Bach's first music lessons were on the violin, with his father as instructor. Having a beautiful soprano voice, he ... sang in the choir at St. George's Church. On May 3, 1694, his mother died; his father remarried 6 months later but died scarcely 2 months after that. The oldest brother, Johann Christoph, assumed the care of the 10-year-old Johann Sebastian. The boy moved to Ohrdruf to live with his brother, organist at St. Michael's Church. From him Johann Sebastian received his first instruction at the harpsichord and perhaps at the organ. He soon discovered that his pastor, Johann Frohne, was an advocate of Lutheran Pietism. Frohne preferred simplicity in both the liturgy and the music, and the former organist, Johann Georg Ahle, had followed his wishes to a large extent. The very simple musical scores in the choir library reflected this approach. Bach soon became friendly with Reverend George Eilmar, an out-spoken enemy of Pietism, who is thought to be the librettist of at least three cantatas which Bach wrote during the M¼hlhausen tenure. The brilliant setting of Cantata No. 71, Gott ist mein K¶nig (God Is My King), written for the installation service of the city council on Feb. 4, 1708, certainly must have antagonized Reverend Frohne and members of the congregation who were in the audience.

What a Family! Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)
G erman organist and composer of the baroque era, one of the greatest and most productive geniuses in the history of Western music. Bach was born on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, Thuringia, into a family that over seven generations produced at least 53 prominent musicians, from Veit Bach to Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach. Johann Sebastian received his first musical instruction from his father, Johann Ambrosius, a town musician. When his father died, he went to live and study with his elder brother, Johann Christoph, an organist in Ohrdruf. Early Years
I n 1700 Bach began to earn his own living as a chorister at the Church of Saint Michael in Lüneburg. In 1703 he became a violinist in the chamber orchestra of Prince Johann Ernst of Weimar, but later that year he moved to Arnstadt, where he became church organist. In October 1705, Bach secured a one-month leave of absence in order to study with the renowned Danish-born German organist and composer Dietrich Buxtehude, who was then in Lübeck and whose organ music greatly influenced Bach's. The visit was so rewarding to Bach that he overstayed his leave by two months. He was criticized by the church authorities not only for this breach of contract but also for the extravagant flourishes and strange harmonies in his organ accompaniments to congregational singing. He was already too highly respected, however, for either objection to result in his dismissal.
In 1707 he married a second cousin, Maria Barbara Bach, and went to Mülhausen as organist in the Church of Saint Blasius. He went back to Weimar the next year as organist and violinist at the court of Duke Wilhelm Ernst and remained there for the next nine years, becoming concertmaster of the court orchestra in 1714. In Weimar he composed about 30 cantatas, including the well-known funeral cantata God's Time Is the Best, and also wrote organ and harpsichord works. He began to travel throughout Germany as an organ virtuoso and as a consultant to organ builders.

As a German composer whose early works exemplified the grandeur of Baroque style and whose subsequent works evolved into pure Classicism, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's keyboard music offers a charming and historical look into the musical transition between two great eras of music history. Standing in the shadow of his famous father, Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach is sometimes overlooked by historians for his ground-breaking keyboard Sonatas and his significant contribution to Protestant Church music in the second half of the Eighteenth Century.
Most of his music is not as well known as that of his father, but in the second half of the Eighteenth Century, C.P.E. Bach was known as the "Great Bach." He was the second eldest and the most famous of J.S. Bach's sons. An advocate of subjectivity and individual self-expression in music, C.P.E. Bach was quickly hailed as the foremost exponent of the Sturm und Drang movement of the late Eighteenth Century. Growing out of Baroque music, the "Storm and Stress" period can be seen as a time of transition between the works of J.S. Bach, Handel, and Telemann, and those of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
C.P.E. Bach was born in Weimar, Germany on March 8, 1714 as the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and his first wife Maria Barbara. He was baptized on March 10, 1714 with Telemann as one of his godfathers. In 1717 he moved with the family to Cöthen where his father had been appointed

Early Years
God's Time Is the Best, and also wrote organ and harpsichord works. He began to travel throughout Germany as an organ virtuoso and as a consultant to organ builders. Well-Tempered Clavier, the Inventions, and the Little Organ Book. Bach's first wife died in 1720, and the next year he married Anna Magdalena Wilcken, a fine singer and daughter of a court musician. She bore him 13 children in addition to the 7 he had had by his first wife, and she helped him in his work by copying the scores of his music for the performers. Later Years
Bach moved to Leipzig in 1723 and spent the rest of his life there. His position as musical director and choirmaster of Saint Thomas's church and church school in Leipzig was unsatisfactory in many ways. He squabbled continually with the town council, and neither the council nor the populace appreciated his musical genius. They saw in him little more than a stuffy old man who clung stubbornly to obsolete forms of music. Nonetheless, the 202 cantatas surviving from the 295 that he wrote in Leipzig are still played today, whereas much that was new and in vogue at the time has been forgotten. Most of the cantatas open with a section for chorus and orchestra, continue with alternating recitatives and arias for solo voices and accompaniment, and conclude with a chorale based on a simple Lutheran hymn. The music is at all times closely bound to the text, ennobling the latter immeasurably with its expressiveness and spiritual intensity. Among these works are the

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, 1710-1784, was the eldest son of J. S. and Maria
Barbara Bach. A 'man of idle and dissolute habits', he studied philosophy and
mathematics at Leipzig, but later accepted a post as organist in Sophienkirche at
Dresden. He then found a better job in Halle at the Liebfrauenkirche in 1746
where he spent 18 years. Unhappy with the job, Friedemann resigned his Halle
post in 1764, and never held a permanent job again.
Johann Christian Bach, 1735-1782, was the youngest surviving son of Bach's
twenty children. He studied with his father, his brother Karl Philipp Emanuel and
Padre Martini of Bologna. He became known as the "Milan" Bach after becoming
organist at the Milan Cathedral in 1760, and then the "London" Bach two years later. He briefly instructed and influenced young Mozart in 1764. His works include chamber works, operas, piano and church works. After his father's death, J.C. Bach turned Roman Catholic in Italy. As his music style fell out of fashion, Johann Christian also tended toward heavy drinking and he built up considerable debts. In June of 1768, one of the first known uses of a piano as a solo

Johann Sebastian Bach
His life and times The Bach Family

It was inevitable that Johann Sebastian Bach would become a musician, since he was only one of more than 70 composers and performers from the same family in Germany from the 16th to the early 19th centuries. Some other important members of the family include:
  • Johann(es) Bach (c. 1550-1626), one of the earliest professional musicians among the Bachs; traveled widely as a musician in various towns.
  • Christoph Bach (1613-1661), grandfather of J.S. Bach; a court musician in Weimar; later a town musician in other small German towns.
  • Johann Ambrosius Bach (1645-1695), the father of J.S. Bach; renowned as a violinist in his early days; later employed as a court trumpeter and music director at Eisenach.
  • Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), son of J.S. Bach, and an important composer in the galant style
  • Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784), the eldest son of J.S. Bach and his first wife; a great melodist, perhaps the most adventurous composer among Bach's sons.
