Name: Abba Gumel Birthplace: Jigawa State, Nigeria. Ph.D. Computational Mathematics, Brunel University, England. 1993.
area: parallel and sequential algorithms for parabolic partial differential equations Full Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Manitoba, Canada. Research Interests: Scientific Computing, Mathematical Biology, Dynamical Systems, Modelling, Numerical Analysis. Email: gumelab@cc.umanitoba.ca Gumel: Born in Nigeria, received his Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics from Brunel University in England and is now a tenured Associate Professror at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He has been making significant contributions in many areas of Applied Mathematics including: (1) Mathematical Biology: designing and qualitatively analysing mathematical models for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, aimed at assessing and determining optimal control strategies for an epidemic. (2) Non-linear Dynamical Systems: Designining and using Dynamical Systems theories and tools to investigate the asymptotic dynamical behaviour of some real-life systems which are formulated in the form of deterministic, non-linear, ordinary differential equation systems. (3) Computational Mathematics: Gumel's earlier work on Computational Mathematics was based on the design of efficient L_0-stable methods, via the use of the method of lines semi-discretization approach, for solving multi-dimensional partial differential equations. Gumel's main contribution in this area includes the design of a new family of L_0-stable methods which enable the solution of second-order linear parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations with or without time-dependent source terms to be computed on a parallel architecture, with each processor solving a linear algebraic system at every time step using real arithmetic (as against the computationally-expensive complex arithmetic which is often required in the process).

Mathematical crystallography is that branch of crystallography that forms the bridge to mathematics by making available mathematical concepts, methods and ideas for the solution of crystallographic problems. This also includes the development of geometrical models for the description and classification of crystal structures. Occasionally, however, mathematical crystallography can conversely also contribute to the solution of mathematical problems by applying crystallographic methods. Significant contributions in this field have emanated and still continue to emanate from German scientists - also at Marburg.

3-periodic minimal surfaces
In 1983 a relationship between some crystal structures and certain complicated periodic surfaces was first established by St. Andersson - and shortly after that also by others. These papers stimulated studies of those symmetry conditions required of a 3-periodic surface free of self-intersections in order to partition 3-dimensional space into two congruent parts. The results of these studies have especially been applied to minimal surfaces, i.e. to surfaces formed in each disc-like section like a soap film in a wire frame. With the aid of these symmetry conditions it was possible to derive several new minimal surfaces and to almost treble the number of such surfaces known at that time. In the meantime 3-periodic minimal surfaces intersecting themselves exclusively along straight lines have also been considered. Whereas previously this property was recognised only for one surface since then 77 new types of such surfaces have been derived.

Welcome! Mathematical modeling is a key technology in modern research. It is widely used by specialists in numerous fields to investigate the behavior of real systems and describe the underlying physical nature of the processes by means of mathematics. As a result, mathematical modeling makes it much easier to investigate a system using modern computer tools to perform computer simulation. Such an approach is the most cost effective tool for obtaining new information about complex natural and social systems and modern technology.
Mathematical modeling in physics, chemistry, engineering, economics, finance, biology, medicine and pharmacology, for example provides, researchers with a unique method of investigating various objects or systems.
Another interesting aspect is that systems of different scientific areas can be very similar from a mathematical point of view. Therefore, results obtained in one specific field can be very important in other scientific areas because of their interdisciplinary character. Results may not only contribute to the applied area, but they also have their own value of enabling researchers to grasp the behavior of real objects or systems and make correct decisions and predictions in order to more deeply understand the puzzles of nature.

    Project 1389
Graph theory and mathematical programming with applications in chemistry and transportation
    Leader: Dragoš Cvetkoviæ
    Abstract
    Subject of research
The subject of this research are selected topics in graph theory and mathematical programming and some of their interactions. Graph theory is listed in priority topics of Discrete Mathematics and mathematical programming belongs to priority topics of Numerical Mathematics (OR and Optimization). Important part of the research will be devoted to the theory of graph spectra and to linear and nonlinear programming. The unifying discipline is combinatorial optimization where attention will be paid to interactions of graph spectra and semidefinite programming. Significant part of the research will be devoted to applications of graph theory in mathematical chemistry and transportation.
    Description of the work
Investigations in the field of the theory of graph spectra will include the following topics: graphs with least eigenvalue –2; integral graphs; study of eigenspaces of graphs, especially graph angles; the star complement technique; hereditary graph properties; graph invariants that can be used as structure descriptors (in chemistry and elsewhere); a study of the energy of a graph and other spectrally based invariants; investigations in graph theory related to previous but from the point of view of Laplacian spectrum and distances in graphs; spectral properties of fullerenes. The planned investigations are natural extension of successful research and international cooperation in the past. It is expected that positive trends will be continued, such as publishing monographs by international scientific publishers, organizing international conferences, giving invited lectures at international conferences, study visits abroad and other activities, in a good deal financed by foreign partners.
