Aims and Scope: Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry is devoted to, environmental chemistry, biochemical toxicology and ecotoxicology of xenochemicals and natural toxins. The journal is interdisciplinary in outlook, and manuscripts published in it cover all relevant areas: inorganic chemistry trace elements in food and the environment, complexes and metal chelates; organic chemistry - environmental fate, chemical reactions, metabolites and degradation products, synthesis of standards and labelled materials; physical chemistry photochemistry, radiochemistry; environmental chemistry - sources, fate, and sinks of xenochemicals, environmental partitioning and transport, degradation and deposition; analytical chemistry development and optimisation of analytical methods, instrumental improvements, miniaturisation and automation; biological chemistry pharmacology and toxicology, uptake, metabolism, disposition of xenochemicals, structure-activity relationships, modes of action, ecotoxicological testing, risk assessment, and risk management. Contributions to the journal include mainly original research manuscripts; reviews submitted or invited from experts in government, industry and universities are also published. The xenochemicals considered are organic and inorganic air, water and soil pollutants, industrial pollutants, pesticides, food additives, drugs, natural toxins, radioactive materials, genotoxic compounds and persistent and/or bioaccumulative pollutants and trace chemicals (POP's, PBTs e.g.).

Recent Chemistry of Autumn Leaf Color Why do leaf colors change in the fall? What causes the different colors? It's mostly a matter of photochemistry rather than of temperature. Find out more! Chemistry of Hard and Soft Water Do you have hard water or soft water? Both? Do you know why? Get the definitions for hard and soft water, learn about their chemistry, and examine the pros and cons of each type of water. Flame Retardant People Learn about the health effects of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), a common flame retardant, and efforts to ban further use of certain forms of the chemical. How To Remove Fluoride from Drinking Water This is a list of methods that can be used to remove fluoride from drinking water. There's also a list of methods that do not remove fluoride and suggestions for ways to minimize fluoride exposure. References for the fluoridation controversy are included.

Environmental Chemistry Glossary of Important Terms
Ecology
The study of environmental factors that affect organisms and how organisms interact with these factors and with each other.
Atmosphere
Biosphere
Composed of all living entities on Earth.
Geosphere
Consists of the solid earth, including soil, which supports most plant life.
Lithosphere
The part of the geosphere that is directly involved with environmental processes through contact with the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, and living things. Varies from 50 to 100 km in thickness. Consists of outer mantle and crust.
Hydrosphere
Environmental Chemistry
The study of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in water, soil, and air environments and the effects of technology thereon.
Ecosystem
Consists of an assembly of mutually interacting organisms and their environment in which materials are interchanged in a largely cyclical manner.
Pollutant
A substance present in greater than natural concentration as a result of human n activity that has a net detrimental effect upon its environment or upon something of value in that environment.
Contaminant
Cause deviations from the normal composition of an environment. Are not classified as pollutants unless they have some detrimental effect.

Environmental Chemistry
The objective of the Environmental Chemistry Area of Specialization (AOS) is to train scientists to apply basic chemical principles to the study of the environmental behaviors of natural and anthropogenic chemicals. Environmental chemistry includes interdisciplinary studies which integrate across subjects such as geochemistry, analytical chemistry, transport processes, and toxicology to determine the cycling and impact of chemicals in the natural environment. Excellent research facilities equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation are available at several of our campuses, including dedicated environmental chemistry laboratories at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory (CBL) in Solomons, Maryland.
As both the Masters and Ph.D. are research-oriented programs, emphasis is placed on learning and applying the scientific method, employing strong quantitative approaches, and developing effective scientific writing skills. Students graduating from MEES through this AOS will find professional positions in Federal, state, and local government agencies (such as EPA, FDA, NIH), private chemical and manufacturing industries, academic institutions, and consulting firms.
Prerequisites:
A Bachelor's degree in the natural sciences or engineering, including:
