The Sleepwalker or The Sleepwalking Girl was the seventh of Bellini's 10 operas. First heard on 6 March 1831 at the Teatro Carcano, Milan, it was an overwhelming success and frequent performances quickly followed in Paris, London and New York. The libretto, by Felice Romani, is based on Eugène Scribe's 1819 ballet-pantomime La somnambule, ou L'arrivée d'un nouveau seigneur . The gentle, pastoral story takes place in a small Swiss village and, in brief, revolves round the nocturnal habit of the heroine, Amina: she sleepwalks. Though betrothed to Elvino, she makes an unfortunate somnambulist excursion into the bedroom of Count Rodolfo, a handsome castle-owning aristocrat who has recently returned to the village. Understandably, Elvino is, to say the least, upset. The Count, in the face of mounting scepticism, very decently supports Amina's explanation, but it is only when Elvino, the Count and all the villagers witness her sleepwalking along the edge of the roof above the mill race that her story is believed. She comes down from the roof singing rather pathetically of her love for Elvino. He awakens her and she is overjoyed to find that the man she loves still wants to marry her. The opera ends with the whole village celebrating.

Bellini's music represents the Italian operatic school at its most glorious melodiousness, truly reflected by the term "bel canto." In his writing, the words, the rhythm, the melody, the harmony, and the instrumental accompaniment unite in mutual perfection. The lyric flow and dramatic expressiveness of his music provide a natural medium for singers in the Italian language, with the result that his greatest masterpieces, "La Sonnambula" and "Norma," remain in the active repertoire of opera houses of the entire world, repeatedly performed by touring Italian opera companies and by native forces everywhere.

    Description
Bellini's La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) is a Melodramma in two acts and was first performed in Milan, 1831. The work is a light, romantic comedy of errors centred around the misunderstanding of the heroine's sleepwalking activities, and the Italian Bel Canto style makes large technical demands of the abilities of the performers. The story itself is based upon a ballet by Eug¨ne Scribe, with a libretto by Felice Romani becoming the vehicle for Bellini's delicate and descriptive melodic writing.

Vincenzo Bellini

Bellini, Vincenzo, Italian opera composer. He acquired his musical training from his grandfather and father, and began composing religious and secular music in his childhood. His first opera, Adelson e Salvini, was successfully performed in 1825. His most celebrated works are the operas La Sonnambula and Norma (both 1831). In their profusely melodic style they exemplify the bel canto tradition of the 18th cent., and their roles demand great virtuosity of the singers. Bellini's last opera, I Puritani (1835), was influenced by the dramatic style of French grand opera. Unlike that of his immediate predecessors, Rossini and Donizetti, his operatic output was small. It was characterized by careful composition, great attention to the relationship between words and music, and an originality of harmony that gave rise to his music's sensual, ecstatic quality. He greatly influenced the work of Verdi.

Of distinguished appearance, with light, wavy hair, delicate features, a high forehead, and elegantly clad, Bellini was the picture of his music. He was born on the 3d of November, 1802, and was not six years old when he began to compose. His father and grandfather were musicians. He was musical by instinct. His technical accomplishments as a composer were never important, but he interested himself in piano-playing, could sing well, and during a happy and uneventful boy-hood composed music of an aria, psalms, and several masses. On his face was already the reflection of that melancholy which colored much of his music and seemed to forecast his early end. Bellini's father had not the funds to educate his son musically. He, therefore, petitioned the municipality to send the boy to Naples, and the necessary allowance was granted in May, 1819. In that year Bellini entered on a course of four years' study at the Naples Conservatory. He had good introductions, and the sorrow of parting from his family he was almost morbidly attached to those whom he loved was tempered by social and musical successes in the city of his sojourn. When his festival cantata, "Ismene," was performed in San Carlo for a birthday in the royal family, the king himself led the applause. At a stroke Bellini had secured the entry not only into the best houses in Naples, but the greatest theaters in Italy.
