2.2.1.1 PhD Programme in Medicinal Chemistry Aim
Medicinal Chemistry is an interdisciplinary research area incorporating synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology and pharmaceutical chemistry. The aim of this programme is to provide graduate students with an integrated broad-based training in the various disciplines related to medicinal chemistry including the most advance research methodology in organic synthesis and the biomedical sciences. Programme Rationale
The rationale for this programme is based on the following considerations: (i) Life Sciences Initiative in Singapore
Under the Singapore Industry 21 blueprint, the nation intends to create world-class capabilities across the whole value-added chain of life sciences activities and to develop life sciences as the fourth pillar of the manufacturing sector alongside electronics, chemicals and engineering.

A new potentially life-saving drug developed by a Bar-Ilan professor has received a green light for further development from the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Tests show that Prof. Abraham Nudelman's prodrug AN-9 demonstrates significant effectiveness in the war on cancer.
It's not surprising that Prof. Abraham Nudelman's pharmaceutical lab has drawn the attention of major chemical and drug companies throughout the world. Through joint-research with Beilinson Medical Center's Dr. Ada Raphaeli, the Bar-Ilan University chemist has developed a drug-delivery system (or prodrug) whereby the cancer-fighting substance Butyric Acid can be delivered to the site of disease before breaking down.
Nudelman's prodrug (called AN-9) has been tested using the strict procedures of the American National Cancer Institute, and was found to display promising anti-cancer properties in lung, pancreatic, colon cancers and melanoma.

BSc (HONS) MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY UCAS Code: F120 C BSc/ChemMC Introduction
BSc (Hons.) Medicinal Chemistry will appeal to students with an interest in chemistry in relation to the medical and health sciences, such as pharmaceutical chemistry, clinical chemistry, and medical laboratory science. Students complete a number of core chemistry and biomedical modules and then specialise in modules relating to medicinal aspects of chemistry. Modules available include Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Modern Synthetic Methods, Molecular Cell Biology, Pharmacology . Some of the specialist medicinal modules are delivered at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. Aims of the course
The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of medicinal and chemical sciences by detailed studies of modules selected from the fields of biology, biomedical sciences and chemistry. The emphasis is firstly on synthesis, structure and analysis of organic molecules and biomolecules and secondly on thweir participation in the metabolism of and interaction with living organisms. Methods of teaching and learning
Teaching methods comprise lectures, tutorials, case studies and laboratory classes. The material considered by these methods is then explored in greater detail through personal study and coursework.

Quarterly Courses Online Courses Intensive Programs ... About Bioscience Medicinal Chemistry Certificate Next Session: January 20 - June 2, 2005 Home Objectives and Benefits Past Participants ... Contact Us This intensive 18-week Medicinal Chemistry program focuses on the chemistry of drug molecules and drug action. It covers topics essential for understanding drug discovery, design and mechanism of action. Conceptualized in 1998 by John Saunders, Vice President of Chemistry at Neurocrine Biosciences, this course has been developed with input from key professionals in the pharmaceutical industry. With the growing drug discovery industry in San Diego, there is an increased need for "cross-training" of scientists to facilitate effective teamwork and development. It is our mission to help "build a bridge" of communication between biologists and chemists. In an issue of “Focus on Careers” in Science Magazine, it was observed that “Researchers in drug discovery must have flexibility and a breadth of scientific interests. In particular they must be prepared for frequent changes in the nature of the work they perform. Scientists must also communicate effectively in order to explain their contributions to individuals trained in different disciplines.” We hope to arm students with valuable knowledge and experience they can apply in their workplace to succeed in this challenging environment, and ultimately assist companies in achieving long term success.

BACKGROUND Variations of problem-based and case-based learning have been described as mechanisms for enhancing active student learning(2-4). The two approaches share the common attributes that: (i) teaching and learning center around the use of cases or scenarios in which one or more problems can be identified, analyzed, and solved, and (ii) evaluation of students is centered around student's ability to approach and solve novel problems. Generally speaking, traditional objective testing methods (e.g., multiple choice, true/false, or short answer examinations) are insufficient to evaluate the learner's ability to respond to a novel situation (i.e., case). More subjective and openended methods, either written or oral examinations, are required.
