His father was postmaster and a J.P. in the little mining village of Corris Machylleth. ApIvor's grandfather on his mother's side was a land-agent to Lord Boston in Llangtefni, the Anglesey county town; and his grandmother was connected, way back to the 16th century, with an East-Anglian family called Sculthorpe; and her brother, Canon James Sculthorpe Lewis of St Asaph, had been educated at Christ Church, Oxford.

Yerma 1956-1960) after Lorca (with libretto by Montagu Slater) and a cantata Thamar and Amnon (op. 25, 1954 and performed by Sir E. Goossens and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra). Denis ApIvor has even translated the complete poetry of Lorca into English. In all of these compositions, Dr ApIvor evokes a Spanish atmosphere with a remarkably sure hand and without ever degenerating into pastiche. The 1960s ushered in a period of experimentation and development along the lines of serial technique. There had been works built on serial principles such as the Piano Pieces op. 14 which are imaginative and effective. Continuous development and non-thematic process characterise the compositions of the middle period. The largest piano work is The Lyre Playing Idol op. 45, (1968) inspired by a small figurine of an ancient god. Denis ApIvor imagined the god summoning up the dawn, the wind, the rain, the thunder, and the night in movements of vivid magical gesture. (Although about 20 minutes long a recent performance was a great success even for an audience unprepared to appreciate serial music.) The Violoncello Concerto, op. 64 (1976-7) which was performed by the Welsh BBC Orchestra with Raphael Wallfisch as soloist is a powerful and striking work, and which reveals another aspect of Dr ApIvor's compositional skill: his brilliant and vigorous orchestration. There are numerous major works for orchestra from this period as well.

Denis ApIvor and his contribution to British opera and ballet
Musical Times Summer 2005 by Marrington, Mark Denis ApIvor died in Robertsbridge., East Sussex, on 27 May 2004, aged 88. My objective here is not to offer a full appreciation of his achievement but to provide some insight into his contribution to British opera and ballet between 1947 and 1966, with especial regard to his operas Yerma and Ubu Roi. DENIS ApIvoR was born near Dublin in 1916, of what may be most appropriately described as Anglicised Welsh parentage. He spent the first 17 years of his life in a state of national flux, residing for various lengths of time in Caernarfon North Wales, Oxford, Hereford and Aberystwyth before finally settling in London in 1934. Such displacement may go some way towards explaining the apparent chameleon-like musical personality of the composer, and in particular his refusal to be tied in stylistic terms to either a Welsh or English outlook. Indeed, a thorough acquaintance with Aplvor's output reveals that, if anything, there is a consistent leaning towards developments on the European mainland, rather than in Britain.
