George Antheil George Antheil: Bad Boy of Music-An Intermission Feature in Two Parts (November 7, 1980)
This audio is available in streaming format Charles Amirkhanian introduces the amazing music of Trenton-born George Antheil (1900-1959). Antheil (pronounced "ANT-hile") was the first avant-garde American composer to be recognized in Europe and composed the Ballet M©canique in the mid-Twenties for multiple player pianos and percussion. His life was documented in his 1945 autobiography Bad Boy of Music, still in print in English and German (see http://www.otherminds.org/cgi-bin/shop.cgi/page=index7.html) to locate copies. This program was produced as an intermission feature for a live San Francisco Symphony "New and Unusual Music" series broadcast on November 7, 1980. Comments by the composer himself plus Antheil's theme music for Walter Cronkite's CBS TV series "The Twentieth Century" are included. (Antheil died prematurely at the age of 58 in NYC while working feverishly on the popular weekly series.)

George Carl Johann Antheil was born on 8 July 1900 in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of William and Wihelmine Antheil, owners of a small shoe store. Antheil began his composition studies at the age of sixteen with Constain von Sternberg, a pupil of Liszt, and later with Ernest Bloch. Studies with Bloch ended prematurely in 1921 when a lack of money sent young Antheil to Philadelphia in search of a patron. He was directed to Mrs Edward Bok, who in 1924 would found the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Having found a patron, he began to formulate his plan to tour Europe as a concert pianist and composer. enfant terrible du jour . Notorious for its orchestra of pianos, percussion, electric buzzers and airplane propellers, with Ballet he had reached the end of an important period in his musical development. The Piano Concerto left him financially and emotionally bankrupt. The deliberately sensationalist and provocative promotion that preceded the concert alienated his audience and marred his reputation in America well into the 1940s. Antheil returned briefly to Europe, where he began work on his opera

Older News: Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil honored by Micro Times Magazine as 'Top 100' award winners and by the Electronic Frontier Foundation with the Pioneer Award Patent Index
George Antheil by Man Ray Many years ago , on the eve of World War II, a well-known actress of the day and a avant-garde American composer, while at a dinner party, thought up an interesting scheme to control armed torpedoes over long distances without the enemy detecting them or jamming their transmissions. While they had the foresight to patent their invention, the term of the patent lapsed without either of them realizing any money from their invention, which formed the basis of what was to later become spread-spectrum communications. This invention becomes even more incredible when you consider that it came before the invention of digital electronics.. however, it makes very substantial use of several key digital concepts. Yes, the term "ahead of it's time" would apply here, because over 50 years later, as high-speed microprocessors become inexpensive, spread-spectrum communications- Hedy ' Lamarr ' and my father, George Antheils ' ' secret communications system ' - adapted to use today's ultrafast microprocessors- is coming into it's own as a effective and inexpensive way to communicate over long distances, privately and efficiently. Spread-spectrum forms the basic principle that enables the simultaneous multi-channel operation of modern digital cellular telephony.
