At the age of nine he wrote to his mother: Dear Mother: I have written to tell you my worrying secret. Now don’t cry when you read it because it is neither yours nor my fault. I suppose I will have to tell it now, without any nonsense. To begin with I was not meant to be an athlete. I was meant to be a composer, and will be I’m sure. Samuel Barber Born: March 9, 1910

Died: January 23, 1981 S amuel Osborne Barber was born on March 9, 1910 in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a family where music and musicians were appreciated, and very early in his youth he proclaimed that he wanted to be a composer. Barely six years old, Samuel Barber began studying piano. He wrote his first composition at seven, and his first opera when he was ten years old. At twelve he filled the position of church organist. When Barber was fourteen years old, he entered Philadelphia's newly-founded Curtis Institute where he studied piano, composing, conducting, and singing. Although composing was his forte, Samuel Barber's singing voice, a rich baritone, was another of his musical talents. B arber's late teenage years were consumed by his serious attention to composing. The Philadelphia Orchestra performed one of his works, Overture to the School of Scandal , when Barber was 23 years old. His compositions covered a wide range, including works for orchestra, opera, ballet, stage, and voice. He is known for his flowing melodies. He is often praised for his lyrical craftsmanship, inspired by his love of poetry. During the course of his career he produced many memorable compositions, the most acclaimed being works such as his beautiful

Born: Died:
Samuel Barber's music, masterfully crafted and built on romantic structures and sensibilities, is at once lyrical, rhythmically complex, and harmonically rich. Born 9 March 1910 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Barber wrote his first piece at age 7 and attempted his first opera at age 10. At the age of 14 he entered the Curtis Institute, where he studied voice, piano, and composition. Later, he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner.
At Curtis, Barber met Gian Carlo Menotti with whom he would form a lifelong personal and professional relationship. Menotti supplied libretti for Barber's operas Vanessa (for which Barber won the Pulitzer) and A Hand of Bridge . Barber's music was championed by a remarkable range of renowned artists, musicians, and conductors including Vladimir Horowitz, John Browning, Martha Graham, Arturo Toscanini, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Jennie Tourel, and Eleanor Steber. His Antony and Cleopatra was commissioned to open the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in 1966.

American composer Samuel Barber often confuses critics. He founded no school; he stuck to no one style. As a public figure, he seemed aloof from the various critical fights of American music: tonal vs. atonal, Igor Stravinsky vs. Arnold Schoenberg Aaron Copland Roy Harris Walter Piston David Diamond, Leonard Bernstein Virgil Thomson Roger Sessions , and Milton Babbitt Barber distinguished himself as a melodist. Almost everything he wrote has at least one gorgeous tune or memorable theme. This alone got him into trouble in certain circles as a stick-in-the-mud or even as a panderer to the vulgar. However, his gift also genuinely puzzled people. There is nothing in a Barber piece that instantly proclaims the composer, as a Copland, Ralph Vaughan Williams , or Sergei Prokofieff work surely does. His melodic emphasis led certain critics to label him "neo-Romantic," a word that doesn't mean all that much. Almost nothing he wrote could have been produced in the Romantic era. The harmonies are too complex and sometimes extremely dissonant, the approach to form is as modern as

BARBER, SAMUEL BIOGRAPHY
Samuel Barber is widely known for his famous Adagio for Strings, the slow movement of a string quartet he wrote in 1936. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1910, he was one of the first students at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied piano, conducting, singing and composition. Awards allowed subsequent study in Rome. He taught briefly at the Curtis Institute, but soon withdrew, sharing a house with his former fellow student Menotti. His music remained neo-romantic in idiom, although not without contemporary influences. Orchestral Music The Adagio for Strings was arranged for string orchestra from the slow movement of Barber's string quartet of 1936 and played in this form by the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Toscanini in New York two years later, in a programme that included his first Essay. Other orchestral compositions include an overture, The School for Scandal, which had won him an award in 1933, concertos for violin, for cello and for piano, a Capricorn Concerto for solo wind instruments and two symphonies. Stage Works Barber wrote three operas, Vanessa, with a libretto by Menotti, A Hand of Bridge, for four singers and chamber orchestra, and Antony and Cleopatra, with a libretto by Zeffirelli. His two ballet scores are Medea and Souvenirs.

