Note: this application assumes the reader has familiarity with Six Sigma concepts and metrics. If you are not familiar with Six Sigma, click here . Furthermore, EZ Rules software was used to create the Sigma metrics graphs and OPSpecs charts. You may want to consult the archives to find out more about the graphs used in the examples.
    Summary of Analyte Performance
    • Data was gathered on the performance of controls of a chemistry analyzer.
    • CLIA PT criteria were used to define the quality requirements for the analytes.
    • %Bias was estimated by calculating the absolute % difference of the Laboratory mean from the Peer Group mean during a proficiency testing survey. The average SDI was converted into concentration units by multiplying by the group SD, then this number was divided by group mean (also in concentration units), and the final results is a bias expressed as a percentage.

Thesis Project : Investigation on the relationship between the relaxation behavior of clusters or molecules and the underlying potential energy surface. Subjects include:
    • Development of the molecular dynamics programs for the study of temperature and PES dependency of atomic clusters. Constant energy molecular dynamics with and without explicit rotation are used to study the kinetic temperature and configuration temperature behavior and it is found that explicit rotation can dramatically change the difference between kinetic and configuration temperatures.
Implementing geometry optimization algorithms for sampling the Potential Energy Surface. BFGS/Conjugate-Gradient minimization and Eigenvector-Following algorithms are incorporated with the molecular dynamics program developed above, and this combination is proved to be an efficient method sampling the minima and saddle points on the Potential Energy Surface.

We have two positions we wish to advertise on your mailing list. I have also attached the adverts as a word file. Many thanks. University of Cambridge: Postdoctoral positions in Earth Sciences and Chemistry Two postdoctoral positions (Research Assistant or Research Associate) are available from 1st October 2004 (or as soon as possible thereafter) on new projects funded by NERC and the Leverhulme Trust concerned broadly with the impacts of volcanism on the Earths atmosphere. These are strongly interdisciplinary projects that bridge volcanology and atmospheric science with the overall aim to improve understanding of the contribution of volcanic gases to the composition and chemistry of the atmosphere at all scales. Closing date for applications is Tuesday 21 September 2004. Links: Centre for Atmospheric Sciences: http://www.atm.ch.cam.ac.uk/

S teph van Willigenburg is looking for a job back home. But she is doing a maths postdoc in Toronto and home is an ocean away in the UK. The distance can make even simple tasks like finding job ads in the daily newspaper into an almost impossibly hard chore. At least it could in the days before the Web. Now, all the job information she needs is just a click or two away. "Certainly all the jobs I've applied for this year have been from Internet lists or the Web," she says. "The Web has been invaluable for reading ads in the UK's Times Higher Education Supplement and useful for checking out people's research interests so you can tailor your application to a particular department." Van Willigenburg isn't alone. Increasingly, young scientists are relying on the Internet to keep them off the dole. But new job sites are appearing almost daily, and they all claim to be the solution to your job-hunting woes. Where is a poor scientist to start? Bob Noble recommends beginning with a general site. "The best use I've found of the net is the online newspapers, The Guardian The Telegraph New Scientist ," says Noble, a virtual reality researcher at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Phil Mackie disagrees. "The Web sites of the learned societies and the science journals are the best place to start because the mainstream sites don't really focus on subdivisions within science," says Mackie, who did plenty of Web searching to get his current postdoc position at Trinity College Dublin.
