Our students have a wide variety of research interests and experiences, and participate in many academic and extracurricular activities. Overview
The biosphere-atmosphere interactions and atmospheric chemistry group at Lancaster is headed by Professor Nick Hewitt. The main focus of our research is the occurrence and behaviour of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of biogenic origin in the atmosphere. As well as isoprene (C5H8) and the monoterpene (C10), we are interested in other hydrocarbons and oxygenated VOCs. Our work involves fieldwork, lab work and modelling experiments. We are also interested in ozone in the troposphere and stratosphere, the formation of particles in the atmosphere, and modelling of the carbon cycle. Our home was filled with books, and all of us were avid readers. My reading at that time ran toward naval history, which was complemented with realistic scale-models and simulated naval battles using an elaborate mathematical system for rating each warship and the effects of combat on them. During my sophomore year in high school, my math teacher, who also coached tennis and basketball, encouraged me to take up tennis - which led me onto the varsity tennis team for my junior and senior years, and into a full decade of intense athletic competition. As a senior, I played on the varsity basketball team.
After graduation from high school in 1943, almost all of my male classmates immediately entered the military services. However, because I was still well under the compulsory draft age of 18, I enrolled at Ohio Wesleyan and attended the university year-round for the next two years. During these war years, only 30 or 40 civilian males were on campus, plus about 200 naval officer trainees and 1,000 women. With so few men available, I played on the University basketball and baseball teams, and wrote much of the sports page for the University newspaper.
My accelerated academic schedule made me eligible for my final year of university in June, 1945, as I approached my 18th birthday. However, with the fighting in the Pacific and the continuing military draft, I enlisted in a Navy program to train radar operators. The Pacific war ended while I was still in basic training near Chicago, and I served the next year in several midwestern Naval Separation Centers, as the 10,000,000 Americans who had preceded me into the military were returned to civilian life. A major amount of this Navy time was devoted to competitive athletics for the Navy base teams, and I emerged after 14 months as a non commissioned officer with a rating of Specialist (Athletics) 3rd class. My first real opportunity to see the rest of the United States came when I was transferred to San Pedro, California for discharge from the Navy.

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the chemistry of earth's atmosphere. We will address questions including: What is the composition of the atmosphere and how and why is it changing? How quickly are pollutants transported vertically, horizontally across urban air sheds, and across continents and hemispheres? How are pollutants chemically transformed during transport? Specific foci will include: Stratospheric ozone depletion, increasing greenhouse gases, changes in the chemistry of the troposphere, smog.

Water The Atmospheric Chemistry Theme has been approved by the Partners Background Few issues capture the attention of the world as dramatically as climate and the possibility of global change. However, the assessment of an already complex situation is made even complex by human-induced impacts on the Earth and its atmosphere. These impacts will almost certainly grow during the new century as population increases and as technologies and economies expand. Data will be essential not only to monitor the state of the Earth and its climate but also to develop the models needed to interpret observations and to predict its future evolution. Assessing the global impact of climate change will become more and more important and will depend upon knowledge of the nature and causes of the change. There are currently grave deficiencies in knowledge of the extent and rate that they are occurring. Correcting this situation by furthering scientific understanding depends on the coupling of a set of long-term ground- and space-based observations (spanning a wide range of temporal and spatial scales) with process studies and models set within the context of Earth system models. An integral part of the Earth system is the atmosphere where material and energy are cycled through the various compartments of the system. Its composition and evolutions reflect not only the natural bio/geochemical processes that occur on land and in the ocean, but also, increasingly, human-induced processes and activities. The assessment and prediction of these various impacts depends on the development of a full understanding and knowledge of the chemistry of the atmosphere. Atmospheric chemistry observations document the state of the atmosphere and thus help understand the processes that govern its composition and together they provide the basis for assessing the potential for future change.

Comments and suggestions Search this site The Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Branch (Code SGG) conducts scientific research on important environmental issues in stratospheric chemistry and ozone depletion, strastospheric-troposphere exchange, pertubations in the chemical composition of the troposphere, and climatic changes from clouds, aerosols, and greenhouse gases. The SGG effort includes: a) development and deployment of sensitive, state-of-art instruments on airborne platforms (including aircraft, balloons, and uninhabited aerial vehicules, UAV's), b) modeling of chemistry, dynamics, and radiative transfer processes to understand and elucidate controlling mechanisms, c) science team support of spacecraft measurements of earth atmospheric processes, and d) advocacy, planning and execution of selected field projects for the Office of Earth Science. Hurst of NOAA’s Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory, Halocarbons and other Atmospheric Trace Species Group (phew!) was kind enough to share with us some details about this fascinating field! What is your educational background? I earned a B.S. ('83), M.S. ('87) and Ph.D. ('90) in chemistry, all from the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Though my Ph.D. diploma officially labels me as a physical chemist, my thesis research was almost entirely in the field of atmospheric chemistry. Since graduation, I have worked in Australia as a post-doctoral fellow and am currently a research scientist at the University of Colorado, Boulder. When did you first become interested in atmospheric chemistry? During my last year as an undergraduate at UCI, a friend of mine convinced me to look into being a research assistant in a chemistry laboratory. He was working in the atmospheric chemistry research laboratory of Professor F. Sherwood Rowland, so I paid a visit to that laboratory to see what the scientists were doing. I was very impressed with the questions they were trying to answer about the atmosphere, especially those pertaining to stratospheric ozone depletion and forced climate change. Although I had no specific training in atmospheric chemistry, I took an immediate interest in the topic, mainly because it dealt with current environmental problems of great importance to everybody on the planet.
