Interactive Computer Models for Analytical Chemistry Instruction

http://www.wam.umd.edu/~toh/models/ A Links Go Key Resource Award in the Simulation Models topic
Last updated: March, 2003 This is a collection of interactive computer models and simulations of common analytical instruments and techniques. Most have a point-and-click interface; you click buttons and drag sliders to control variables and the model responds dynamically, usually faster than real time. I originally designed these models for students in my courses in Instrumental Analysis (an undergraduate laboratory course) and Spectrochemical Methods (a graduate lecture-based course). They were designed to be used by individual students either as homework assignments, for in-class use in a computer lab environment, or in the laboratory for the analysis of student-generated data. Some can be used by the instructor in lecture-demonstration environments. Student assignment handouts are attached to most of them. The mathematical basis for each model is described, including all cell definitions and equations.
  • PC users: Shift-click to download complete set of models as a ZIP file (700 Kbytes)
  • Mac users: Shift-click to download complete set of models as a SIT file (500 Kbtes) These model collections include a "player" application that will allow you to run the models and make changes to the parameters.

comprises such subjects as original research on all aspects of analytical work related to environmental problems such as analysis of organic, inorganic and radioactive pollutants in air and water; determination of harmful substances, including their metabolic breakdown products; and analytical methods for metabolic breakdown patterns or other chemical degradation patterns in the environment and in biological samples. The journal also covers the development of new analytical methods or improvement of existing ones useful for the control and investigation of pollutants or trace amounts of naturally occurring active chemicals in the environment, or methods that help to gain more insight into our environment. Development, modification and automation of instruments and techniques with potential in environment sciences are also part of the journal.

    Description
The articles in TrAC are concise overviews of new developments in analytical chemistry, and are aimed at helping analytical chemists and other users of analytical techniques explore and orient themselves in fields outside of their particular specialization(s). The reviews form an excellent introduction to topics of interest in numerous fields including: biochemistry, biotechnology, clinical chemistry, environmental monitoring, instrumentation, forensic science, laboratory automation, materials science, pharmaceutical chemistry and surface science.
Issues contain: news, meeting reports; a computer corner presenting useful tips for getting the most out of a lab computer; short, critical invited review articles aimed at an interdisciplinary readership; book and software reviews; and meeting announcements. The

    Abstract
    Introduction
This was a lofty chamber, lined and littered with countless bottles. Broad, low tables were scattered about, which bristled with retorts, test-tubes, and little Bunsen lamps, with their blue flickering flames. There was only one student in the room, who was bending over a distant table absorbed in his work. At the sound of our steps he glanced round and sprang to his feet with a cry of pleasure. "I’ve found it! I’ve found it," he shouted to my companion, running towards us with a test-tube in his hand. "I have found a re-agent which is precipitated by hemoglobin, and by nothing else." Had he discovered a gold mine, greater delight could not have shone upon his features "Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes," said Stamford, introducing us.

Recent Introduction to Spectroscopy Learn what spectroscopy and spectra are, how spectroscopy works, and what it is used for. This article includes a list of several different spectroscopies, with brief descriptions of their characteristics. Introduction to Qualitative Analysis Qualitative analysis is used to identify the chemical species in an unknown substance. Introductory qualitative chemical analysis exploits the unique characteristics of the elements to separate metal ions in an aqueous solution. This article identifies the main metal groups, discusses characteristics of major reagents, and lists selected cation complexes. Qualitative Analysis - Flame Tests The flame test is a quick low-tech method of identifying an element by the color of light it yields in a flame. Learn how to perform this test and to interpret the results.
