About the Department
Research Activities PhD Studentships Undergraduate Admissions ... Job Vacancies
We aim to provide a stimulating and diverse research and training environment of international standing within which important and exciting areas of modern biology, biotechnology and medicine can be investigated at the atomic, molecular, cellular and organism level. The department pursues these research aims through its high level of external research funding, its investment in excellent new facilities, up-to-date equipment and state-of-the-art technologies, the recruitment of high-calibre staff, maintenance of industrial contacts, and the fostering of close links and collaborations within the extensive UCL and Bloomsbury scientific community. The disciplines of biochemistry and molecular biology have never been more relevant to the furtherance of our fundamental knowledge and ability to exploit biological systems than in this, the 'post-genomic' era. From the structural biology of proteins and enzymes to the mechanism of amphibian limb regeneration; from the regulation of transcription of genes involved in drug metabolism to the uncovering of gene function in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, from understanding the signalling of insulin receptors to the computer analysis of whole genomes sequences, this department provides an exciting venue in which to realise the promise of these important goals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biochemistry
Biochemistry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Biochemistry is the chemistry of life , a bridge between biology and chemistry that studies how complex chemical reactions give rise to life. It is a hybrid branch of chemistry which specialises in the chemical processes in living organisms . This article only discusses terrestrial biochemistry ( carbon - and water -based), as all the life forms we know are on Earth . Since all life forms alive today are descended from the same common ancestor , they naturally have similar biochemistries, even for matters which would appear to be essentially arbitrary, such as the genetic code or handedness of various biomolecules. It is unknown whether alternate biochemistries are possible or practical. Biochemistry is the study of the structure and function of cellular components , such as proteins carbohydrates lipids nucleic acids , and other biomolecules . Although there is a vast number of different biomolecules, they tend to be composed of the same repeating subunits (called monomers ), in different orders. Each class of biomolecules has a different set of subunits. Recently, biochemistry has focused more specifically on the chemistry of enzyme catalyzed reactions, and on the properties of proteins.

Welcome
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Austin offers unsurpassed opportunities for world-class research across a broad range of chemical and biochemical fields. With nearly fifty faculty, we have a reputation for excellence in teaching in addition to research. Recent rankings position us as one of the top chemistry departments in the country for both our graduate programs and our funding for research and development. We are very pleased to announce the addition of James R. Chelikowsky to our faculty. Professor Chelikowsky, the ICES Chair of Computational Materials, is joining us as Professor of Chemistry, Physics, and Chemical Engineering in the spring of 2005.

    Course Description
Biochemistry (CHM 341) is a traditional upper-division course for science majors (chemistry and biology). Finding an appropriate text for a one-semester course that must be both deep and broad is a challenge. Of the many excellent, colorful, and massive texts available, I use Lehninger, Nelson, and Cox. The information content is less encyclopedic than others, but I like the pedagogical style. Though I've taught this course seven times, the lab curriculum continues to evolve. By now I think I'm getting pretty close to a satisfactory set of exercises. I've separated my discussion into two groups: those exercises I like and will continue to use and those that I have tried but, for various reasons, have not kept. Below are my descriptions of each exercise with comments about their good and bad points. I would appreciate your comments and welcome your questions. (Parenthetically, a big hurdle to setting up biochemistry exercises is the cost of instrumentation, in my case, as exemplified by spectrophotometers and pH meters. For those of you with more time and manual dexterity than cash, may I suggest a laboratory instructional system known as LIMSport . This system, designed by

    http://www.sciencemag.org/feature/plus/sfg/education/glossaries.shtml
The rapid changes afoot in genomics, bioinformatics, and gene medicine are forcing scientists, policymakers, and the public alike to grapple with some unfamiliar terminology. The Web, fortunately, offers a rich supply of online glossaries and dictionaries to help make sense of it all. A bit too rich, in fact; to narrow down the choices, we've gathered on this page some of the better online glossaries out there. We've awarded a rosette ( ) to the top sites in selected categories, and a star ( ) to denote additional standout resources. In conferring these rankings, we've tended to favor comprehensive sites that make good use of the Web, through functionality such as internal hyperlinking of related terms. (Those not so honored are still excellent, however, and are well worth a visit.) What gives this resource extra interest, though, are accompanying streaming-audio elaborations, each a minute or so in length, by various scientists (here's an example, for the term
