Gregorio Allegri
A member of the same family which produced the painter Correggio, born at Rome c. 1580; died 1652. He was attached to the cathedral at Fermo , as a beneficiary priest , and acted as chorister and composer. The attention of Pope Urban VIII was drawn to him through some of his motets and concerti , and he was appointed, 6 December, 1629, to fill a vacancy among the singers of the Papal Choir , a post which he held until his death. He reached the climax of his fame when he produced his nine-voiced "Miserere" for two choirs, the value of which depends almost entirely upon its execution, in particular upon certain traditional ornaments which give a peculiar, pathetic quality to many passages, but without which it appears to be a piece of almost hopeless insipidity. Allegri's Christian life was in perfect harmony with his artistic occupation; he was, says Proske , "a model of priestly piety and humility , a father to the poor , the consoler of captives and the forsaken, a self-sacrificing help and rescuer of suffering humanity ." His published works consist chiefly of two volumes of "Concertini" (1618-19), and two of "motetti" (1621) all printed by Soldi of

B ... Z GREGORIO ALLEGRI (1582 - 1652)Gregorio Allegri was born around 1582 in Rome. The earliest record we have of his career is that he joined the choir school at S. Luigi dei Francesi in Rome in 1591. He stayed there until 1596, when his soprano voice broke. We next hear of him on his return to S. Luigi in 1600 when he rejoined the choir as a contralto and began his musical studies with the maestro di cappella at S. Luigi, Giovanni Bernardino Nanino. About 1607 he left Rome to take up a post as singer and composer at the cathedral in Fermo at the outskirts of the papal state. He apparently stayed there until 1628, when he returned to Rome to take the competitive examination for admittance to the papal choir. He successfully completed the exam and became a part of the choir in 1629. In addition to the prestige of belonging to this organization, and the attendant guaranteed salary for life, Allegri enjoyed the opportunity to study and consult with some of the finest musical minds of his time. During the next 23 years until his death on February 7, 1652, Allegri composed a number of masses, motets, and a small number of instrumental works, including a four-part sonata for string ensemble that might be considered an important early string quartet, written as it was over a century before Haydn's first efforts in the form.

In a career largely centred on Rome, Allegri provided music for the papal choir. Church Music Allegri's most famous work is his setting of the Miserere for five-part choir, with a second four-part choir of soloists. The work was kept secret, but the 14-year-old Mozart wrote it out from memory, after he had heard it sung in Holy Week in the Sistine Chapel in 1770.

by John Weeks Moore Allegri di bravura Allegri, Gregorio , born at Rome, of the family of Correggio, was received in 1629 at the pope's chapel as a singer and composer. He was a pupil of Nanini. His celebrated " Miserere " is still sung in the papal chapel during passion Week, and is forbidden to be copied on pain of excommunication. It is well known that Mozart, having heared it performed twice, retained the score so strongly in his memory, that he wrote it down in almost perfect conformity to the original manuscript. The " Miserere Cantores pontificii Ne quos vivos Concors melodia junxit, Mortuos corporis discors resolutio dissolveret, Hic una condi voluere. The pontifical singers, Anxious that those Whom harmony united in life Should not be separated in death, Wished this as their burial-place. Miserere Miserere ." Andrea Adami, in a work of his, mentions that "after several vain attempts, by preceding composers, for more than a hundred years, to set the same words to the satisfaction of the heads of the church, Gregorio Allegri succeeded so well as to merit eternal praise; for with few notes, well modulated, and well understood, he composed such as "
