http://www.musicweb-international.com/bantock/
Please NOTE that from 2004 the Bantock Society is no longer active. THE BANTOCK SOCIETY was founded in 1946 under the presidency of Jean Sibelius. A Trust Fund was initially established to promote interest in the life and work of Bantock and amongst the original signatories were Bax, Boult, Boughton, Brian, Dyson, Goosens and Vaughan Williams. Beecham's famous recording of Fifine at the Fair was partly funded by the Society. Since then, the Society has endured, if somewhat intermittently, in the service of Bantock's music. October 1996 marked the 50th anniversary of GB's death and with the recent flourish of excellent recordings and the current revival of interest in the composer's music the Society continues with renewed vigour. The Society now publishes The Bantock Society Journal twice a year in the winter and summer, with two supplementary newsletters in the spring and autumn. The Journal contains articles on Bantock's life and music as well as Society news, details of concerts, letters, books and CD reviews, and acts as a forum of discussion to which members are invited to contribute. You may read an illustrative article: Granville Bantock: The Hebridean Connection by Vincent Budd . The Newsletter keeps members up to date and in touch with all aspects of Bantock-related events. The society also organises meetings, lectures and recitals of Bantock's music. All members will receive the

BANTOCK, GRANVILLE BIOGRAPHY
Granville Bantock was originally intended for the Indian Civil Service. The son of a Scottish doctor, he was born in London in 1868 and turned to music relatively late in adolescence, entering the Royal Academy in 1889 after a period of Trinity College of Music. Under his teacher Federick Corder, a former pupil of Hiller in Cologne, he did well enough to have a number of his student compositions performed at the Academy, including a one-act opera, Caedmar , and Egyptian ballet suite from the incidental music to his own play Rameses II, a dramatic cantata, The Fire Worshippers , and Wulstan , a scena for baritone and orchestra, all marks of his very considerable ambition. In 1893 he left the Academy and for the next three years edited The New Quarterly Music Review He followed this with an ambitious London concert devoted entirely to the music of contemporary British composers, most of whom are now forgotten, except for Bantock himself.

Pierrot of the Minute overture (1908). Also notable amongst his vast output in all genres, much of it inspired by the East, are the Hebridean Symphony (1915), the oratorio Atalanta in Calydon (1911), a symphony for unaccompanied chorus, and Sappho (1906), an orchestral song cycle. Born in London, the son of a doctor, he was educated for the civil service, but entered the Royal Academy of Music in 1889, where some of his earliest works were performed, and Lago produced the opera at the Olympic Theatre in 1892. After some experience in theatrical conducting, he gave a concert of modern English music in 1896. The next year he was appointed conductor at the Tower, New Brighton, where he introduced much contemporary music. In February 1900 he gave a concert of new English music in Antwerp and in September was appointed principal of the Birmingham and Midland Institute School of Music. He remained in Birmingham until 1933, where he succeeded Edward Elgar as professor of music at the university in 1908.
