A new biography of composer Balfe has been long and eagerly awaited. Three 19 th century biographies were compiled, but these were written more as an interesting narrative rather than documents with a high density of facts. The results do not disappoint. Ashgate are to be applauded for having included this title in their music series alongside Music in 19th Century Britain and Light Music in Britain since 1870 . Renewed interest in Balfe is timely as we near the Balfe bi-centenary in 2008 when hopefully full-scale operas will be revived for the BBC Proms and elsewhere. Currently, there are only two professional sources of Balfe's music on CD: Bonynge's The Bohemian Girl (Argo, 1993; now re-released on Decca, 2003), and Bonynge's delightful

In preparation of this libretto I have mostly followed Schirmer's 1902 vocal score, with occasional reference to Novello's 1915 "concert and acting edition". (See note on versions For this libretto, I have chosen to spell out all the words as sung, even where that results in much repetition. This libretto includes all spoken dialogue. In most cases it is immediately apparent which lines are spoken and which lines are sung. For those few places where they may be some doubt, note that for spoken lines the character's name is followed by a colon, and for sung lines it is not. These pages have not been thoroughly proofread for typographical errors. If you find any, please feel free to notify me by e-mail Go back to libretto/texts index August 23, 2001

On the death of his father in he was engaged in the orchestra of Drury Lane , and being in possession of a small but pleasant baritone voice, he chose the career of an operatic singer. An unsuccessful debut was made at Norwich in Carl Maria von Weber 's Der Freischütz . In he was taken to Rome by Count Mazzara[?] , being introduced to Luigi Cherubini[?] on the way. Michael Balfe was born in Dublin in 1808 and then moved to Wexford as a child. It is likely that he was taught to play the piano and violin by his father who, like his father before him, had strong musical leanings. His talent was spotted when aged only nine. He composed a ballad and appeared in Dublin playing a violin concerto. After his father's death Balfe moved to London when aged fourteen. There he was soon accepted as a violinist in the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane orchestra and was given lessons by C. F. Horn, organist at St. George's Chapel, Windsor. He later became leader of the Drury Lane theatre orchestra which, one day, would find itself playing his operas.
