This man whose music had an elemental sweep, barbaric rhythms, and penetrating force, never weighed more than 116 pounds, and sometimes as little as 87. His slow, even, measured walk was characteristic of his personality . When he came out on the Carnegie Hall stage, with delicate steps, to receive the ovation at the American premiere of his Violin Concerto, one New York newspaper said that he looked like a botany professor from a girls college. But the small and fragile body was endowed with an iron and an uncompromising character. Although he spoke deliberately, with a soft voice, he could say a great deal without using an unnecessary or unimportant word. This mild-mannered composer refused to utter a word he did not believe. He was eminently correct in his attitude toward others and expected the same in return. But he was never as severe with others as he was with himself.

Bela Bartok
Bela Bartok not only is the greatest composer Hungary has produced, but his music - a unique synthesis of the Western classical tradition with mid-European folk music - is one of the outstanding musical achievements of the twentieth century. Bartok was born in Nagyszentmiklos, a small town now in Romania. His father, a teacher and amateur musician, died when Bartok was young, and his mother, Paula, had to support her family by teaching the piano. Paula Bartok was fully aware of her son's musical gifts - his earliest compositions date from his ninth year - and she finally managed to find a permanent teaching position in Poszony (now Bratislava), where she found excellent piano and harmony teachers for the young composer. In 1899 Bartok had to decide where to continue his studies, and although the Vienna Conservatoire was the obvious choice, Bartok followed the advice of his schoolfellow, Erno Dohnanyi, and went to the Budapest Academy. There he was considered a virtuoso pianist of outstanding potential. As a composer, Like Dohnanyi he initially took Brahms as a model. But in 1902 and 1903 he was profoundly affected by two preoccupations: the music of Richard Strauss and the rising tide of Hungarian nationalism. Both influences found expression in 1903 in the symphonic poem Kossuth, based on the life of the leader of Hungary's 1848 uprising. Bartok found a further and more enduring outlet for his nationalist sentiments in Hungarian folk songs, which he started collecting in 1904. This led to a lifelong collaboration with Zoltin Kodaly, a pioneer in the field. From 1906, Bart6k made annual trips, using an Edison phonograph as recording equipment, to collect songs not only in Hungary but also in Romania, Slovakia and Transylvania.

Bela Bartok Life
Arguably the greatest composer of his nation and a proficient pianist, Bartok started a systematic collection of Hungarian folk music and neighbouring regions, often collaborating with his friend Zoltan Kodaly His work in this field deeply influenced his style of composition, which is, however, very much more severe in its apparent mathematical organisation than much of what Kodály wrote. He was out of sympathy with the government that replaced the immediate post-1918 Republic in Hungary, where he was less appreciated than abroad. In 1940 he emigrated to the United States where he died of leukaemia in 1945. Bela Bartok Works
Probably the most popular of Bartok's orchestral compositions is the Concerto for Orchestra, commissioned by Koussevitzky for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The two Violin Concertos are important additions to the solo violin repertoire. The Viola Concerto and the Third Piano Concerto, left in various stages of incompleteness when Bartok died, are moving works, while the two earlier Piano Concertos have much to offer. Died: September 26, 1945, New York
In his own words....
"Many people think it is a comparatively easy task to write a composition on found folk tunes...This way of thinking is completely erroneous. To handle folk tunes is one of the most difficult tasks; equally difficult, if not more so, than to write a major original composition. If we keep in mind that borrowing a tune means being bound by its individual peculiarity, we shall understand one part of the difficulty. Another is created by the special character of folk tune. We must penetrate it, feel it, and bring out its sharp contours by the appropriate setting...It must be a work of inspiration just as much as any other composition."
The folk music of Hungary was central to the music of Béla Bartók. He was not the first composer to make use of this music (we can see it as far back as Haydn), but he was one of the first to take it at face value, and to exploit its idiosyncrasies. More important, he integrated it fully into his own style, so much so that one of his biographers talks about Bartók's music as "imaginary folk music"—music that is wholly his own, yet of a piece with the folk music that was its inspiration.
Kossuth (1903), also stands out for its telling of a nationalist story.

[Index] Bela Bartok - There's a composer at the next station By Norman Lebrecht / September 30, 2004 Bela Bartok, whose statue is going up outside South Kensington station, is our link to the dangerous edge of Europe In reputational retreat, a composer gets stuck in time and place. For Bartok, this was 1930s Budapest: a hillside home, a surge of new scores, all the honours he could covet in a fascist state that grew nastier by the month. In 1940, after his mother died, he forswore comfort and sailed to America where, five years later, he died indigent. He wrote only two works in exile - the Concerto for Orchestra and an unaccompanied sonata for Yehudi Menuhin. The majority of his music is rooted in Budapest. There, the conditions that inspired and repelled him simmer close to the surface. The street walls are pocked with gunshot, some crevices dating back to the civil war of 1919, others to the German and Russian occupations, some recent and mafia-related. I am served lunch by a man whose mother was shot dead as she suckled him at the breast. 'Violent' is an adjective often attached to Bartok's dissonances; it reflects an indigenous reality. Hungary may be a paid up member of the European Union and an avid player in the open market, but its temperament is decidedly intemperate.

Brief biography of Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, whose work was greatly influenced by the folk music of his native land.
Bela Bartok (1881-1945) is considered the greatest Hungarian composer since Liszt. He was born in Nagyszentmiklos on the March 25. His works are influenced by Hungarian folk music, from the folk songs and dances of southern and eastern Europe, and the exotic echoes of North Africa and the Middle East. Considered his famous work is Concerto for Orchestra and opera "Bluebeard's Castle." While his classical music contemporaries like Schoenberg and Stravinsky were creating new music, Bartok was forging both new and old, influenced by Hungarian folk songs.

    About
A laundry list of words can be associated with Bela Bartok: daring, uncompromising, nationalistic, revolutionary. There's no question that this Hungarian composer was a visionary: along with friend Zoltan Kodaly, he is noted as being one of the first ethnomusicologists, going out into the countryside and documenting countless folk songs and all the varying folk idioms in existence. He then absorbed these elements and created music that was as original and unheard of as anything composed in the early part of the twentieth century. Pieces such as
