Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Symphony no. 9 in D minor, opus 125, Fourth movement 23:22
Text: portions of "Ode to Joy" by Friedrich Schiller I wrote this analysis of the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to aid my students in following along as the music played. The timings are based on the classic 1952 recording conducted by Arturo Toscanini (RCA Victor Gold Seal) 60256-2-RG), but the timings could be adjusted to fit any other recording. Please keep in mind that this was written by a non-musician for non-musicians in a general humanities class and does not pretend to be a technical analysisjust a way of helping beginning listeners to classical music appreciate what is going on. Elapsed time 0:00 The movement opens agitatedly as the orchestra picks up fragments of one theme after another from the previous three movements, as if seeking a satisfactory vehicle for its expression; but each is discarded in turn. 1:15 The first seven notes of the main theme to come are tentatively uttered, but it too is abandoned as the search continues. 2:17 Once again the theme begins, this time in the woodwinds, but it soon breaks off.

"Fidelio," unsuccessful at its première, was twice revised by Beethoven and his librettists and successful in its final version of 1814. Here there is more emphasis on the moral force of the story. It deals not only with freedom and justice, and heroism, but also with married love, and in the character of the heroine Leonore, Beethoven's lofty, idealized image of womanhood is to be seen. He did not find it in real life: he fell in love several times, usually with aristocratic pupils (some of them married), and each time was either rejected or saw that the woman did not match his ideals. In 1812, however, he wrote a passionate love-letter to an "Eternally Beloved" (probably Antonie Brentano, a Viennese married to a Frankfurt businessman), but probably the letter was never sent. With his powerful and expansive middle-period works, which include the Pastoral Symphony (no.6, conjuring up his feelings about the countryside, which he loved), Symphonies nos.7 and 8, Piano Concertos nos.4 (a lyrical work) and 5 (the noble and brilliant "Emperor") and the Violin Concerto, as well as more chamber works and piano sonatas (such as the "Waldstein" and the "Appassionata") Beethoven was firmly established as the greatest composer of his time. His piano-playing career had finished in 1808 (a charity appearance in 1814 was a disaster because of his deafness). That year he had considered leaving Vienna for a secure post in Germany, but three Viennese noblemen had banded together to provide him with a steady income and he remained there, although the plan foundered in the ensuing Napoleonic wars in which his patrons suffered and the value of Austrian money declined.

Overview of repertory:
Beethoven was an extremely important composer of instrumental music (sonatas, concertos, symphonies, and string quartets). He also composed some vocal music, including the Missa Solemnis and the opera Fidelio . In our holdings, Beethoven's works are classified by genre.
Method of identification of works:
Beethoven's works are currently identified by Opus number and, when one exists, by the number of the work within the opus. Many works not published in Beethoven's lifetime do not have opus numbers, but at present none are included in our databases.
Overview of sources used:
Our encodings of Beethoven were initiated with the Breitkopf und H~Drtel edition. Some works have been revised for modern performance. At present one work, the piano concerto No. 2, omits the solo part.
Reference catalogue:
There are many catalogues of Beethoven's works. One of the most widely used is that of G. Kinsky and H. Halm, (Munich and Duisburg, 1955).

Ludwig van Beethoven (LOOD vig von BAY toh vun) was one of the world's greatest composers. He wrote many symphonies , overtures , and pieces for piano and other instruments.
He started studying the piano and violin when he was 4 years old. His father, a singer, was his first teacher. But he was not a good teacher. He beat his son and locked him in a basement to make him practice.
Sometimes when his father came home late after becoming drunk, he would awaken Ludwig and make him practice until morning.
Thirteen-year-old Beethoven
When he was 10 years old, he started taking lessons from Christian Neefe. His new teacher was very patient with him and he began to do well. He wrote his first composition (song) when he was 11. When he was 12, his teacher let him direct the orchestra part of the time.
When he was 22, he moved to Vienna and studied with Joseph Haydn (HI dn). Haydn insisted his student write "pupil of Haydn" at the top of each song he wrote. Beethoven became tired of giving Haydn credit for his songs and quit studying with him.
Most composers at this time were hired by people to write music, and they were told what kind of music to write. Beethoven, however, was treated as a friend, not an employee. He wrote the kind of music

". . . Music is neither old nor modern: it is either good or bad music, and the date at which it was written has no significance whatever. Dates and periods are of interest only to the student of musical history. . . . All old music was modern once, and much more of the music of yesterday already sounds more old-fashioned than works which were written three centuries ago. All good music, whatever its date, is ageless - as alive and significant today as it was when it was written . ." (Peter Warlock)

Ludwig Van Beethoven
For years I have avoided almost all society, because I cannot tell people I am deaf . I have to appear as a misanthrope; I, who am so little of one.
Beethoven
What musician, going up the Rhine, would fail to make a call at the pretty university town of Bonn, where Ludwig van Beethoven was born in the December of 1770? There, to-day, stands a memorial monument, on the pedestal of which is engraved, in all its rugged simplicity and appropriateness, the one word "BEETHOVEN." And there, too, in a side street known as the Bonngasse, one may see the identical house whose lowly walls echoed to the infant cries of this musical giant who bound the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. For many years the house was given over to common and even ignoble uses; but at last, in 1889, it was purchased (for nearly £3000) by a number of Beethoven enthusiasts, and now it is filled with relics of Beethoven interest, which every admirer of the great master loves to see.
In process of time the future composer’s musical sensibilities awakened, and having been sent to the Court organist for lessons, he made such progress that before he was twelve he was deputizing for his master at the Court chapel. At thirteen he became a "cembalist" a pianist, as we would say in the are orchestra. And thereby hangs a tale. One of the singers, a man named Keller, had been boasting of his correct ear, and declaring that Beethoven could not "throw him out." A wager was ultimately accepted on the point. During an interlude in one piece, Beethoven modulated to a key so remote that, though he struck the note which Keller should have taken up, Keller was defeated, and came to a dead stand. Exasperated by the laughter of the audience, he complained of Beethoven to the Elector, who gave the cembalist "a most gracious reprimand," and told him not to play any more clever tricks of that sort.
