Chairman's Message
I want to thank the Suffolk Concert Band, in Ipswich, Suffolk, England (30 miles north of London) and its secretary, Andrew J. Farthing, for their help in preparing for this concert. Andrew provided advice and offered to lend us any music we needed from their band's extensive library. They shipped their music (God Save the Queen and Fantasia on British Sea Songs, which includes Rule Brittania) to us at their own expense, and for that we are most grateful. Another season- our twelfth- has flown by and we are developing plans for our 1997-1998 season. Next season's concert dates are included in this program. Please mark them on your calendar and tell your friends. Meanwhile, the Band has a major performance in July at the Florida Bandmasters Association's Summer Convention in Ocala. We are honored to have that opportunity, and will do our best to please an auditorium full of band directors. Quite a challenge! Have a good summer, and we'll see you next season.

65. Arnold Bax (Composer, Arranger) - Short Biography

Introduction Cantatas Other Vocal Non-Vocal ... Z Arnold Bax (Composer, Arranger) Born: November 8, 1883 - Streatham, London, England
Died: October 3, 1953 - Cork, Ireland The outstanding English composer and poet, Arnold (Edward Trevor) Bax, was born into a Victorian upper-middle-class family, of Dutch descent. He grew up in Ivy Back, a mansion on top of Haverstock Hill, Hampstead. Because of the family affluence, Bax never had to take a paid position, and was free to pursue most of his interests; a sharp contrast to the life of too many Britons, who suffered abject poverty in the infamous slums. Bax displayed early that he was fitted with a powerful intellect and a great musical talent, especially at the keyboard. Playing the Wagner operas at the piano were amongst Bax's favorite activities – one of Bax's first intimate meetings with art music was Tristan und Isolde and its influence is seen in many of Bax's later works ( e.g. Tintagel ). Bax was taught at home, but received his first formal musical education at age 16 from Cecil Sharp and others at the Hampstead Conservatory. Bax was accepted to the Royal Academy of Music in 1900 where he remained until 1905. At the Academy, Bax was taught composition by Frederick Corder, the Piano by Tobias Matthay , and the Clarinet by Egerton. In his composition classes, Corder emphasized the examples of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner, and pointed to their liberal approach to classical form, which led Bax to develop a similar attitude. Bax also had an exceptional ability to sight-read and play complex orchestral scores at the piano, which won him several medals at the Academy. He also won prizes for best musical composition, including the Battison-Haynes prize and the competitive Charles Lucas medal.

Bax, Sir Arnold Edward Trevor Bax, Sir Arnold Edward Trevor (1883-1953), British composer, born in London. Bax was noted for his impressionistic orchestral works and songs based on the writings of modern Irish poets and dramatists. His compositions include three symphonic poems (written between 1913 and 1919), The Garden of Fand, Tintagel, and November Woods; Symphonic Variations, for piano and orchestra (1917); and the satiric ballet The Truth About the Russian Dancers (1920), based on a play by the British writer Sir James Barrie and staged by the Russian-born impresario Sergei Diaghilev. In the 1920s and 1930s he turned to more traditional formal structures, producing seven symphonies (1923-1939), four piano sonatas and three string quartets. Bax's style does not place him within the “pastoral” tradition that became dominant in English music during his lifetime; rather, his impressionistic use of harmony and his lush orchestration give his music an affinity with that of French composers such as Ravel. His sources of inspiration in Celtic mythology also set him apart from the mainstream of English music. He was made Master of the King's Music in 1942.
