Johann Sebastian BACH:
Cantata 198: The TRAUER ODE
for the Funeral of Queen Christiane Eberhardine of Poland/Saxony.

Performed at a special Memorial Service
held in the University Paulinerkirche, Leipzig, on October 17th, 1727.
Of all Bach's great Cantatas,
the composition and performance of this Trauerode
was probably the most significant to the composer,
the performers and the citizens of Leipzig. In 1697, Friedrich August, Elector of Saxony, assumed the Polish crown, which traditionally passed not through lineage, but on selection by the Polish nobility from eligible candidates. Extensive lobbying by the Saxon Court brought Friedrich August into the Finals, his main opponent being Louis, Prince of Conti. Stories are told of a midnight race from the Polish border to Krakov, then Polish capital. Friedrich August won and claimed the Crown. Louis, so it is said, consoled himself by making off with a substantial part of the Polish Crown Jewels. In addition to the election competition there remained another challenge: the requirement that any king of Poland must be of Catholic faith. Despite the Elector's, and Saxony's solid Lutheran Protestant background, this was no problem for the opportunist Friedrich August who readily acceded, formally adopting Catholicism in Vienna on June 1st, 1697 despite a storm of protest from the strongly Protestant Saxon populace. Feelings were only slightly calmed by a formal announcement on July 27th that Protestantism in Saxony would in no way be jeopardized, as indeed it would not be. In fact the city of Dresden would be enriched by the juxtaposition of religious buildings of both faiths, often unofficially competing for prominence.

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, 1710-1784, was the eldest son of J. S. and Maria
Barbara Bach. A 'man of idle and dissolute habits', he studied philosophy and
mathematics at Leipzig, but later accepted a post as organist in Sophienkirche at
Dresden. He then found a better job in Halle at the Liebfrauenkirche in 1746
where he spent 18 years. Unhappy with the job, Friedemann resigned his Halle
post in 1764, and never held a permanent job again.
Johann Christian Bach, 1735-1782, was the youngest surviving son of Bach's
twenty children. He studied with his father, his brother Karl Philipp Emanuel and
Padre Martini of Bologna. He became known as the "Milan" Bach after becoming
organist at the Milan Cathedral in 1760, and then the "London" Bach two years later. He briefly instructed and influenced young Mozart in 1764. His works include chamber works, operas, piano and church works. After his father's death, J.C. Bach turned Roman Catholic in Italy. As his music style fell out of fashion, Johann Christian also tended toward heavy drinking and he built up considerable debts. In June of 1768, one of the first known uses of a piano as a solo

He was one of the greatest composers of all time, but during his lifetime, he was little-known and was mostly recognized for performing on the organ. Bach composed in many established musical forms, including, for example, the cantata and fugue, and developed them into complex and sublime pieces. He composed over 1,100 works in almost every musical genre (except opera). Bach was born and died in Germany, and spent his entire life there, working as an organist, teacher, and composer. He had over 20 children, including four who became famous musicians in their own right, including Carl Philipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian.

Bach wrote hundreds of pieces for organ, choir, as well as many other instruments. He spent most of his life as a church organist and a choir director. His music combines profound expression with clever musico-mathematical feats, like fugues and cannons in which the same melody is played against itself in various ways.

Bach's first music lessons were on the violin, with his father as instructor. Having a beautiful soprano voice, he ... sang in the choir at St. George's Church. On May 3, 1694, his mother died; his father remarried 6 months later but died scarcely 2 months after that. The oldest brother, Johann Christoph, assumed the care of the 10-year-old Johann Sebastian. The boy moved to Ohrdruf to live with his brother, organist at St. Michael's Church. From him Johann Sebastian received his first instruction at the harpsichord and perhaps at the organ. Source: In July 1708 Bach took Source: The fame of the Bachs Source: No doubt under the influence of Buxtehude, Bach wanted to present M¼hlhausen with what he called "well-ordered church music." He soon discovered that his pastor, Johann Frohne, was an advocate of Lutheran Pietism. Frohne preferred simplicity in both the liturgy and the music, and the former organist, Johann Georg Ahle, had followed his wishes to a large extent. The very simple musical scores in the choir library reflected this approach. Bach soon became friendly with Reverend George Eilmar, an out-spoken enemy of Pietism, who is thought to be the librettist of at least three cantatas which Bach wrote during the M¼hlhausen tenure. The brilliant setting of Cantata No. 71, Gott ist mein K¶nig (God Is My King), written for the installation service of the city council on Feb. 4, 1708, certainly must have antagonized Reverend Frohne and members of the congregation who were in the audience.
