Electrochemistry has many applications beyond the university laboratory and provided the start of many corporations. These twelve achievers all investigated the connection between chemistry and electricity. The field began as a theoretical exploration of fundamental forces at work in the universe; it is now a cornerstone of industry, technology, and medicine.

http://www.public.coe.edu/departments/ElectrochemEd/
Electrochemical Education The purpose of this Web site is to collect in one location resources useful to educators attempting to incorporate modern electrochemical techniques into the undergraduate chemistry curriculum. The availability of low-cost, high performance potentiostats has put the capability of using sophisticated electrochemical techniques within the the reach of many undergraduate chemistry programs. However, unlike spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques, voltammetric techniques have not been widely adopted in most chemistry curricula. The National Academy of Science's publication, New Horizons in Electrochemical Science and Technology , states that "topics such as electrolytes and galvanic cells have been relegated to cursory treatment in freshman chemistry", "there has been a gradual disappearance of electrochemical coverage in most physical chemistry courses", and thus "most undergraduate students are ill prepared in ...electrochemistry". The goal of this Web site is to facilitate use of modern electrochemical techniques in undergraduate curricula by collecting experiments and information which may be useful to faculty attempting to use these tools with students. In particular, it is hoped that non-electrochemists will find materials here which will enable them to add voltammetric techniques to student laboratories. Why electrochemistry?

Energy Transfer Overview Electrochemistry enables students to explore the relationship between electrical and chemical energy as modeled within an electrolytic device or a voltaic cell. Students control initial conditions such as the types of ions and solutions, ion concentrations, the electrode materials, initial voltage, and temperature. They track their results by observing current and voltage readings, ion concentrations, conductivity, the change in the mass of electrodes, the amount of gases produced, and the duration of the chemical process itself. Students can use this simulation to explore: the dynamics of oxidation-reduction reactions the processes of electrolysis and electroplating

Electric conduction occurs through the motion of charged particles. The charged particles may be electrons (as in metals or semiconductors) or ions, which are electrically charged atoms, molecules, or molecular aggregates. Ionic conduction in electrolytes (liquid solutions, molten salts, and certain ionically conductive solids) is a phase of electrochemistry. Conduction in metals, semiconductors, and gases is generally considered a portion of physics. Other aspects of electrochemistry are described below. Chapter 14 - Harris, 4th Ed. Fundamentals of Electrochemistry
I. Definitions: redox reaction involves the transfer of electrons from one species to another LEO the lion goes GER loss of electrons = oxidation gain of electrons = reduction oxidizing agent takes electrons (i.e. is reduced) reducing agent gives electrons (i.e. is oxidized) II. Balancing Redox Reactions: Cover fairly briefly, but will go over the basic steps and do a couple of examples: Worksheet for your own review of this:
  • Step 1. Write the unbalanced redox reaction.
  • Step 2. Separate the reaction into its two half reactions (don't worry about electrons yet).
  • Step 3. Balance the atoms other than O and H in each half reaction
  • Step 4. Add H2O to balance oxygens then add H+ to balance hydrogens
  • Step 5. Add electrons to one side of each half-reaction in order to make the net charge on both sides of the equation equal
  • Step 6. Multiply one or both half-reactions to equalize number of e-
  • Step 7. Add the two half reactions together and cancel e-, other species
  • Step 8.

Programs of Study Industrial Internship Program Courses ... Chemistry Students Association What in the World Isn't Chemistry? Chemistry is often called the "Central Science" as it impacts on virtually all scientific disciplines and is an essential part of many new technological developments. The science of chemistry is concerned with understanding the detailed behavior of matter at the atomic and molecular level. What happens when two substances come together in a reaction vessel or in the human body? What is the arrangement of atoms in a molecule and what is the shape of the molecule? Basic knowledge of this type is extremely valuable. It helps to satisfy our curiosity about ourselves and our environment and makes the world a better place in which to live, for example, by furthering medical research. In the manufacturing sector, products ranging from pharmaceuticals to polymers and electronic materials all depend on developments in chemistry. Chemists have been at the forefront in developing techniques to sequence DNA which are essential for the human genome project. Ultra-trace chemical analysis supports the production and insures the reliability of micro-electronic components that find use in every facet of modern life. In a project at the edge of technological capability such as the space shuttle, classic inorganic chemistry reactions (i.e., solid rocket fuel) launch the shuttle into orbit while state-of-the-art materials developed by chemists help glide it safely back to earth
