SIR MALCOLM ARNOLD AND HIS NINE SYMPHONIES Surely the most underrated contemporary composer is Sir Malcolm Arnold (b. Oct. 21, 1921), at least in regard to his major symphonic works. His versatility is extraordinary. He has written music for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, numerous concertos for a multitude of friends (guitarist Julian Bream, trumpeter John Wilbraham, violinist Yehudi Menuhin, cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber, recorder virtuoso Michaela Petri, harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler, oboist Leon Goossens, et al). Arnold also wrote music for more than 80 films, including The Bridge on the River Kwai, Whistle Down the Wind, Hobson's Choice, and Inn of the Sixth Happiness (he was approached to write the score for Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey , an offer he declined). However, to me his greatest achievement is a series of nine extraordinary symphonies. Sir Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton. His father was a well-to-do shoe manufacturer, amateur pianist and organist, his mother a fine pianist. They encouraged his musical interests which were wide-ranging. He absorbed the classics as well as jazz, and studied the trumpet, which he quickly mastered. Working with Ernest Hall, a leading teacher of the instrument, he became a wunderkind , in demand by all London orchestras. He selected the London Philharmonic and soon became principal trumpet; it was at that time his interest in composition developed. When he showed his comedy overture

Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006) - great British drama and humour:
Malcolm Arnold was born into a musical family and learned piano and violin as a boy. He left his Northampton home at the age of 16 on a scholarship to study composition at London's Royal College of Music, before joining the London Philharmonic Orchestra as a trumpet player at 19 and later becoming their Principal Trumpet. William Lloyd Webber (father of Andrew Academy Award but his contribution to the British film industry extends far beyond this. Mahler and Shostakovich Arnold's work for the screen included a number of documentary films and, as might be expected, there were quite a number of films with a military theme in the decade following World War Two. With this necessary patriotism and his country's musical figures of Elgar and Walton, his music sounds quite British though decidedly more eccentric than those other composers. Like Maurice Jarre he also formed a fruitful relationship with director David Lean, which resulted in "Hobson's Choice", "The Sound Barrier" and the previously-mentioned "Bridge on the River Kwai". The lighter side of Arnold's music is in evidence with the "St. Trinians" series of films, with several recurring tunes full of wit and humour. The main theme hints at school assembly with its piano played by four hands, and there is another deliciously shady theme for the spiv character played by George Cole. With a wealth to choose from it is difficult to single out particular films, but "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" and "Whistle Down the Wind" spring to mind as engrossing cinematic story-telling in which music seems to be an integral part. "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" has a memorable theme tune which becomes synonymous with the caring determination of Ingrid Bergmann's missionary character, and the children are taught to sing "This Old Man". The music carries the concerned hope of the movie as those same traits are displayed on the gruelling journey over the mountains (Snowdonia in Wales substituting for the hills of China). Malcolm Arnold also had a part to play in the music for "The Battle of Britain". While

      • UK Monday, 25 September 2006 Malcolm Henry Arnold, composer and trumpeter: born Northampton 21 October 1921; Principal Trumpet, London Philharmonic Orchestra 1941-44, 1945-48; CBE 1970; Kt 1993; married 1941 Sheila Nicholson (one son, one daughter, and one daughter deceased; marriage dissolved 1962), 1963 Isobel Grey (one son; marriage dissolved 1975); died Norwich 23 September 2006. The death of Malcolm Arnold will strike sadness into the hearts of musicians everywhere, and of wind-players in particular. There can scarcely be a single one who has not encountered at some time or another that quintessential Arnold work, his Three Shanties, and rejoiced over it. Charming, melodious, graceful, witty; cheeky, even. But it takes skill, hard work, a fine ear and lots of practice to write pieces even as innocent-sounding as these shanties - and they date from the very earliest years of his long composing career.

SIR MALCOLM ARNOLD (1921-2006)
The London Philharmonic Orchestra was saddened to hear of the death of one of its most prominent players from the early days who went on to become one of Britain's most notable and versatile composers.
In his memory, we include below an article by Anthony Meredith and Paul Harris, authors of the biography, Malcolm Arnold: Rogue Genius , which describes Sir Malcolm's long and varied association with the Orchestra.

A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP:
Sir Malcolm Arnold and the London Philharmonic Orchestra
Malcolm Arnold experienced many important early influences. He gained much from his highly musical mother, who first taught him the piano, and his sister, who encouraged his interest in jazz. At the Royal College of Music he was inspired by Ernest Hall, his trumpet professor, Gordon Jacob, his composition tutor, and the bohemian Constant Lambert, who influenced more than just his musical tastes. But most significant of all was his membership of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom as a young man he played in well over a thousand concerts.

Malcolm Arnold was born in 1921 in Northampton, where his father was a well-to-do shoe manufacturer. There was music in the family, both from his father and from his mother, a descendant of a former Master of the Chapel Royal. Instead of the usual period at a public school, he was educated privately at home. As a twelve-year-old he found a new interest in the trumpet and in jazz after hearing Louis Armstrong, and three years later he was able to study the instrument in London under Ernest Hall, subsequently winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where his composition teacher was Gordon Jacob. Two years later he left the College to join the London Philharmonic Orchestra as second trumpet. Meanwhile he had won a composition prize for a one-movement string quartet. It was as an orchestral player that he was able to explore the wider orchestral repertoire, in particular the symphonies of Mahler. Early in the 1939-45 war Arnold was a conscientious objector, in common with a number of other leading musicians. He was allowed to continue his work as an orchestral player, taking the position of first trumpet in the London Philharmonic in 1943. In the same year, however, he volunteered for military service, but was discharged after shooting himself in the foot, playing, thereafter, second trumpet to his teacher Ernest Hall in the BBC Symphony Orchestra and then rejoining the London Philharmonic, where he served as principal trumpet until 1948. During these years he had continued to work as a composer, with a series of successful orchestral compositions, as well as a variety of chamber music.

With the exception of Shostakovich he is the only major composer to have written a huge body of film music. In the end there is just music - good or bad."
