Welcome to the Department of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. The Department has a reputation within industry and academia for producing highly trained, competent and professional chemical engineers. We offer students the choice of a range of accredited MEng and BEng courses, and also a BSc programme run in conjunction with the Business School. Three postgraduate MSc courses are also offered. The excellence of our teaching was recognised in the latest UK-wide Teaching Quality Assessment by the award of 22 points out of a maximum possible score of 24. The Department has strong links with industry in the UK and overseas. Most of our undergraduate students add value to their studies though our structured industrial placement scheme, gaining vital professional experience and enhancing their employment prospects. Research in the Department is organised into three multidisciplinary areas: Advanced Separation Technologies, Product Engineering, and Safety Environment and Loss Prevention. In each of these we work closely with industry and with researchers in universities worldwide. If you have any questions or require additional information, please feel free to contact the Department directly; we will be happy to help you.

Secretary: Linda Dorsey Fundamental and applied aspects of biomedical engineering and cell biology. B.S. (with Environmental Engineering minor) 1978, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Ph.D. 1983, Cornell University. Awards and Honors Carnegie Mellon, 1983-. P rofessor Domach’s research concentrates on cellular processes, cell physiology/energetics, enzymology, and novel biomedical devices. Parallel Experimentation Systems for Drug Discovery and Cell Development A collaboration with a nearby medical research group aims to develop an automated system for performing 100 or more cell growth experiments in parallel. A unique facet is when cells present certain cues that are detected via optics or fluorescent probes, the abiotic environment can be altered by robotic devices so that cellular control mechanisms can be directed or tested in detail. One current application entails expanding stem cell populations for engraftment into patients. Another project involved building arrays of surface sensors to track the location and proliferation of 100's of cells. Cellular Processes The goal is to understand the behavior of cells in bioreactors and, thus, reactor performance in terms of biochemical reaction and control mechanisms. Current work entails developing in situ NMR and fluorescent spectroscopic methods for observing intracellular reaction processes. Coupling the experimental investigations to mathematical model development also is a key component of this work.

Ultimately, the role of chemical engineers is to apply chemistry, Throughout theworld, UMass chemical engineering is particularly known for four areas
http://www.ecs.umass.edu/che/
U ltimately, the role of chemical engineers is to apply chemistry, especially biological, organic, and inorganic chemistry. Applying chemistry provides the gasoline, safe drugs, shampoo, textiles, plastics, computer chips, paints, and so many things that make up our everyday lives. To make all these things, chemical engineers combine chemistry, mathematics, physics, biology, economics, management, and computer science. These elements are used together to analyze and design systems, including chemical processes and products. At UMass Amherst, undergraduate and graduate students learn how to apply sciences to manufacture this "stuff of life" while building the analytical and innovation skills needed to create new solutions. Lectures, computer use, problem-solving in and out of class, laboratory experiences, and intense discussion are all parts of this challenging major. Going beyond the traditional educational environment, our students hone their skills in a model computer classroom and in research supervised by the faculty. Throughout the world, UMass Chemical Engineering is particularly known for

A Chemical Engineering Timeline
(Please forgive my digression into other topics) TIMELINE KEY Topics Relating to Chemical Engineering. A Digression into Miscellaneous Topics (often Chemistry) "Enough already... go to the end ~440 BC: Democritus proposes the concept an of atom to describe the indivisible and indestructible particles that were thought to compose the substance of all things. ~250 BC: Archimedes deduces the law of the levers and could evaluate the relative density of bodies by observing their buoyancy force when immersed in water. ~240 BC: Eratosthenes of Cyrene , director of Alexandria library, calculates the size of Earth by measuring the sun's shadow at noon in Siena (Egypt) and Alexandria. Pliny the Elder writes his Historia Naturalis, a 39 volume universal encyclopedia , compiling all that was known about the science of his day. Pliny died in Pompeii during the eruption of the volcano the year 79. Claudius Ptolemaeus (Ptolemy) writes a mathematical and geographical treatise describing all ancient knowledge concerning distances and locations on the earth. He also developed a star catalogue with 1022 entries. The Ptolomeic model placed the earth as the center of the universe; the sun, stars and planets revolved around the earth in circular orbits. This model remained the standard interpretation for more than a millennium, until the time of Copernicus.
