Definition of Discipline Activities: Environmental Chemistry
The environmental chemistry discipline encompasses a number of related fields of chemistry and is complimentary to other disciplines offered by ELA such as environmental geology hydrogeology mining and remediation toxicology risk assessment microbiology and bioremediation, and environmental and metallurgical engineering . This discipline also is involved in corrosion studies and related failure analysis and in health and safety -related issues.
Environmental chemistry is essentially the science of identifying and measuring the amount of chemicals species in the environment, natural or manmade. It also includes the study of the fate and effects of these chemicals species in the environment. It includes such tasks as defining the intended use of analytical data, preparing sampling plans to satisfy the intended use, selecting appropriate analytical methods, advising on the collection of samples in the field, interpreting laboratory analytical results, and assuring the validity and legal defensibility of analytical results.
In determining fate and effects, it often involves an evaluation or organic and inorganic chemical reactions as well as physical processes such as volatilization, cosolvency effects, and soil adsorption. As such, it is a key ingredient in all other disciplines offered by ELA, such as hydrogeology, remediation, toxicology, risk assessment, bioremediation, corrosion studies and materials failure analysis, and in industrial health and safety-related issues. The broad area of environmental chemistry encompasses a number of related fields, including: analytical chemistry, chemical

PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will:
  • use the pH scale to classify a variety of substances
  • identify chemical reactions that are important in the environment
  • assess the impact of chemical pollution on a local environment
  • collect, analyze, and interpret data on environmental quality
SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
Context Some chemical changes occur naturally in the environment. Others may be produced from the human use of products and processes that result in pollution, environmental destruction, and ultimately may involve some level of risk to human health or to the survival of other organisms. By exploring fertilizers, pesticides, acid rain, the nitrogen cycle, the carbon cycle, the water cycle, and other types of chemical reactions in the local environment, students begin to distinguish between those chemical reactions that are beneficial and those that are harmful. Through collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data on environmental quality, students begin to assess the impact of chemical pollution on the local environment and suggest ways of solving these problems. Activities
  • Students use pH paper and various other pH indicators to determine the pH of a variety of substances. Students can then make their own pH indicators (e.g., red cabbage water) and compare their accuracy to commercially used pH indicators.
