    Biography
The second surviving son of J.S. Bach , Carl Philipp Emanuel was the most innovative and idiosyncratic member of an extremely talented musical family. His music, unlike that of his father or that of the master he influenced, Haydn , did not define an era so much as reveal a deeply personal response to the musical conventions of his time. C.P.E. Bach could play his father's technically demanding keyboard pieces at sight by the time he was seven. Also an exceptional student in areas other than music, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig in 1731 to study law, then transferred to the University of Frankfurt an der Oder. He graduated in 1734, but remained in that backwater town giving keyboard lessons, involving himself in public concerts, and learning the composer's craft. By 1740 Bach was in Berlin as harpsichordist to Frederick the Great of Prussia. Here he was first exposed to Italian opera seria, and its dramatic style infiltrated his instrumental music. Little of this was heard at court, where Bach accompanied the flutist-king in one reactionary concerto after another by

Frederick , then Crown Prince of Prussia, to serve as chamber musician at his court in Rheinsberg. After Frederick's accession to the throne in 1740, when the court moved to Berlin, Bach had frequent contact with J. J. Quantz Carl Heinrich Graun and his brother Johann Gottlieb Graun Franz Benda and his brother Georg Benda Telemann 's replacement in Hamburg. There he assumed posts as music director at five churches and as Kantor at the Johanneum; he remained in the city for the rest of his life. Nearly all of his sacred vocal music dates from these years, including the oratorios (1770), and Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu Eugene Helm's thematic catalog includes nearly 900 works; central to the oeuvre is the keyboard. More than 350 works are for solo keyboard: sonatas, fantasies, rondos, variations, fugues. Also included are nearly 100 concertos or sonatinas, about fifty chamber works with obbligato keyboard, 70 trio sonatas, twenty symphonies, about 100 solo songs, and more than 100 choral works. Bach was author of the single most important treatise of the era, 2 vols. (Berlin, 1753-62).

A Tribute to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach
by T.L. Hubeart Jr. © 1996-2002 by T.L. Hubeart Jr. I t cannot have been easy to have been a son of the great Johann Sebastian Bachor especially to undertake a career in music under the shadow of such a father. The most notable members of Sebastian’s progeny broke from their father’s influence like billiard balls escaping a neat triangular formation. Musically, they turned away from the traditions he had embodied, mainly because they knew themselves unable to surpass his outstanding achievements. In some cases, the paths of their lives also seemed to reflect rebellion against his legacy. Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-84), Sebastian’s eldest son, became a rather tragic figure, abruptly abandoning his organist’s position in Halle in 1764 and never again holding a formal post, reduced to recycling his own music and plagiarizing his father’s. Johann Christian Bach (1735-82), youngest of Sebastian’s sons, abandoned Sebastian’s Lutheran faith after the latter's death, being received into the Roman Catholic Church during his years in Italy. Although Sebastian seems to have been especially fond of Christian, treating him as "the Benjamin of the family,"

A biography of the son of JS bach, carl philipp emanuel bach.

    by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
As a German composer whose early works exemplified the grandeur of Baroque style and whose subsequent works evolved into pure Classicism, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's keyboard music offers a charming and historical look into the musical transition between two great eras of music history. Standing in the shadow of his famous father, Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach is sometimes overlooked by historians for his ground-breaking keyboard Sonatas and his significant contribution to Protestant Church music in the second half of the Eighteenth Century.
Most of his music is not as well known as that of his father, but in the second half of the Eighteenth Century, C.P.E. Bach was known as the "Great Bach." He was the second eldest and the most famous of J.S. Bach's sons. An advocate of subjectivity and individual self-expression in music, C.P.E. Bach was quickly hailed as the foremost exponent of the Sturm und Drang movement of the late Eighteenth Century. Growing out of Baroque music, the "Storm and Stress" period can be seen as a time of transition between the works of J.S. Bach, Handel, and Telemann, and those of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
C.P.E. Bach was born in Weimar, Germany on March 8, 1714 as the second surviving son of Johann Sebastian Bach and his first wife Maria Barbara. He was baptized on March 10, 1714 with Telemann as one of his godfathers. In 1717 he moved with the family to Cöthen where his father had been appointed
