How to Write an American Symphony:
Amy Beach and the birth of "Gaelic" Symphony In 1894, Amy Beach (1867-1944) began work on her Symphony in E-minor, ("Gaelic"), completing it in 1896. Four of the symphony's themes are traditional Irish-Gaelic melodies, hence the designation, "Gaelic." In choosing Irish music, Beach tapped into a rich heritage that had been part of the American musical mainstream for at least a century, and by the 1890s, was assimilated into the new genre called popular music. Beach, who signed all her music "Mrs. H. H. A. Beach," was the youngest member of the Boston composers' group, the country's first school of art music. Born Amy Marcy Cheney in the small town of Henniker, New Hampshire, at age four she began playing piano and composing. The family relocated to Boston in 1875, where she made her piano debut at sixteen, playing Moscheles Piano Concerto in G minor with orchestra. Critics found her musicianship and technical equipment superb. At her debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1885, she earned glowing reviews for her performance of Chopin's F-minor Concerto . Equally gifted in composition, her first big success came when Boston's Handel and Haydn Society gave the premiere of her Mass in E-flat, op. 5, a 75-minute work for solo quartet, chorus, organ, and orchestra. The premiere of the "Gaelic" Symphony, on 30 October 1896 was given by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She was now "one of the boys," or so composer George Whitefield Chadwick wrote, signaling acceptance by the established Boston composers: men were symphonists, not women.

Romantic Composer Index In her own words.... "The women composers of today have advanced in technique, resourcefulness, and force, and even the younger composers have achieved some effects which the great masters themselves would never have dared to attempt. The present composers are getting away more and more from the idea that they must cater to the popular taste, and in expressing their individual ideas, are giving us music of real worth and beauty." American composer and pianist. She was the first significant female composer in America and one of the leading composers of the "New England School." By all measures, young Amy Marcy Cheney was a true prodigy. At one year she knew forty songs, always singing them at the same pitch. By age two she could improvise a countermelody to any melody her mother sang, and at age four, she could not only read four-part hymns at sight, but wrote her first pieces in her head and then sat down and played them on the piano. She began piano study at age six with her mother, and then studied with the finest pianists in Boston. She made her debut at sixteen, and in 1885 played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. From this point on, her career was influenced greatly by society's views of women. It was suggested that her desire to study composition would best be served by independent study, in part in the belief that women composed based on feeling rather than intellect. When she married the physician and amateur musician Henry Harris Aubrey Beach in 1885, he asked that she limit her concertizing to a few performances a year. Because of this, she focused on composition. After his death in 1910, she resumed her concert career in Europe and in this country.

Born in Henniker, NH just after the Civil War Amy Cheney was composing piano tunes by age four. Today she is remembered as "America's first distinguished and celebrated woman composer". The NH prodigy was performing publicly in Boston by age 16. At 18 she married a prominent 43-year old Boston doctor who urged his wifeto compose rather than perform on the piano. As Mrs. H.H. A. Beach she composed more than 150 numbered works - choral, orchestral, sacred, songs. She composed music to the poetry of major poets and, after her husband's death, toured Europe with great success after the turn of the 20th century. She attended the MacaDowell summer artist's colony in Peterborough, NH for two decades starting in 1921. Her work thrives today on the Internet, in CD, in sheet music, on digital files, in books - and her compositions are continually performed.

The musical background of Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944) reads like that of many well-known male composers: Her talent was recognized at a very early age, she began writing music at age four, and gave her first public performances at age seven. However, this great American composer is widely unknown, despite the fact that she made substantial contributions to the world of music. Beach was born in New Hampshire, and her obvious predisposition for music was realized there. In 1875, her family moved to Boston, a center for culture and music. In this environment, she was able to further pursue her study of music. While playing publicly and studying music, Beach also continued to write. An interesting meeting with the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow inspired her to write music for his poem, "The Rainy Day." This became her first published work, in 1875, at the young age of thirteen. The year 1885 also brought two major changed to Beach's life. She made her piano-playing debut with the prestigious Boston Symphony Orchestra, and she married Dr. Henry Beach, a prominent doctor and Harvard professor. She was eighteen; he was forty-three.

