Life
Born: 13 April 1816 Died: 01 February 1875 Biography William Sterndale Bennett was born 13th April 1816 in Sheffield and died 1st February 1875 in London. He came from a musical family, his father was the organist of Sheffield Parish Church. He became a chorister at King's College, Cambridge aged 8 years and at 10 passed to The Royal Academy of Music where, at 17, Mendelssohn found him and impressed by his power, invited him to Leipzig in Germany. Here Schumann wrote enthusiastically about him and dedicated his Etudes Symphoniques for piano to him. Unfortunately, later life did not fulfil earlier promise due, no doubt, to the pressure of teaching pianoforte, the Principalship of The Royal Academy, the Professorship of Music at Cambridge (1856 - 75) and a heavy commitment to conducting, to all of which he gave himself tirelessly. He was knighted in 1871. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. Works include: 'The Woman of Samaria', the incidental music to Sophocles' Ajax, odes for International Exhibition (Tennyson), Cambridge Installation of the Chancellor (Kingsley), anthems, Symphony in G Minor, Fantasy Overture on Moore's Paradice and the Peri, four piano concerti, pieces and songs, but the earlier works some 30 years before are the best he composed. They include the delicate overtures 'The Naiads' (1836) and 'The Wood-Nnymphs' (1837) and Cantata 'May Queen' composed for the opening of Leeds Town Hall in 1858 which remained popular for many years.

BENNETT, WILLIAM STERNDALE BIOGRAPHY
With musical gifts much admired by his friend Robert Schumann, Bennett (who never used the name Sterndale) briefly enjoyed popularity as a composer, although his obvious abilities were later submerged in the demands of public life, as Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge and later as Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. Interest in his music is now growing, with the occasional revival in particular of his piano music and five Piano Concertos. His songs remain an important example of the genre in mid-19th century England. Orchestral Music The third and fourth piano concertos are a good introduction to Sterndale Bennett's music, the first with a romantic slow movement and the latter with a Barcarole (Gondolier's Song) slow movement, inserted at the suggestion of Mendelssohn.

by John Weeks Moore Benmarcato Bennett, William Sterndale . One of the most admired of the English composers now living, whose style, however, is so completely imbued with the peculiarities of Mendelssohn, of whom he was a favorite and devoted pupil, that it can scarcely be called original. He was born in 1816. His early orchestral compositions and songs (quite in the manner of German Lie-der) were hailed as evincing most rare promise. His romantic overtures, called "The Naiads," and "The Wood Nymph," are still favorites in the concert room, and are remarkable for a certain vein of delicate and fairy-like imagination, and for their great resemblance to the overtures of Mendelssohn, of which, however, they are but pale and feeble copies. We do not hear of any works of magnitude produced by this writer since these early efforts. John Stainer
A Life in Music
JEREMY DIBBLE

One of the most important musicians of the Victorian era, Stainer is known for his considerable influence as a composer of Anglican liturgical music, and his corpus of secular works – madrigals and songs – presents many surprises. He was a brilliant organist, a fine scholar, theorist, pedagogue and teacher – multifarious attributes which this study seeks to elucidate and understand as part of his wider musical personality. Stainer’s life is a story of extraordinary social
mobility. From lowly origins he rose to become organist of St Paul’s Cathedral and Professor of Music at Oxford. Yet after his premature death in 1901 he suffered almost
immediate neglect except for the popularity of a handful of works, among them I saw the Lord and The Crucifixion. In attempting to rehabilitate Stainer and the crucial
contribution he made to musical life, this book examines the breadth of his work as a composer, and the important role he played in the regeneration of sacred and secular
