Jump to: navigation search Portrait of Balakirev Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev Russian Milij Alekseevič Balakirev January 2 May 29 ) was a Russian pianist conductor and composer . He is known today primarily for his work promoting nationalism in Russian music. Working in conjunction with critic Vladimir Stasov , Balakirev brought together the composers now known as The Five , encouraging their efforts and acting as a musical midwife for both them and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky . Balakirev's own music is generally not well known today. The exception to this is Islamey: an Oriental Fantasy , which is still popular among pianists.

edit Early years
Balakirev was born at Nizhny Novgorod into a poor clerk's family. He first received a musical education at the behest of his mother, who took him to Moscow in 1847 to receive lessons from Alexander Dubuque . Money problems eventually ended these lessons and forced him to return to Nizhny Novgorod. His talents did not remain unnoticed though; he soon found a patron in nobleman Alexander Oulibichev. Oulibichev was an author of a biography of Mozart and had had a private band and a vast musical library, from which Balakirev obtained a valuable education in music.

BALAKIREV, MILY ALEXEYEVICH BIOGRAPHY
Mili Alexeyevich Balakirev was born at Nizhny-Novgorod in January 1837, the son of a minor government official. His early piano lessons were with his mother, supplemented by a summer visit to Moscow in 1847, when he had some lessons from Alexander Dubuque, a pupil of John Field. It was later in his schooling that he was introduced, through his teacher, to Alexander Ulibishev, a well-to-do landowner, patron of music and writer of books on Mozart and Beethoven. It was through Ulibishev that he was to receive every encouragement, with access to music and opportunities to hear performances at his house, however inadequate these may sometimes have been. Entry to the musical world of St. Petersburg was effected when Ulibishev took Balakirev there in 1855, introducing him to Glinka, the great pioneer of Russian music, and allowing him the opportunity to give public concerts, with considerable success. Nevertheless Balakirev found difficulty in supporting himself, although the death of Ulibishev in 1858 brought him a legacy of 1000 roubles, two violins and his patron's music library. Balakirev's subsequent career brought him, initially, friendship with Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin, his meeting with the last-named in late 1862, nine months after the foundation of the Free School of Music that was to occupy his attention for the next ten years. The financial failure of the Free School concerts brought about his withdrawal from music altogether, his eventual resignation from the directorship of the School in 1874 leading to the succession of Rimsky-Korsakov, whom he was to replace in 1881.

Balakirev, Mily Biography
Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev Russian Russian composer . He is perhaps better known today for bringing together the composers known as The Five than for his own music. He was born at Nizhny Novgorod , and had the advantage as a boy of living with Oulibichev, author of a biography of Mozart , who had a private band, and from whom Balakirev obtained a valuable education in music. At eighteen, after a university course in mathematics , he went to Saint Petersburg , full of national ardour, and there made the acquaintance of Mikhail Glinka . Round him gathered César Cui and others, and in 1862 the Free School of Music was established. In 1869 Balakirev was appointed director of the imperial chapel and conductor of the Imperial Musical Society . His influence as a conductor, and as an organizer of Russian music, give him the place of a founder of a new movement. His works consist largely of songs and collections of folk songs , but include two symphonies, two symphonic poems Russia and Tamara ), and four
