    A brief history of MDMA
MDMA [3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine: ' Ecstasy '] was first synthesized in 1912 by the German pharmaceutical company Merck . MDMA was patented in Darmstadt, Germany on May 16th 1914, issue number 274,350; and promptly forgotten. Merck's researchers had no idea of the significance of what they had done. Merck were searching for a good vasoconstrictor, a styptic to reduce bleeding. In 1912 two of their chemists, G. Mannish and W. Jacobsohn, created MDMA as a by-product while attempting to synthesise hydrastinin. MDMA is listed on Merck's patent-application merely as a chemical intermediate "for products of potential pharmaceutical value". MDMA surfaced again briefly as one of a number of agents used in clandestine US military research during the 1950s. The

W elcome to the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center which is located in Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Our pharmacology department has established and maintained a position as one of the most recognized and well-respected pharmacology departments world-wide. The UCHSC Department of Pharmacology has been ranked number one in NIH funding; it has been rated within the top five pharmacology departments in terms of scientific impact by the Institute for Scientific Information, and it has one of the top-rated Pharmacology Graduate Training Programs in the Nation. Continued.....
The graduate program offers a multidisciplinary approach to training in cellular and molecular pharmacology, signal transduction, neuropharmacology, biochemistry, and molecular structure, as well as opportunities in the blossoming field of bioinformatics. The graduate program also provides the opportunity for hands-on training in a variety of state-of-the-art laboratory techniques, including transgenics, gene chip arrays NMR mass spectrometry computational pharmacology , and x-ray crystallography . The mission of the UCHSC Department of Pharmacology is to provide individuals a broad and solid foundation of the principles of pharmacology, and to train them to become critical thinkers who can generate experimentally testable hypotheses, and who draw significant conclusions from the results of their ongoing research . Upon completion of their PhD degree in Pharmacology, our students will be prepared to make important contributions to scientific research and to the education of future generations of pharmacologists and medical, dental, and graduate students. Ph.D. Degree Programs
The graduate programs at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry have been restructured to form the Graduate Education in the Biomedical Sciences (GEBS) program. There are ten graduate clusters in GEBS, and the cluster most associated with the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology is the Cellular and Molecular Basis of Medicine. The clusters are responsible for recruiting prospective students and for mentoring them during their first year of study. First-year graduate students take core courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and ethics along with elective courses and complete three research rotations, but are not required to declare a major subject. At the end of their first year, students select a major subject and a thesis advisor.
Graduate Program in Pharmacology and Physiology
The objective of the graduate program in Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of Rochester is to train scientists in molecular and integrative pharmacology and physiology who are well prepared for careers in independent research and teaching. The program offers Ph.D. degrees in both pharmacology and physiology and includes courses in basic and advanced biomedical sciences, pharmacology, and physiology; original laboratory research; and the preparation and defense of a doctoral thesis.
