Quick Link to the e-Beaker! Chemists study nature at the molecular level, and the broad field of chemistry is often called the "central science," positioned between the atomic world of physics and the complex living systems of biology. Chemistry is primarily an experimental science requiring well- developed laboratory and problem-solving skills. But theoretical chemistry is also an important field in its own right with strong components of modern mathematics and computer technology. The chemistry curriculum at Carleton deals extensively with fundamental ideas and with experimental chemistry. Undergraduate research is an active part of the program. Please take a few moments to learn about our department ( note : items which are not links will be added soon.): Last modified: 19-Aug-2005 12:20

Why did the electron cross the potential energy barrier ? A. To place itself in a position parallel, yet perpendicular to its original starting location. Q: How many physical chemists does it take to change a light bulb? A: Only one, but he/she will change it three times, plot a straight line through the data, and then extrapolate to zero concentration. A physicist, biologist and a chemist were going to the ocean for the first time. The physicist saw the ocean and was fascinated by the waves. He said he wanted to do some research on the fluid dynamics of the waves and walked into the ocean. Obviously he drowned and never returned. The biologist said she wanted to do research on the flora and fauna inside the ocean and walked inside the ocean. She too, never returned.

This from Orin: Subject: Chemistry Exam The following is a response to an actual question given on a University
of Washington Chemistry mid term. The
professor shared this answer with colleagues, which is why we can now
enjoy it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic
(absorbs heat)? First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we
need to know the rate that souls are moving
into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely
assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will
not be able to leave so none are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different
religions that exist in the world today.
Several of these religions believe that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one of them at a time, we

I'm not fure if I'm serious about that or not... huge auditorium with about 400 or 500 students, so I was writing for a big audience. Also #2 is about Dr. Morrison, so if you didn't have him, you wouldn't get it. Actually, that one might have been the funniest. The thing is, nobody ever knew I wrote it. He kind of mentioned almost under his breath or as a side note that "a student brought this to me" as he was putting it on the overhead projector, but lots of people were talking and I think he was interrupted by something else, so most people probably didn't hear that and thought he wrote it. But I did, and my modesty prevented me from telling anyone. It consists mostly of esoteric jokes, so if you haven't had organic chemistry or it's been a long time since you had it, this won't seem as funny as it was back then. But believe me, it was a huge success. It's really sad that that was like my proudest moment of college...

Chemistry Humor
Author Unknown The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry midterm: "Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Support your answer with a proof." Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing over time. So, we need to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls
are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Some of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can
project that all people and all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially.
