Chemistry Laboratory Safety
If there is an emergency, call 911 from any phone in the Science building.
Safety in the laboratory is very important. You must follow the following rules and behave in a appropriate manner at all times. Your laboratory course time is your scheduled time to do your work. Specific written permission is required from your lab instructor for any exceptions. No guests are allowed in the chemistry labs. Only students who are registered for the lab course and time are permitted to be in the lab. Before you begin any experiment, you must read the procedure to determine the potential hazards. Be sure you know where to put the waste. All glass must be disposed in the glass waste container Appropriate attire is required for lab safety.
  • Eye protection must be worn over the eyes at all times that the lab drawers are open. Your goggles must be OSHA approved . Many glasses that are available at hardware stores are not OSHA approved. If you do not have OSHA approved goggles, you will not be allowed to work in lab. ( OSHA: Occupational Safety and Health Administration.)

Responsibilities of the Laboratory Employee:
Training Chemical Hygiene Plan . Laboratory employees must familiarize themselves with the Chemical Hygiene Plan. The Chemical Hygiene Plan is available on the Chemistry Safety Web Page and the Web Page Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Prior to using any chemicals with which they do not know the health risks, chemical reactivity, safe handling practices, or proper disposal procedures, the laboratory employee will look up the appropriate Material Safety Data Sheet. The MSDS's are available off the web from links on the Chemistry Safety Web Page and the Procedures.

1. Scope 1.1 Weizmann Institute of Science Statement of Responsibility It is the responsibility of the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS), as an employer, to take every reasonable precaution to provide a work environment that is free from recognizable hazards for its employees, to ensure that the necessary work practices, procedures and policies are implemented to protect all employees working in WIS owned and operated laboratories from hazardous chemicals in the work area, in accordance with the State of Israel Labour Law. WIS employees have the responsibility to be well-informed regarding hazardous chemicals and risks associated with using hazardous chemicals in the laboratory environment. This document is intended for WIS compliance with the State of Israel Labour Law and will serve as a broad-based Chemical Safety Plan for all WIS owned and operated laboratories. 1.2 Scope and Application This document serves as the written guide for WIS compliance to the Laboratory Standard and the Chemical Safety Plan (CSP) requirements contained therein. All units at WIS engaged in the laboratory use (as defined by this document) of hazardous chemicals are required to comply with this document. The primary objective of this document is to provide a general guide for handling hazardous chemicals in laboratories. The Chemical Safety Plan establishes the basic safety principles for laboratory procedures, equipment and work practices that are capable of protecting employees from physical and health hazards of hazardous chemicals in laboratories.

In the event of an accident requiring immediate attention (e.g., bodily injury, fire, major chemical spill):
  • Dial the Boston University Police (353-2121). Report clearly the nature and location of the accident.
  • The police are qualified to deal with emergencies, but you must be available to give them as much information as you can about the nature of the accident. We must file an accident report on every incident that occurs in our teaching and research laboratories. You must report all accidents, whether serious or minor, to your (teaching) laboratory supervisor, to the Chemistry Office or to the Chemistry Safety Officer, Richard Laursen laursen@bu.edu

1. GOGGLES WILL BE WORN AT ALL TIMES. No Exceptions. You will be allowed two verbal warnings. Any reminders after this will result in a grade penalty. 2. Full shoes are required. No sandals, flip-flops, etc. are allowed. Lab coat or apron is required when wearing shorts, tank tops, etc. 3. Attendance is required at all laboratory sessions. In the event of an absence, contact your laboratory instructor and arrange to make up the work during another scheduled lab session. 4. The student should be acquainted with the eyewash station, safety shower, and fire- fighting equipment. Students are responsible for knowing their location and operation. 5. No smoking, chewing, eating or drinking allowed in the laboratory. If the student is taking medication which will affect alertness, notify the lab instructor. 6. Remember that most organic chemicals are flammable, toxic, carcinogenic or all three. Treat them accordingly. 7. Use burners only when expressly directed to do so. Do not leave flames unattended. Turn burners off when not is use. 8. Report all accidents or injury to the instructor immediately. In the event of a chemical spill, affected areas of the body should be immediately flushed with water.

SAFETY INFORMATION SUPPLEMENT
2005 REVISION INTRODUCTION TO OUR SAFETY PROGRAM As a member of the Chemistry Department, you are covered by the Department Chemical Hygiene Plan (webposted and in the Chemistry Library). You should become familiar with the aspects of the plan that apply to your situation. You will also receive a copy of Safety in Academic Chemistry Laboratories , published by the American Chemical Society. Read this manual and retain it as a reference. It clearly summarizes much useful commonsense information. However, there are of course facts you will need to know that are specifically pertinent to operations at Stony Brook. Such material is presented here. At the beginning of your relationship with our Department, you will be required to pass a safety quiz based on the ACS manual and this supplement. You will also be given a voucher to sign, indicating your agreement to abide by the provisions of the Chemical Hygiene Plan and to observe accepted standards of laboratory safety.
