John Adams
Born:
John Adams is one of the best known and most often performed of America's composers. As Andrew Porter wrote in The New Yorker , Adams is the creator of a "flexible new language capable of producing large-scale works that are both attractive and strongly fashioned. His is a music whose highly polished resonant sound is wonderful." Le Monde says that his music "...gives the impression of a rediscovered liberty, of an open door which lets in the fresh air in great gusts."
Adams was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on 15 February 1947. During his youth, growing up in Vermont and New Hampshire, he was strongly influenced by the intellectual and cultural institutions of New England. He received both his BA and MA degrees from Harvard University, where he was active as a conductor, clarinetist, and composer. His principal teachers included Leon Kirchner, David Del Tredici, and Roger Sessions.
In 1971 Adams began an active career in the San Francisco area, teaching at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1972-83) and serving as new music adviser and composer-in-residence for the San Francisco Symphony (1978-85). His creative output spans a wide range of media: works for orchestra, opera, video, film, and dance, as well as electronic and instrumental music. Such pieces as

I always consider the settlement of America with reverence and wonder, as the opening of a grand scene and design in providence, for the illumination of the ignorant and the emancipation of the slavish part of mankind all over the earth.

I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain.

In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress.

Second President of the United States (1797-1801)
The question before the human race is, whether the God of nature shall govern the world by his own laws, or whether priests and kings shall rule it by fictitious miracles?
John Adams , letter to Thomas Jefferson, June 20, 1815 The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature; and if men are now sufficiently enlightened to disabuse themselves of artifice, imposture, hypocrisy, and superstition, they will consider this event as an era in their history. Although the detail of the formation of the American governments is at present little known or regarded either in Europe or in America, it may hereafter become an object of curiosity. It will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of Heaven, more than those at work upon ships or houses, or laboring in merchandise or agriculture; it will forever be acknowledged that these governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses.
John Adams , "A Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America" (1787-88), from Adrienne Koch, ed.

New Year Is Time to Reflect on Real Estate Q: We moved this year, and used the same agent for both the sale of our old home and the purchase of our new home. We had some problems with the builder along the way, and really feel that our agent went the extra mile to make sure we got everything we had been promised, even long after the closing. I know she got paid a commission on both sales, and we have expressed our appreciation in person, but we just wondered if it would be appropriate to say "thank you" in a more tangible way. Any suggestions? A: When a real estate salesperson agrees to help you sell or buy a home, you have a right to expect honest and hard-working professional service from that person at every stage of the sales process, and beyond. It sounds to me like you got that, and perhaps a little more.

ADAMS, JOHN BIOGRAPHY
(b 1947 )
A pupil of Leon Kirchner, David Del Tredici and Roger Sessions at Harvard, John Adams moved to California, where he has made a name for himself in more original forms. In the 1970s he turned to minimalism, to which he gave an individual shape, as he developed his own distinctive musical language. Stage Works The opera 1982 Nixon in China , a collaboration with the theatre director Peter Sellars and the poet Alice Goodman, inspired by President Nixons visit toChina in 1972, has found a place in current repertoire. This was followed by a further collaboration, The Death of Klinghoffer , first staged in 1991, and based on the murder of an elderly American by terrorists who had seized a Mediterranean cruise-liner. Other stage works include I was looking at the Ceiling and then I saw the Sky , completed in 1996, and the nativity oratorio El Nio Orchestral Music Shaker Loops , for string orchestra, dates from the mid-1970s and seeks inspiration from the religious ecstasy of Shaker ceremonies. The brief