A spate of recent recordings of the music of Amy Beach (1867-1944) has brought the percentage of works on disc to over fifty percent. Now some record stores have five or six CDs sitting behind the Beach divider at any one time. One can find her opera, Cabildo, in a recording by some of today’s outstanding singers (e.g., Lauren Flanigan, Paul Grove, and Anthony Dean Griffey). There are two recordings each of the piano concerto and “Gaelic” symphony, but not one of her delightful light orchestral work, Bal masque, played recently by the Boston Pops. Also in the half empty department are concert arias, the Mary Stuart soliloquy, Eilende Wolken, Segler der Lüfte, for mezzo and orchestra, and Jephthah’s Daughter, for soprano and orchestra—singers, take note. Of her songs, about one third are recorded to date, among them the best known—e.g., the three Browning songs—and lesser known but stunning “Rendez-vous” and “In the Twilight.” Still awaiting singers are many fine songs. For starters, see two songs to German texts, the peaceful “Nachts” (Night), and the dramatic “Allein,” the latter on the same text as Schubert’s “Ihr Bild” and Clara Schumann’s “Ich stand in dunklen Traümen.”

    Amy Beach
Amy Beach was born on September 5, 1867 in Henniker, New Hampshire. A child prodigy, she sang over forty songs at age one and later at age two, improvised from her mother’s lullabies. She began composing at four, and at six her mother began teaching her piano. After her mother’s instruction, she learned from the finest pianists in Boston. She was not allowed the education that most musicians received because she was a woman, so she taught herself how to compose. This is also the main reason that she was the first American trained concert pianist (Crawford 370). Amy said that she could see colors. To Amy G was red and A was green. Amy said her mother was a brilliant pianist. At sixteen, Amy debuted in Boston playing Moscheles Piano Concerto in G-minor with an orchestra. She also played Chopin’s F-minor Concerto with the Boston Symphony O Although her education was limited, she was permitted to be creative and develop as an artist. Many factors contributed to Beach’s success in a world hostile to female composers. Her mother moved in with her and her husband after Amy’s father died. Americas’s Musical Life: A History. When her husband died in 1910 and her mother a year later, Amy found a new independence and toured Europe until WWI. This seventy-five minute piece was warmly received because Phillip Hale, one of Boston’s most astute critics, commended her original ideas.

Thanksgiving - Books, Beach, Running, and Amy
When some people think of Thanksgiving, they think of turkey and football. I think of sleeping late and reading a book a day. Amy and I are in Cabo San Lucas and off to a good start. Beach running is much different from mountain running, but when you net everything out, it's about the same effort. I'm tracking to a book a day this trip. I started with The Dinner Club which is the story of a bunch of DC-area Internet heavy hitters - including Ted Leonsis, Art Marks, Mario Morino, Russ Ramsey, John Sidgmore, Rajendra Singh, Steve Case, Raul Frenandez, James Kimsey, Bill Melton, Michael Saylor, and Mark Warner - who started an angel group called "Capital Investors." Their investments stunk, but the story of their dinners, the thought process at the time, and their respective struggles with the ending of the Internet-bubble was a nice "recently passed current events retro-read." The Warren Buffet Way was what you'd expect - a solid treatise on Warren Buffet by Robert Hagstrom. As one of the many people on this planet that are simultaneously fascinated by and in awe of Warren Buffett's investing skill and style, this book exceeded my expectations and is a must read if you are into Buffett. The best book so far is Raising The Bar - the story of Gary Erickson and his company - Clif Bar Inc. The first chapter starts off with the story of him deciding to walk away from the sale of Clif Bar for $120m on the day they were signing the definitive documents. He tells an awesome entrepreneurial story - both of the run up to this amazing decision to not sell - as well as the aftermath as he buys out his parter and recreates the magic of Clif Bar. Erickson is a great storyteller, adventurer, and entrepreneur - this one is an inspiration for anyone creating a company.
