Welcome
Chemistry and biochemistry graduates have been very successful when applying to medical and graduate schools. Others have developed careers in industry, research organizations and the military. The program stresses not only the fundamentals of chemistry and biochemistry, but the development of the intellectual skills necessary to apply them. To help meet these the goals, much of our laboratory program is based on the guided inquiry and discovery modes, while in the classroom, interactive learning is emphasized. Garni Hall 304

Laboratory Exercises
Department of Biochemistry
University of Nebraska The exercises developed for Biochemistry 321 were funded by a grant (No. DUE 9550791) from the National Science Foundation Please feel free to take one or all of the exercises and try them in your class. We assume that instructors will be familiar with laboratory safety; the developers of these exercises cannot assume liability arising from these exercises. If you find any errors, please contact me (markwell@unl.edu) and I will see that corrections are made. If you want to make any suggestions for changes, please do so; I will be more than happy to identify individuals who improve our collection. If you have any questions about the exercises, contact one of us: These exercises are designed to be implemented in our teaching labs in the Beadle Center. They are designed for use by 24 students, four on each side of a lab bench. The exercises are written to be carried out by pairs of students; some exercises are intended to involve cooperation by both pair of students on one side of a lab bench. Some of the exercises are meant to involve collaborative learning and a greater extent of student freedom than usual in teaching laboratories. The schedule starts the first week with a quick exercise on the determination of chlorophylls a and b with a spectrophotometer. The last three periods of our fifteen week semester are devoted to independent student projects.

Currently, most of our 8300+ terms deal with biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, cell biology and genetics. We also have some terms relating to ecology, limnology, pharmacology, toxicology and medicine. Don't expect to find common or exotic animals here; there are far too many species to cover even a fraction in a resource like this. However, we've included medically- and biotechnologically-relevant organisms such as bacteria, worms, fungi, and some plants. We are adding new terms as quickly as our funding permits.
