Philosophy of Chemistry by Eric Scerri When I push my hand down onto my desk it does not generally pass through the wooden surface. Why not? From the perspective of physics perhaps it ought to, since we are told that the atoms that make up all materials consist mostly of empty space. Here is a similar question that is put in a more sophisticated fashion. In modern physics any body is described as a superposition of many wavefunctions, all of which stretch out to infinity in principle. How is it then that the person I am talking to across my desk appears to be located in one particular place? The general answer to both such questions is that although the physics of microscopic objects essentially governs all of matter, one must also appeal to the laws of chemistry, material science, biology, and other sciences. Chemistry for example, may be essentially governed by the laws of quantum mechanics, but in order to study the nature and transformation of matter at the appropriate chemical level, one needs to appeal to laws of science other than just quantum mechanics. This realization that chemistry is not fully "reduced" to quantum mechanics has been one of the main motivations for the recent resurgence in the philosophy of chemistry.

The Philosophy of Computational Quantum Chemistry
From Dr. Buyong Ma , Ph.D Dissertation of University of Georgia, March, 1995
The advances of computational approach to chemical problems are remarkable. It has been gradually clear that computer may be the instruments of new experimental methodology, i.e., computer experiment, which means that computer together with appropriate software form a fundamental extension of our means to obtain experimental information[1,2]. The philosophical significance of such scientific practice, especially computational quantum chemistry, remains to be evaluated and appreciated. A careful examination of the newly advanced scientific discipline may enrich our understanding about some problems of philosophy of science, for instance, the relationship between theory and observation and cognitive models of science. Vise verse, a philosophical consideration of computational quantum chemistry might help us get fully appreciation about computational quantum chemistry. I. The theoretical nature of computational quantum Chemistry

Abstract
What could possibly be the connection between chemistry
and philosophy, apart from the obvious superficial one
of their both representing quests for knowledge? How do
contemporary chemists and philosophers generally view one
another? These are some of the questions I will try to put
before going on to describe the connections that have recently
been forged between these two seemingly very diverse fields
of academic study.. Keywords: Chemistry, Chemical Education, Philosophy of Special Sciences Subjects: Specific Sciences Chemistry ID Code: Deposited By: Weisberg, Michael Deposited On: 01 May 2001

A plethora of undesired environmental, social and political side effects and consequences of the explosive development of chemistry in the last fifty years kicked off an even increasing discussion on the ethical limits of chemical enterprise and on the responsibility of the chemists for the taming of the forces they have freed from their retorts. The importance of philosophy of chemistry for a fruitful discourse on these topics is easily illustrated on following example:

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY Admission • Two letters of recommendation, including at least one from a faculty member in the major department, are required. Undergraduate Requirements • Although the majority of the students admitted to the program have degrees in pharmacy and/or chemistry, there is no specific undergraduate degree required for admission. Undergraduate requirements that may need to be satisfied during graduate study (or can be completed prior to graduate study), depending on the student's selected research problem and area of interest, can include biochemistry, instrumental analysis, pharmacology, and physical chemistry. Organic Chemistry Placement Test • Entering students are required to take an orientation examination in organic chemistry. Performance on this examination will determine if the student must enroll in Intermediate Organic Chemistry (CHEM 524) prior to taking advanced Organic Chemistry (CHEM 527 and 528). The department highly recommends that incoming students study for this placement exam prior to entering the program. Graduate Course Requirements • Medicinal chemistry is a multidisciplinary chemistry-centered science involved in applying both chemical and biological principles to a study of chemical substances capable of exerting specific effects on a biological system. In practice, the medicinal chemist is involved in designing, synthesizing and characterizing medicinal agents intended for the management and/or therapy of disease states. The graduate course requirements for a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry consists of a minimum of 13 graduate course hours in medicinal chemistry, 12 hours of chemistry courses, and 6 hours in a minor emphasis area. These requirements can be satisfied in the following way:

The Department of Chemistry offers a program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Chemistry. The Ph.D. degree is offered in biochemistry, organic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, and analytical chemistry. A bioinformatics option is available in each of the four core disciplines. At least 80 hours of graduate credit are required for the Ph.D. degree. In order to satisfy the minimum requirements for the degree, students must complete successfully:
Foreign Language/Research Skill Requirement: A reading proficiency in one foreign language or an equivalent research skill - e.g., computer language, technical writing, advanced statistics, electronics, etc. - (departmental approval necessary) is required. Students with M.S. degrees have already satisfied the language requirement. Credit hours used to fulfill this requirement do not count in the 80 hours. Thirty hours of approved graduate core coursework.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences : Health and Environmental Chemistry Note that this document is not binding - students who have questions should consult with their adviser or refer to the official printed undergraduate / graduate catalog. Coordinator: Kathleen Healy Moore The health and environmental chemistry specialization of the biomedical sciences doctoral program requires a strong academic background in the physical sciences. Graduates will have completed a unified program of formal course work as well as independent research. Graduates will possess the theoretical background and practical skills necessary for successful comtribution to the solution of environmental and health-related chemical problems. Scientists who graduate with this specialization will be capable of applying state-of-the-art methods to the detection, quantification, and management of a wide variety of naturally occurring and synthetic chemical substances and the related chemical processes. No other doctoral program in Michigan focuses on these particular areas of chemistry, yet the contribution of highly trained doctoral-level scientists is essential to the resolution of major problems facing the nation in these areas. Admission Students will be considered for admission if they hold baccalaureates or master degrees in the natural sciences (chemistry, biology, or physics), interdisciplinary sciences (biochemistry, pharmacology), or other areas relevant to the health and environmental specialization. Admission is selective; students should submit a graduate application, official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended, three letters of recommendation for graduate study, and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results. Students should take the general GRE and a subject GRE relevant to their area of expertise. International applicants may have additional requirements; please consult the Office of Graduate Study.

Description
About the Author DESCRIPTION (back to top) How did chemistry and physics acquire their separate identities, and are they on their way to losing them again? Mary Jo Nye has written a graceful account of the historical demarcation of chemistry from physics and subsequent reconvergences of the two, from Lavoisier and Dalton in the late eighteenth century to Robinson, Ingold, and Pauling in the mid-twentieth century. Using the notion of a disciplinary "identity" analogous to ethnic or national identity, Nye develops a theory of the nature of disciplinary structure and change. She discusses the distinctive character of chemical language and theories and the role of national styles and traditions in building a scientific discipline. Anyone interested in the history of scientific thought will enjoy pondering with her the question of whether chemists of the mid-twentieth century suspected chemical explanation had been reduced to physical laws, just as Newtonian mechanical philosophers had envisioned in the eighteenth century. ABOUT THE AUTHOR (back to top) Mary Jo Nye is George Lynn Cross Research Professor of the History of Science at the University of Oklahoma and author of
