    Volta: A pioneer in Electrochemistry
Courtesy of Willie Weinberg Purpose This report focuses on the life of Volta, details his inventions, and illuminates Volta's influence in electrochemistry. Electrochemistry Electrochemistry is that branch of science which deals with the inter-conversion of chemical and electrical energies, i.e., with chemical changes produced by electricity as in the production of electricity by chemical action as in electric cells or batteries.2 Originating at the turn of the eighteenth century, the field of electrochemistry really did not open up until the start of the 1800's when an Italian physicist, Alessandro Volta, made significant advances. The Life of Volta Count Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born in Como, Lombardy, on February 18, 1745. Volta was born to nobility that had moved down in social station. Unlike his siblings, young Alessandro did not enter the church. His young childhood did not show the makings of a prodigy. It was not until the age of four that he talked, and his family was convinced that he was retarded. However, at the age of seven when his father died, he was at the level of other children and then began to march ahead. By the age of fourteen, he made up his mind to be a physicist.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Electrochemistry is the science of the reactions that can take place at the interface of an electronic conductor (the electrode , which can be a metal or a semiconductor including graphite ) and an ionic conductor (the electrolyte If a chemical reaction is caused by an external voltage , or if a voltage is caused by a chemical reaction, as in a Battery (electricity) , it is an electrochemical reaction. In general, electrochemistry deals with situations where an oxidation and a reduction reaction is separated in space. The direct charge transfer from one molecule to another is not the topic of electrochemistry.

    Oxidation and Reduction
The elements involved in an electrochemical reaction are characterized by the number of electrons each has. The oxidation state of an ion is the number of electrons it has accepted or donated compared to its neutral state (which is defined as having an oxidation state of 0). If an atom or ion donates an electron in a reaction its oxidation state is increased, if an element accepts an electron its oxidation state is decreased. For example when sodium reacts with chlorine, sodium donates one electron and gains an oxidation state of +1. Chlorine accepts the electron and gains an oxidation state of −1. The sign of the oxidation state (positive/negative) actually corresponds to the value of each ion's electronic charge. The attraction of the differently charged sodium and chlorine ions is the reason they then form an

    Introduction
Electrochemistry encompasses chemical and physical processes that involve the transfer of charge. Some examples are electroplating, iron oxidation (rusting), solar-energy conversion, energy storage (batteries), photosynthesis, and respiration. Links to background documents on redox chemistry are listed below.
    Electroanalytical chemistry
There are two categories of electrochemical processes that are applied to quantitative measurements:
  • potentiometry - measurement of a potential (voltage) electrolytic methods - measurement involving a current
  • In both of these categories, an electrochemical measurement can be related to the concentration of an analyte. See the Electrochemistry Index for links to specific electrochemical techniques.

    The Plastic Hydrogen Bomb
It sounds like the perfect terrorist weapon , but it is a toy that teaches the principles of electrochemistry. It's also a high-tech squirt gun. The Plastic Hydrogen Bomb uses electricity to break apart water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. Then it uses a spark of electricity to explosively recombine the gases into high pressure steam, which propels a stream of water high into the air. The construction is a little more difficult than the other toys in this book, but the skills learned by building this toy can be put to good use building many other devices and works of art.
    Scrounging for bomb making materials.
The bomb is made from these materials:
  • Polyester resin and catalyst. This can be found at hobby stores and hardware stores.
  • Two carbon rods from cheap batteries (or large gold plated connectors)
  • A Piezo-electric ignitor from a Scripto electronic lighter
  • A 9 volt battery clip
  • Paraffin (from a cheap white candle)
  • Insulated copper wire (about 20 to 22 guage)
  • Solder

    60. SCH4U Electrochemistry: Introduction
electrochemistry involves oxidationreduction reactions that can be brought about by electricity The study of these changes is called electrochemistry.
    http://www.ucdsb.on.ca/tiss/stretton/CHEM2/electro1.htm
Electrochemistry Electrochemistry involves oxidation-reduction reactions that can be brought about by electricity or used to produce electricity
Oxidation and reduction, which will be considered here as the loss and gain of electrons, occur in many chemical systems. The rusting of iron, the photosynthesis that takes place in the leaves of green plants, and the conversion of foods to energy in the body are all examples of chemical changes that involve the transfer of electrons from one chemical species to another. When such reactions can be made to cause electrons to flow through a wire or when a flow of electrons makes a redox reaction happen, the processes are referred to as electrochemical changes . The study of these changes is called electrochemistry
The applications of electrochemistry are widespread. Batteries, which produce electrical energy by means of chemical reactions are in almost anything portable and electronic. In the laboratory, electrical measurements enable us to monitor chemical reactions of all sorts, even those in systems as tiny as a living cell. In industry, many important chemical - including liquid bleach (sodium hypochlorite) and lye (sodium hydroxide) are manufactured by electrochemical means. If it weren't for electrochemistry the important structural metals of aluminum and magnesium would only be laboratory curiosities and most people would see them only in museums.
Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Oxidation-reduction reactions or redox reactions involve the transfer of electron density from one atom to another. Two example are the reaction of sodium with chlorine and the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen.
