Schoenberg. Later Berg himself taught privately in Vienna. He adopted atonality and later the twelve-tone technique of Schoenberg, although he tempered it with the lyric and dramatic qualities of the Viennese romantic tradition. His masterpiece, the opera Wozzeck (based on the play Woyzeck atonality ) with occasional intrusions of tonality, aroused strenuous protest, but it has since been acclaimed as a major work of the 20th-century musical stage. Berg was born in Vienna on February 9, 1885, and trained under the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, the originator of the twelve-tone system. Berg treated the twelve-tone method quite freely, integrating into it techniques and forms from 17th-, 18th-, and 19th-century music. His early works, such as the Altenberg Lieder (1912), for voice and orchestra, show the influence of late romantic composers such as Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler.

At the age of 19, he became a student of composer Arnold Schoenberg and remained close to him for the rest of his life. He generally followed his teacher in the use of atonality and the 12-tone system (see Music ). One of Berg's earliest works to use atonality was his String Quartet of 1910. His first major work using the 12-tone system, also for string quartet, was the Lyric Suite (1927). Berg, Alban Maria Johannes
    Vienna 1885 - Vienna 1935
    Biography
Alban Berg , with Anton Webern and their teacher Arnold Schoenberg , together make up the group of composers generally known as the Second Viennese School in the early years of the twentieth century. The technical compositional systems developed by Schoenberg, a logical extension of Wagnerian chromaticism, had a profound effect on the course of music throughout the century, as traditional tonalities and keys were seemingly abandoned, dissonances differently handled and principles of musical unity developed into a very different language. Under the tutelage of Schoenberg Berg continued, with some diffidence, to develop his own distinctive musical language. His studies came to an end in 1911, when Schoenberg moved once more to Berlin, and the following year he wrote his Altenberger Lieder, Opus 4, works of exemplary brevity and intensity. Two of the songs were performed in 1913 in Vienna under the direction of Schoenberg, but the concert could not be continued, when a vocal clique in the audience made its objections clear. Schoenberg, who had come from Berlin for the occasion, expressed his own criticism of the work.
