edit Life and career
Balfe was born in Dublin , where his musical gifts became apparent at an early age. The only instruction he received was from his father, who was a dancing master. His family moved to Wexford when he was a child. Between 1814 and 1815, Balfe played the violin for his father's dancing-classes, and at the age of seven composed a polacca . In 1817 he appeared as a violinist in public, and in this year composed a ballad , first called "Young Fanny" and afterwards, when sung in Paul Pry by Madame Vestris, "The Lovers' Mistake". On the death of his father in 1823 the teenager moved to London and was engaged as a violinist in the orchestra of Drury Lane and was given lessons by C. E. Horn , the organist at St. George's Chapel, Windsor (1786 — 1840). He eventually became leader of that orchestra. In 1840, he presented the National Opera at the Lyceum Theatre , but the venture was a failure.

An unsuccessful debut was made at Norwich in Der Freischittz. In 1825 he was taken to Rome by Count Mazzara, being introduced to Cherubini on the way. In Italy he wrote his first dramatic work, a ballet La Perouse.

The Life of Michael William Balfe
Michael William Balfe was born in Dublin in May 1808. His family had been professionally associated with music and the stage for many years. His grandfather played in the band of a Dublin theatre, and it is said that his great-grandfather was a pupil of the famous violinist, Dubourg, who played at the first performance of "The Messiah" in 1742. Balfe’s father was a good violinist himself, and it was from him that the future composer received his first lessons. Later on, being entrusted to a more advanced master, he made such progress that he was able to appear in public in the double character of violinist and composer, too! before he was seven years old. Two years later, Madame Vestris was singing his ballads before enthusiastic audiences in the comedy of "Paul Pry" ballads which are not quite forgotten even now.
Young Balfe went on studying the violin with a view to a professional career until his father died in 1823. Then he determined to try his fortune in London. Charles Edward Horn, the singer (the same who wrote the air of "Cherry Ripe"), happened to be fulfilling an engagement in Dublin. Balfe went to him, and asked to be taken to London as an articled pupil. Horn foresaw a musical future for the young aspirant, and articles were signed for a period of seven years. Balfe had not been many weeks in the metropolis when an unsuccessful début at the Oratorio concerts proved to him the need of further study, and study was diligently pursued for the next few years.

M ichael W illiam B alfe (Composer 1808-1870) Balfe was born in Dublin 15th May 1808 and died in England 20th October 1870. Despite the fact that nowadays ' The Bohemian Girl ' is the only one of his 28 Operas performed - though 'The Siege of Rochelle' 'The Rose of Castile' were performed in the early days of The Wexford Festival - he is really a much neglected as composer, singer and conductor. [I have a recording of The Rose of Castile performance and many of the other Operas performed at Wexford Festival.] He started his career in music very early. By the time he was seven he had composed and had publicly performed a Polacca which, according to Barret in his book, was extant at the time the book was published. He made his violin soloist debut at the age of eight in May 1816. He wrote the Ballad "Young Fanny" which with new words by T Haynes Baley was then called "The Lover's Mistake" before he was nine. This ballad was sung by Madam Vestris and many of the leading singers of that time. It was published later in "The Universal Songster " in 1826. In 1823 shortly after the death of his father he was taken to London where he got a post as violinist in The Drury Lane Theatre Orchestra - eventually becoming leading Violinist with the orchestra.

MICHAEL WILLIAM BALFE, composer of "The Bohemian Girl," was an Irishman of a native intelligence and genius for melody quick to make their mark. The son of a dancing-master, Balfe had his first musical instruction from his father. He played the violin as a young boy for the dancing classes, but studied very little. A polacca which he wrote in his eighth year was so good that a friendly bandmaster, Meadows, could not persuade his men that young Balfe was author of the piece. When he was ten, Balfe composed the first of his ballads, "The Lover's Mistake," ballads which became so popular that they alone would have made him a name. Several of these songs follow, so melodious, simple, and direct in their appeal that they speak for themselves. "Killarney" is one of the most famous of Balfe's compositions and is considered one of the most beautiful of Irish melodies. It was because of these ballads, in advance of the success of "The Bohemian Girl," that Balfe found a place in the hearts of all English-speaking peoples. " The Arrow and the Song" Sung by David Bispham Columbia Record A 5437 "Come Into the Garden, Maud"