SAMUEL OSBORNE BARBER
M usic-making was always a part of Samuel Barber's life, from his earliest years. The nephew of contralto Louise Homer and her husband, the prolific song writer Sidney Homer , Barber had announced his vocation in a note written to his mother at the age of nine:
"I was meant to be a composer and will be I'm sure...Don't ask me to try to forget this unpleasant thing and go play footballplease." Samuel Osborne Barber II was born March 9, 1910, in West Chester, PA, the son of a prominent doctor. Young Sam studied piano at six, began composing at seven, served as a church organist while still in his teens, and developed his attractive baritone voice to the point where he entertained the thought of becoming a professional singer. Enrolled in the newly-founded Curtis Institute at fourteen, Barber studied piano with Isabelle Vengerova, composition with Rosario Scalero, singing with Emilio de Gogorza, and conducting with Fritz Reiner and formed a life-long friendship with Giancarlo Menotti, whom he met in 1928 in Philadelphia. Two years of training in Italy after winning the 1935 Prix de Rome and numerous European jaunts helped the emerging composer to shake off the conservative influences of Homer and Scalero and shape his own distinctive musical language. Barber composed a wide range of stage, orchestral, chamber, piano, choral, and vocal works in what he unassumingly insisted was a personal style "born of what I feel..I am not a self-conscious composer." His discipline and use of traditional forms earned him the reputation of a classicist. Virgil Thomson once wrote that Barber was laying to rest the ghost of Romanticism without violence, though in light of the composer's lush lyricism, deft dramatic sense, and inclination toward Romantic poetic sources (especially in his vocal writing), this comment ultimately proved to be off-mark. Throughout his catalogue of works, Barber adhered stubbornly to his own inner voicea voice rich in subtlety and sumptuousness that relied deeply on melody, polyphony, and complex musical texturesall fused with an unerring instinct for graceful proportion and an unabashed affinity for Romantic thought and emotion.

Barber profile
SAMUEL BARBER Before my university studies, I did not really know much about classical music. I knew with certainty that music was what I loved and wanted most to do. So I then started my studies in music education. I discovered favorite composers with a sense of utter fascination about their music. It was everything old yet new to me. First I loved Antonio Vivaldi and then Claude Debussy, primarily Debussy’s piano music. Then during my second year of study I discovered Samuel Barber. I found Barber’s music rather innocently, not suspecting the level of adoration I would soon possess. In the Fall semester, the Minot State University Wind Ensemble performed Commando March. The music seemed to get to me so it was "under my skin." I loved the rich brass sounds, the bits of solo percussion near the beginning of the piece, the seamless craftsmanship that hid a shifting beat in the middle section. For me it was just a wonderful piece of music to play and hear. Sometime later in the same semester, one of the mezzo-sopranos sang the aria "Must the Winter Come So Soon?" from Barber’s opera Vanessa. The performance had subtlety and artistry. My many compliments went to that lovely mezzo while I then found a new piece of music and a new one of my favorite composers.

    Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981)
Samuel Barber was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA on 9 March 1910. His musical ability emerged at an early age and he had already filled a post as an organist when he was twelve. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Rosario Scalero for composition, Isabelle Vengerova (piano) and Emilio de Gogorza (voice). He was later to return to the Institute to teach orchestration and composition. He began composing seriously in his late teenage years and by the age of twenty three an orchestral work, Overture to the School for Scandal , was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Orchestral writing was to become a main feature of his composition and produced the work for which he is most well known now, Adagio for Strings . He achieved international prominence as the first American to be performed by Toscanini and the NBC Symphony when they introduced the Adagio along with Essay No. 1 for Orchestra After serving in the Army Air Corp (which commissioned him to write his Second Symphony) during World War II he returned to live in the USA, near Mt. Kisco where he shared a house with another great American composer Gian Carlo Menotti. Most of his post-war works were written here. He won two Pulitzer prizes in 1958 (the opera Vanessa- text by Menotti) and 1963 (Concerto for Piano and Orchestra). The world premiere of the opera Antony and Cleopatra opened the new auditorium of the Metropolitan Opera at the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts on 16 September 1966.
