Biography Leslie Bassett, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize Rome Prize Fulbright Fellowship to Paris, two Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships, holds membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters, is the Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Music at the University of Michigan , winner of Naumburg Recording Award, the award from the Society for the Publication of American Music, the John Philip Sousa award, the James Phelan Award, and a number of other recognitions. There have been commissions from the National Endowment for the Arts Philadelphia Orchestra Detroit Symphony , Koussevitsky Foundation and McKim foundations in the Library of Congress, Cork Choral Festival Schoenberg Institute , and many others. His orchestral performances include those by Philadelphia New York Boston Chicago ... Detroit , Syracuse, Rome, Zurich, Oporto, Indianapolis , American Composers Orch., Florida , Toledo, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Fresno, Moravia, and Minneapolis, under conductors Ormandy, Mehta, Maazel, Harsh, Solomon, Scaglia, Thor Johnson, Pittman, Ehrling, Jarvi, Herbig, Larry Smith, Comissiona, Meier, Alcantara, Comet, Akiyama, Sternberg, Zimmerman, Hoffman, Micka, Mackerras, etc. Mr. Bassett's scores for band and wind ensemble, soloists, chamber and choral groups are regularly performed. T he Living Composers Project Bassett Leslie (b. January 22, 1923, Hanford, California). American composer of orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal, piano, and organ works that have been performed in the Americas, Asia and Europe. His honors include the Prix de Rome (1961-63), the Pulitzer Prize (1966, for Variations for Orchestra ), two Guggenheim fellowships (1973-74, 1980-81), and the Naumburg Foundation Recording Award (1974, for Sextet [piano, strings]). He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1976 and has earned grants from the Koussevitzky Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. Prof. Bassett is also active in other positions. He worked as an arranger and trombonist in the 13 th Armored Division during World War II. He taught composition at the University of Michigan from 1952-91, where he was chair of the composition department from 1970-88 and the Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor of Music from 1977-91, now emeritus. He was also a co-founder of its electronic music studio in 1964 and of its Contemporary Directions Performance Ensemble in 1966. Edition Peters publishes most of his music.

Short Bio Leslie Bassett was born in Hanford, CA, January 22, 1923, the son of Archibald and Vera Bassett, and grew up on ranches in the San Joaquin Valley. His early music training in Fresno was on piano, trombone, cello and other instruments, and he spent 38 months in army bands during World War II as trombonist, arranger and composer. He enrolled at California State University, Fresno (then Fresno State College) and was principal trombonist with the Fresno Symphony Orchestra. Graduate study at the University of Michigan under Ross Lee Finney was interrupted by a Fulbright Fellowship to Paris and work with Arthur Honegger and Nadia Boulanger.
He joined the Michigan faculty in 1952, then held the Prix de Rome at the American Academy in Rome, 1961-63. He has also worked with the Spanish-British composer Roberto Gerhard and with Mario Davidovsky in electronic music. At Michigan he became chairman of composition, the Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor of Music, and the 1984 Henry Russel Lecturer, the university's highest faculty honor. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Bassett's music has been widely performed by the nation's orchestras, bands, choirs, soloists and ensembles. He has composed electronic music and written for plays, film, and all performing ensembles with the exception of opera. He frequently serves as guest composer with performing ensembles and universities.

The Wooden Prince Duke Bluebeard's Castle (1911), and a ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin (1919), also gained notice. He became better known, however, for his compositions for piano, for violin, and for orchestra. Among his piano works are a set of progressive studies called Mikrokosmos Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (1936) and Concerto for Orchestra The Hungarian Folk Song (tr. 1931) and Serbo-Croatian Folk Songs (with A. B. Lord, 1951). See his letters, ed. by J. Demeny (1971); biographies by H. Stevens (rev. ed. 1964), A. Fassett (1958, repr. 1971), and P. Griffiths (1984); study by E. Antokoletz (1989).
