She was the first Polish female composer to achieve national and international recognition. Her father, Wincenty Bacewicz (lith. Vincas Bacevičius), gave Grażyna her first piano and violin lessons. In she began studying at the Warsaw Conservatory , where she initially took violin and piano classes, and graduated in as a violinist and composer. She continued her education in Paris , having been granted a stipend by Ignacy Jan Paderewski to attend the ‰cole Normale de Musique , and studied there in 1932-33 under the guidance of Nadia Boulanger . At the same time she took private violin lessons with Henri Touret . Later she also left France in order to learn from the Hungarian violinist Carl Flesch After completing her studies, Bacewicz took part in numerous events as a soloist, composer, and jury member. Back to Top History of the Collection On 6 February 1997 these priceless manuscripts have been deposited for safe-keeping at the Special Collections Department of the University of Southern California. The participants in the deposition ceremony included Dr. Stefan P. Wilk and Mrs. Wanda Wilk, the Founders of the PMC, Director of the Special Collections Department, Dr. Virginia Steele, Dr. Maria Anna Harley (Maja Trochimczyk), and Dr. John Ahouse. During the event, the attendees (composers, musicologists, music critics, journalists from two TV stations and the radio) were welcomed by Krzysztof Knittel, president of the Polish Composers' Union, Tadeusz Wielecki, director of the Warsaw Autumn Festival (pictured speaking in the photo), Tania Chomiak-Salvi, cultural attache of the American Embassy in Warsaw, and Maja Trochimczyk (PMC Director). All the composers received small gifts from PMC - an information package about the university , the Thornton School of Music and the PMC, and flowers to express our appreciation. The newly donated manuscripts after being brought to Los Angeles, were shown to the public during an Exhibition of Manuscripts and Chamber Music Concert held on 21 October 2001. The display featured over 100 manuscripts by 33 composers who donated their music to the Polish Music Center.

Januar in Warschau ) war eine polnische Komponistin Bacewicz erhielt ihre erste Ausbildung im Klavier- und Violinspiel und Komposition bei ihrem Vater. Sie trat bereits als Kind auf und komponierte ihr erstes Werk im Alter von dreizehn Jahren. 1928 begann sie an der Universit¤t Warschau ein Philosophiestudium. Am Konservatorium studierte sie Komposition bei Kazimierz Sikorski , Violine bei J³zef Jarzębski und Klavier bei Jan Turczyński . Seit Anfang der 1930er Jahre studierte sie in Paris Komposition bei Nadia Boulanger und Violine bei Andr© Touret und Carl Flesch . Von 1934 bis 1935 und nach 1945 unterrichtete sie am Konservatorium in Ł³dź, danach lebte sie in Warschau. Bis 1955 wirkte sie neben ihrer kompositorischen T¤tigkeit als Violinistin, seit 1963 unterrichtete sie auch am Warschauer Konservatorium. Daneben war sie auch als Schriftstellerin erfolgreich, in Polen erschienen mehrere ihrer Erz¤hlungen und Romane. Zu ihren Sch¼ler z¤hlte Piotr Moss Bacewicz komponierte eine Funkoper ( Przygoda Kr³la Artura , 1959), drei Ballette, sechs Sinfonien und weitere Orchesterwerke, mehrere Instrumentalkonzerte, zahlreiche Kammermusikwerke, eine Kantate und Lieder.
